English Version
When you look something up or shop online, you probably use Google, Yahoo!, Amazon, YouTube, or other familiar sites. But the internet has a much darker side. People often say that in the modern age, there is almost nothing you cannot buy online—and there are areas ordinary users should not casually enter.
One of those areas is known as the dark web.
The Three Layers of the Internet
The internet is often divided into three broad categories.
Surface web: This is the part of the internet you can reach through search engines like Google or Yahoo!. Sites such as Amazon, Rakuten, YouTube, and the pages we use every day belong here.
Deep web: This refers to pages that do not appear in ordinary search engine results. Examples include private account pages, admin screens, members-only sites, and social media pages that require an ID and password. The deep web is sometimes confused with “dark sites,” but it is not the same thing.
Dark web: This is a hidden area that usually requires special software, browsers, and technical knowledge to access. Rumors say that almost anything can be found there, though many claims should be treated with caution.
How People Connect to the Dark Web
To access the dark web, people commonly use a special browser such as Tor. Tor was developed to allow highly secure, confidential communication. It has been supported by organizations including the U.S. government, international broadcasters, Google, and the University of Cambridge.
Online, Tor is sometimes associated with the word “onion.” That comes from “onion routing,” a method of encrypted communication. Like the layers of an onion, information is wrapped in multiple layers of encryption, making the communication difficult to trace.
This is not a recommendation to access the dark web. Hidden networks can expose users to scams, malware, illegal material, and serious personal risk.
What Is Said to Be Sold on the Dark Web
In this hidden area, people claim that almost anything can be bought or sold. Commonly reported examples include illegal goods, stolen data, and dangerous services.
Illegal goods are said to include drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and stimulants, as well as stolen credit cards, weapons, and even rumors of human organ trafficking.
One of the most famous dark web marketplaces was called Silk Road. In 2013, it reportedly had 957,079 registered users. It was known for listings involving illegal drugs such as marijuana, LSD, cocaine, and heroin, as well as malware, pirated content, and stolen accounts. Transactions often used Bitcoin, likely because users believed it would make them harder to trace.
Silk Road has since been shut down.
Illegal Content and Urban Legends
The dark web is also associated with videos and content that could never circulate openly on the surface web. Stories mention human experimentation footage, illegal pornography, and the infamous “Red Room” urban legend, where people supposedly watch live-streamed murders.
Many Red Room stories remain unverified and are often treated as internet horror legends rather than confirmed fact.
Illegal Services and Scams
There are also said to be many phishing schemes involving copied websites and scam pages. Behind some of these operations are hackers, and in some cases hacking skills are allegedly offered as a service.
There are also rumors of websites where people can hire hitmen. As with many dark web stories, these claims are difficult to verify, and many such sites may be scams designed to steal money or personal information.
Ordinary Sites Exist There Too
Although the dark web has a sinister image, not everything connected through privacy-focused networks is automatically illegal or frightening. Some ordinary sites and services, including versions of familiar platforms such as Facebook or Twitter/X, have been accessible through these systems.
Still, that does not make the wider environment safe for casual browsing.
Frightening Stories from the Dark Web
The Black Market Forum
One story comes from a person who was secretly browsing a hacking forum connected to a black market. They were not there to buy anything or hire a service—just to look around.
Then a private message arrived from an unknown sender.
“I’ve been watching you. I see you here often. You’re not here to buy anything or use a service. You’re just a kid poking around. I don’t care, but other people might. If you know what’s good for you, stop.”
Was the user really being watched the whole time? Or was it just a scare tactic? Either way, the message left the impression that in such places, someone may always be observing.
The Mysterious Server
Another story is said to come from the time before Google became widely used. Back then, many websites had simple structures, and some people wandered from blog to blog, link to link.
One person claimed they eventually reached a strange page. It was very well designed, and the page source and JavaScript contained various hidden IP addresses. When the person checked them, some led to empty servers, while others appeared to belong to universities.
One server stood out. Inside an HTML file was a huge directory of TIFF images. The contents allegedly included records that looked like something a psychologist or mental health professional might keep, along with clearly military-looking data and medical data.
As the person continued browsing, a new file suddenly appeared. When they clicked it, a message appeared:
“We are watching you.”
Then the server went down.
There are also urban legends about people having their webcams hacked and being watched without knowing it.
Final Thoughts
The internet we use every day is only a small part of what exists online. Beneath the familiar surface are private databases, hidden pages, and darker corners filled with rumors, scams, and dangerous material.
Even if you are curious, accessing the dark web is not recommended. In places like that, you may not simply be looking into the darkness—the darkness may be looking back.
