Not so long ago, radio and newspapers were among the main sources of information. Today, far fewer people listen to the radio on a daily basis. But in Russia, a country often associated with eerie rumors and occult-tinged mysteries, there is said to be a radio station that has continued broadcasting an unexplained signal for more than 30 years.
Its name is UVB-76, also known as “The Buzzer.”
What Is UVB-76?
As mentioned above, UVB-76 is a mysterious radio broadcast that has reportedly continued for more than three decades.
The content is extremely simple: a repeated sound like “buzz… buzz… buzz…” at regular intervals. No one normally speaks. The same steady tone has simply continued, again and again, for years.
The broadcast is said to have begun no later than 1973. According to reports from 1982, it was then broadcasting short electronic tones every two seconds. In the early 1990s, however, the sound reportedly changed into the buzzer-like tone it is known for today.
Even through the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, the signal did not disappear.
Investigations have suggested that the broadcast came from a small village north of Moscow, Russia. The reason for the broadcast, however, remains unclear.
How to Hear the Broadcast
People in Russia can reportedly tune a radio to the frequency 4625 kHz and hear the strange buzzer repeating at fixed intervals.
Online, the broadcast has also attracted a great deal of attention from people interested in mysteries, numbers stations, military radio, and unexplained signals.
The Day It Stopped in 2010
On June 10, 2010, the sound suddenly stopped.
However, the silence apparently did not last long. The broadcast resumed soon afterward. After it returned, a calm, deep voice with a Russian accent reportedly spoke the letters and numbers “U-V-B-7-6.” After that, the buzzer continued for several more months.
In August of the same year, the broadcast began stopping repeatedly. On August 25, listeners reportedly heard noises that sounded like someone moving around near the broadcasting location: footsteps, background sounds, and even something resembling a Geiger counter, a device used to measure radiation.
At times, voices resembling human conversation have also been heard. Because of this, some listeners believe the buzzer may be broadcast in an analog way, through a microphone picking up sound in a room, rather than being generated purely by a machine.
What Is the Purpose of UVB-76?
There are many rumors about the purpose of UVB-76.
Some say it could be a secret signal sent to spies. Others claim it might be connected to nuclear missile launch systems. But if the information were truly that secret, would it really be broadcast on a radio frequency that ordinary people can listen to?
Other theories are more practical. Some believe the buzzer could be a signal used by the military or another facility to detect equipment failure. Another possibility is that it is used to confirm whether radio receiving equipment is functioning properly.
For now, the real reason remains unknown.
Still Unexplained
UVB-76 is said to still be broadcasting today. If you are in a place where it is legal and safe to use a shortwave radio, you may be able to tune to 4625 kHz and hear it for yourself.
If you travel in Russia or anywhere else, check current travel advisories and local laws, and do not attempt to enter or approach restricted facilities. Listening by radio or online is the safest way to experience this mystery.
And while radio may seem old-fashioned, it can still be extremely useful during disasters such as earthquakes or other emergencies. Keeping a radio on hand may be a good idea—not only for mysteries like this, but for real-world safety as well.
