In the previous part, we looked at urban legends surrounding Lucia, the only one of the three Fatima children who lived to old age. This time, we turn to the conspiracy theories surrounding the Third Secret of Fatima itself.
According to accounts connected to Lucia, the third prophecy she received from the Virgin Mary was supposed to be revealed in 1960. Lucia is said to have entrusted the written prophecy to the Church when she became a nun. Yet when 1960 arrived, the Third Secret of Fatima was not made public.
A prophecy sealed again
Pope John XXIII, who led the Catholic Church in the early 1960s, is said to have read the prophecy and decided that its contents were too serious to release. That decision helped the rumors and urban legends around the Third Secret spread even further.
Because 1960 was believed to be the year指定ed by the Virgin Mary for disclosure, John XXIII’s reported decision not to publish it meant the matter passed to the next pope, Paul VI.
There is also an eerie anecdote that Paul VI read the prophecy and then fell into a coma for about a week. This is not a confirmed historical fact, but it became part of the mythology surrounding the secret.
Another rumor to consider is the theory, discussed in the previous article, that Lucia herself may have been replaced. Some modern researchers have claimed that around 1960—the very year Lucia said the prophecy should be revealed—the real Lucia was assassinated and another woman was presented as her. This remains a conspiracy theory, but it plays a major role in doubts about the later handling of the Third Secret.
The First Secret aside, the Second Secret of Fatima is often said to have predicted the outbreak of World War II. The references to Russia are also seen by believers as fitting the contents of the second prophecy. Russia’s suffering is often interpreted as the period from the Russian Revolution through the collapse of the Soviet Union, an era marked by state atheism. During World War II, Stalin’s dictatorship also brought about the deaths of many people.
After the war, some people who believed the Second Secret had referred to these events began to suspect that the Third Secret must contain something even worse than World War II—perhaps another war, nuclear catastrophe, or a warning about the Cold War era.
The 1981 hijacking and the demand to reveal the secret
In May 1981, an Irish airline flight was hijacked. One of the demands made during the incident was the disclosure of the Third Secret of Fatima. The perpetrator was reportedly a Catholic believer.
Then, in 2000, after 40 years of secrecy, the Vatican finally announced that it would formally reveal the prophecy.
What the Vatican released in 2000
The text released by the Holy See described a vision seen after the first two revelations. In it, the children saw an angel to the left of Mary, slightly above her, holding a flaming sword in his left hand. The flames went out when they touched the bright light coming from Mary’s right hand.
The angel pointed to the earth with his right hand and cried out loudly: “Penance, penance, penance.”
Then, within an immeasurable light understood as God, the children saw a bishop dressed in white. The vision gave them the feeling that this figure was the pope. Other bishops, priests, monks, and nuns were also climbing a steep mountain. At its summit stood a large, rough cross made of unfinished wood.
Before reaching the mountain, the pope passed through a large half-ruined city, trembling, grieving, and praying for the souls of the dead he encountered along the way.
When the pope reached the top and knelt at the foot of the cross, he was killed by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him. Other bishops, priests, monks, nuns, and laypeople of many ranks and professions also died there one after another.
Beneath the two arms of the cross stood two angels, each holding a crystal vessel. They gathered the blood of the martyrs and sprinkled it on the souls making their way toward God.
The text was dated January 3, 1944, in Tuy, and was published by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith as the official Third Secret of Fatima.
Pope John Paul II later interpreted this vision as referring to the assassination attempt against him in 1981. However, critics have pointed out several inconsistencies.
The prophecy says the pope kneeling beneath the great cross was “killed” by soldiers. In reality, the 1981 attack on John Paul II was an attempted assassination, not a successful one. The vision also describes other bishops, priests, and religious figures dying one after another, but no such event occurred in connection with the 1981 attack.
Leaving aside whether the post-1960 Lucia was truly the original Lucia, some critics have argued that the released text was only part of the prophecy. The controversy even developed into legal action against the Vatican. Many people have argued that the published contents do not seem severe enough to explain why two popes would have felt the need to keep them hidden. Lucia herself is also said to have indicated that the prophecy was connected to the Book of Revelation.
How the Third Secret reached Rome
The Third Secret of Fatima is said to have been written down by Lucia in the 1940s and handed directly to Bishop da Silva. In 1946, when Lucia was reportedly asked why the Church had to wait until 1960, she clearly answered that it was because the Virgin Mary wanted it that way.
More precisely, the instruction attached to the Third Secret was reportedly that it should be revealed either after Lucia’s death or in 1960.
