Ikuta Ryokuchi, also known as Ikuta Green Space, is a large public park in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. With hiking trails, museums, and wide wooded areas, it is busy during the day with local families, hikers, and visitors.

But the park also has another reputation: among some locals, it is known as one of Kanagawa’s haunted places. People sometimes call it “Night Ikuta” or “Back Ikuta,” referring to the idea that the park feels very different after dark or when entered from its less prominent side.

The main reason for this reputation is a real disaster that happened here in 1971. During the Kawasaki Loam Stratum Slope Failure Experiment Accident, 15 people connected to the experiment and the media were killed.

The 1971 landslide experiment accident

On November 11, 1971, an experiment was carried out in Ikuta Ryokuchi to study slope collapse. In simple terms, researchers were attempting to create an artificial landslide by spraying water onto a slope, with the goal of collecting data for disaster prevention.

The experiment went terribly wrong. A slope failure occurred, and the accident killed 15 people in total, including experiment staff and members of the press. Another 10 people were seriously or lightly injured.

Today, the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art stands in the area connected to the accident site. Near the museum entrance, there is also a memorial monument for those who died.

Because of this history, many ghost stories have gathered around the park. Visitors and locals have reported, or at least repeated rumors of, experiences such as:

  • Feeling many eyes staring from the grass near the memorial
  • Earphones suddenly breaking while running past the memorial
  • A person acting strangely after visiting the Taro Okamoto Museum of Art with their partner
  • A spirit photograph said to show six ghosts
  • Floating ghost lights seen at night

These are local ghost stories and should be treated as rumors rather than confirmed events. Still, for people who know the history of the accident, the atmosphere around the memorial can feel heavy.

Ikuta Ryokuchi is also connected by ridgeline to Midorigaoka Cemetery, another place sometimes mentioned in Kanagawa ghost-spot discussions.

“Night Ikuta” and “Back Ikuta”

Ikuta Ryokuchi is a very large park. It includes the Masugata-yama hiking course, museums, a science center, and the Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum, often called Minka-en. On weekends, it can be lively with tourists, and even on weekdays it is a familiar daytime recreation area for locals.

At the same time, people in the area have long repeated two informal “rules” for avoiding strange experiences:

  • Do not go at night: daytime Ikuta is a leisure spot, but “Night Ikuta” is said to be haunted.
  • Enter from the main entrance: “Front Ikuta” is considered normal, while “Back Ikuta” is said to be more unsettling.

The idea that the back side of the park is more likely to produce paranormal encounters is part of the local folklore. Some people even refer to it as the “back side of Ikuta Ryokuchi.”

Because a real accident killed 15 people there, it is not surprising that the park became associated with ghosts. What makes the rumors stranger is that some of the reported phenomena do not seem directly connected to the accident.

For example, there are stories of a parent and child ghost being seen in the park. The ghost lights mentioned earlier are also said to have appeared in places such as the pond deeper inside the park, Masugata-yama, Minka-en, and the central plaza, which are away from the accident site.

So if the stories are to be believed, the question becomes: what kind of spirits are said to remain in Ikuta Ryokuchi?

Rumors of suicides and other dark stories

There are also rumors that people who died by suicide have been found in Ikuta Ryokuchi. These claims are often repeated in local ghost-spot discussions, though they should be understood as rumors unless confirmed by reliable sources.

Some people say that large parks sometimes become places where troubled people are found dead, and Ikuta Ryokuchi’s tragic past may have made that image stronger. In the most occult version of the story, the spirits connected to the old accident are said to “draw in” the souls of the living.

That interpretation is only a ghost story, but it is part of the park’s darker reputation. For most visitors, Ikuta Ryokuchi is simply a large and pleasant public park. But for someone already carrying serious distress, a lonely wooded area at night could feel dangerous in a very real, non-supernatural way.

If you visit, go during normal hours, stay on marked paths, respect the memorial, and do not enter closed or unsafe areas. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, contact local emergency services or a crisis hotline immediately.

Kanagawa has many other places with frightening reputations, including Mitsuike Park, Hotel Skylove, Midorigaoka Cemetery, Nojima Park, Jason Village, Shitodo Cave, Yabitsu Pass, the Old Zenba Tunnel, Yamagami Tunnel, and Uchikoshi Bridge.

Ikuta Ryokuchi may be a daytime attraction with museums and hiking trails, but after sunset, its history and local legends give it a very different face.