In 1957, Bishop da Silva is said to have entrusted the precious manuscript to Auxiliary Bishop Venancio, asking him to transport it to Rome. The pope at the time was Pius XII, who reportedly chose not to read the contents before 1960.
That brings the story back to the re-sealing of the prophecy in 1960. Considering the change of popes, the questions surrounding Lucia, and the delay in disclosure, some researchers argue that the Third Secret may have been altered. Others claim that the original Third Secret was not as long as the text eventually published.
So what was true? What did the Third Secret of Fatima really mean?
Why would the truth remain hidden?
If the text was altered or partly concealed, why would the Third Secret of Fatima need to be treated that way?
One possibility suggested by conspiracy theorists is that it may have contained an inconvenient truth for the Vatican or the Catholic Church. Later in life—especially after 1960, the year when the prophecy was supposedly meant to be revealed—Lucia’s behavior and public statements appeared to change. She was seen making gestures that seemed to support the pope and the Vatican.
One often-discussed episode involves Lucia meeting the pope and kissing the hand he offered her. Some critics have argued that, from a Christian religious standpoint, this was an extremely unusual act.
If the later Lucia was not the original Lucia, then the people who needed the truth buried may have been inside the Vatican or the Catholic Church itself. Lucia died in 2005, and many believe it is now almost impossible to fully uncover the truth.
Even so, the Third Secret of Fatima still contains many strange and unresolved points. Whether one sees it as a sacred warning, a Cold War-era mystery, or one of the Vatican’s most persistent conspiracy legends, its atmosphere remains deeply unsettling.

さて、ここまではファティマの予言を授けられた子どものうち、唯一長命であったルシアに関する都市伝説などを紹介してきたが、 本記事ではファティマ第三の予言そのものに関する陰謀について触れていきたい と思う。少なくともルシアは予言を授けられた幼少期から１９５７年にかけて、聖母マリアから受けた第三の予言は１９６０年に公開するように厳命されていたという。。ルシアは授かった予言に関してはシスターになる際に、教会へ「預けた」のは事実であるとされているが、１９６０年になってもファティマ第三の予言は公開されることがなかった。
６０年代の教皇であったヨハネ２３世は一度この予言について中身を確認したとされているが、あまりの内容に再度封印することになった。これらの行為によって ファティマ第三の予言を取り巻く都市伝説や、噂は大きな広がりを見せる ことになる。１９８１年アイルランド航空便がハイジャックされる。。聖母が指定したとされている第三の予言公開の年になるはずだった１９６０年にはヨハネ２３世によって「公開すべきではない」との判断がくだされた結果、次の教皇となったパウロ６世が予言を引き継ぐことになった。
しかし、パウロ６世も予言の中身を見た結果、一週間ほど昏睡したという逸話が残されている。合わせて考えたいのは、以前の記事で紹介した ルシアそのものが入れ替わっている可能性 である。ルシアが聖母マリアから予言の公開を指示されていたという１９６０年は、近年の研究者の間で ルシア自身が暗殺され、別人をルシアとしているという説 がある。そもそも、第一の予言はともかく、ファティマ第二の予言とされている内容は、 「第二次世界大戦の勃発」 であったと言われている。
ロシアが関係していたという説は予言を受けた時期から考えても第二の予言の内容に忠実になっている。実際にロシアが受けたと言われている受難は、ロシア革命からソビエト崩壊までの無宗教時代であったとされており、実際に第二次世界大戦ではスターリンによる独裁政治によって多くの人間が犠牲になっている。戦後、これらの問題がファティマ第二の予言の内容であったと考えた人々は冷戦下において 次の戦争や核の問題など、第二次世界大戦を上回るような内容が第三の予言には隠れている と考えていた。
そんな中、１９８１年５月にアイルランド航空便がハイジャックされる事件が発生し、要求として「ファティマ第三の予言の開示」を求めている。この 事件の犯人はカトリック信者 であった。そして、いよいよ２０００年になり、４０年間の封印を解いて正式に予言を公表するという流れになった。教皇庁が公開したファティマ第三の予言の疑問点。すでに述べたあの二つの啓示のあと、わたしたちは、マリアの左側の少し高い所に、火の剣を左手に持った一人の天使を見ました。しかしその炎は、マリアが天使に向かって差し伸べておられた右手から発する輝かしい光に触れると消えるのでした。
天使は、右手で地を指しながら大声で叫びました。「悔い改め、悔い改め、悔い改め」。それからわたしたちには、計り知れない光―それは神です―の中に、「何か鏡の前を人が通り過ぎるときにその鏡に映って見えるような感じで」白い衣をまとった一人の司教が見えました。「それは教皇だという感じでした」。そのほかに幾人もの司教と司祭、修道士と修道女が、険しい山を登っていました。その頂上には、樹皮のついたコルクの木のような粗末な丸太の大十字架が立っていました。
教皇は、そこに到着なさる前に、半ば廃墟と化した大きな町を、苦痛と悲しみにあえぎながら震える足取りでお通りになり、通りすがりに出会う死者の魂の為に祈っておられました。それから教皇は山の頂上に到着し、大十字架のもとにひざまづいてひれ伏されたとき、一団の兵士達によって殺されました。彼らは教皇に向かって何発もの銃弾を発射し、矢を放ちました。同様に、他の司教、司祭、修道士、修道女、そして様々な階級と職種の平信徒の人々も次々にそこで死んでいきました。
十字架の二つの腕の下にいた二位の天使は、おのおの手にした水晶の水入れに殉教者たちの血を集め、神に向かって歩んでくる霊魂にそれを注ぐのでした。トゥイにて 一九四四年一月三日 — 教皇庁教理省『ファティマ 第三の秘密』カトリック中央協議会、2001年 。引用元： ファティマの聖母 。教皇庁は上記内容が２０００年に正式に開示された 「ファティマ第三の予言」の内容 である。この解釈については、１９８１年に起こった教皇暗殺未遂を示したものであるという解釈をヨハネ・パウロ２世は著作において示しているが、実際には多くの食い違いが生じていることを指摘されている。
まず、 大十字架のもとにひざまずいたとされる教皇は一団の兵士達によって”殺された”と示されているが、実際には暗殺未遂事件に終わっている こと、そして 他の司教や司祭なども次々と死んでいったとされているが、この部分については一切事件性がないこと などである。また１９６０年以降のルシアが本物かどうかは別として、発表された予言の内容は一部であるとし、教皇庁を提訴する事態に発展している。これに関して多くの人は２代にも渡って教皇が伏せなければならなかった内容ではないと指摘しており、さらにルシア自身は「ヨハネの黙示録」に関わる内容であったとも指摘している。
第三の予言がローマに渡った経緯。。実は、ファティマ第三の予言は１９４０年代にルシアが書面にしたものをダ・カルヴァ司教という人物に直接手渡されたとされている。また、１９４６年にはこのダ・カルヴァ司教がいる場所において、１９６０年を待つ理由を聞かれたルシアは「聖母が望んでおられる」と明確に答えていたという。正確には、 ルシアの死、もしくは１９６０年に公開されるべきものであるというのが、ファティマ第三の予言における厳命であった のである。しかし、１９５７年、ダ・カルヴァ司教は 副司教ヴェナンシオにこの貴重な手記をローマへと移送するように委任したという。
。その時の教皇はピオ１２世であったが、内容については１９６０年まで確認しない方針をとったとされている。。そして、話は戻り１９６０年の再封印になるのだが、教皇の交代、そしてルシアの不審な点などを考えるに、 第三の予言は改ざんされている可能性が非常に高い という研究者もいるのである。また、一部の証言では 第三の予言は公表されたような長いものでは無かったという説 もある。一体何が正しいのか？。ファティマ第三の予言は何を意味していたのであろうか。
第三の予言の真相が明かされない理由とは？。。では、仮に改ざん、あるいは一部を隠蔽されているとすれば、何故ファティマ第三の予言がそのような扱いを受ける必要があったのだろうか？。１つ考えられるのは、 ローマ教皇庁やカトリック教会にとっての「不都合な真実」が記されていたのかもしれない という予測である。また、後年のルシアは１９６０年代以降明らかに言動も変えており、ローマ教皇を肯定するようなパフォーマンスを見せていた。特に、教皇と対面したルシアが教皇の差し出した手に口づけをしたというエピソードは、キリスト教という宗教上の概念としても非常におかしい行動であったと言われている。
後年（正確には予言を開示するべきだと言われていた１９６０年以後のルシア）が偽物であったとすれば、真実を闇の中にしまう必要があったのは、ローマ教皇庁やカトリック教会であったのかもしれない。この ルシアも２００５年には亡くなっており、もはや真相を究明することは不可能に近い と言われている。しかし、この ファティマ第三の予言には明らかに不可思議な点が多いことも事実 としてあるのだ。参考
