Urban legends come in many forms, from stories about the Rothschild family’s secrets to rumors about the Freemasons. But some legends are eventually explained, like the “suicide of Takako Konishi,” while others simply fade from public memory.
This time, let’s look back at one of those faded urban legends: the so-called “earthworm burger.”
What was the earthworm burger legend?
The setting of the “earthworm burger” rumor was the United States.
According to the story, an employee at a fast-food restaurant saw something disturbing in the kitchen: earthworm meat being prepared for hamburger patties. Afterward, the employee was supposedly paid a large amount of hush money to keep quiet.
The rumor began spreading in the 1970s and was used as a way to criticize various fast-food chains. It is often said that the legend grew out of discomfort with American food culture, the country’s obesity problem, and a broader disgust toward junk food.
By the 1980s, however, the legend quickly lost momentum. Today, it is mostly treated as a nostalgic urban legend rather than a serious rumor.
In Japan, a slightly different version spread. In that version, a high school girl finds a red string-like object while eating a hamburger. When she looks closely, it resembles an earthworm, and she vomits on the spot. After complaining to the restaurant, she is allegedly paid 50,000 yen to keep quiet.
Why did the rumor fade away?
One major reason the “earthworm burger” legend faded is simple: earthworm meat would be inefficient.
Earthworm meat is said to be far more expensive than the beef normally used in hamburger patties, and it would require careful, time-consuming preparation. For a fast-food restaurant, where low cost and speed are everything, using earthworms would make little practical sense.
McDonald’s also played a major role in pushing back against the rumor. Through media advertising and cooperation with farmers, the company actively fought claims it saw as slander against fast-food restaurants. Those efforts were successful, and the “earthworm burger” rumor largely disappeared.
Would an earthworm burger actually taste good?
At this point, some readers may have the same strange question: if someone really made an earthworm burger, would it taste good?
Apparently, the magazine GON!, which was published before Jitsuwa Knuckles, once ran an article in which people actually made and ate an “earthworm burger.” The verdict was harsh: it was reportedly very bad.
The article also pointed out the same problems mentioned above: high cost and too much preparation. Even when tested in real life, the idea did not seem practical.
Real foreign-object cases in hamburgers
The “earthworm burger” is generally treated as an unrealistic urban legend. However, there have been real cases in which foreign objects were found in hamburgers and other fast food.
Around 2014, McDonald’s Japan faced a series of reported contamination incidents. The foreign objects reportedly included insects, metal screws, and even a human tooth.
Australia had an even more disturbing case. In April 2019, reports spread internationally that a used condom had been found inside a hamburger eaten by a two-year-old child.
The full details of the incident were not made public, but some speculation online suggested that an employee may have placed it there intentionally. The child was quickly taken for testing for sexually transmitted infections, and many people online expressed concern for both the child and the mother.
If you ever encounter a serious food-safety issue while traveling, avoid eating the item, keep the receipt and packaging if possible, notify the restaurant, and contact local health authorities if necessary.
Even urban legends have a shelf life
The “earthworm burger” was once a memorable fast-food horror story, but today it survives mostly as a retro urban legend. McDonald’s public response, the impracticality of using earthworms, and even taste-test articles helped drain the rumor of its power.
Modern society still has plenty of urban legends. But decades from now, some of today’s most popular rumors may end up just like the earthworm burger: strange, nostalgic, and mostly forgotten.

「ロスチャイルド家の秘密」や「フリーメイソン」など、都市伝説は様々なものが存在している。しかし、中には 「コニシタカコの自殺」のように解決してしまったものや「ミミズバーガー」といったような廃れてしまったものがあることをご存知だろうか。。今回は廃れた都市伝説として、「ミミズバーガー」を改めて振り返ってみることにする。。「コニシタカコの自殺」に関して知りたい方は、前回の記事を読んでもらうと幸いだ。。ミミズバーガーとはどんな都市伝説なのか？。
「 ミミズバーガー」の舞台はアメリカ。。あるファストフード店で働いていた従業員が、異常な光景を目撃してしまう。。それは、パティのためにミミズの肉を調理していた光景だった。。その後、従業員は多額の口止め料をもらって黙らされたという内容である。。「ミミズバーガー」の話は 1970 年代から広がり、様々なファストフード店を批判する際に使われた。。この都市伝説が生まれた背景には、肥満が問題となっているアメリカの食文化やジャンクフードに対する嫌悪感があるといわれている。
。ただし、この都市伝説自体は 1980 年代になると一気に下火となってしまう。。そして現在では、懐かしい都市伝説として見向きもされなくなってしまった。。一方で日本では、女子高生がハンバーガーを食べた際に赤い紐を発見。。よく見るとミミズのような見た目だったため、その場で嘔吐。。店に対してクレームしたところ、 5 万円で口止めされたという内容で広まっていった。。何故「ミミズバーガー」は廃れたのか？。。「ミミズバーガー」が廃れた理由は、そもそもミミズの肉が非効率的であるためだ。
。ミミズの肉は一般的なパティに使われる牛肉よりも非常に高額である上に、細かな下ごしらえをしなくてはならない。。安さとスピードが命であるファストフード店で、そのような手間も費用もかかるミミズを使うのはあまりにも非効率的だ。。また、マクドナルドによる大規模な活動も「ミミズバーガー」が廃れた原因だ。。マクドナルドはメディアでの広告や農家との連携などを積極的に行い、ファストフード店に対する誹謗中傷に対抗。。結果として、マクドナルドの活動は大成功し、「ミミズバーガー」の噂を無くすことに成功した。
。ミミズバーガーは本当に美味しいのか？。。ここまで読んだ読者の中には、ある疑問が浮かんでいるはずだ。。それは、「実際のところ、ミミズバーガーは旨いのか？」というであるだろう。。実は「実話ナックルズ」の前に発行されていた「 GON ！」という雑誌にて、実際に「ミミズバーガー」を作って食べてみた記事がある。。結論としては、記事では非常にまずいと低評価された。。また、記事内でもコストの高さと手間の多さを指摘しており、実際に作ってみた上でも実用性が無い模様だ。
。ハンバーガーに混入した危険なモノたち。。「ミミズバーガー」はありえない都市伝説として片付けられているが、実際にハンバーガーに異物が混入した事件は数多くある。。例えば 2014 年頃には、日本のマクドナルドで立て続けに異物混入事件が発生。。混入した異物は様々であり、虫や金属製のネジ、人の歯などがあった。。一方で、オーストラリアではこれ以上に嫌な物が入っていた。。それは、使用済みのコンドームである。。2019 年 4 月、 2 歳の子どもが食べたハンバーガー内に使用済みのコンドームが混入していたという事件は世界各地で話題となった。
。事件の詳細は明らかになっていないものの、店員が故意に入れたのではないかと推測されている。。使用済みのコンドーム入りハンバーガーを食べた子どもは、すぐに性病検査へ。。ネット上では、子どもや母親を心配する声がいくつも挙がった。。あの都市伝説もいつかは廃れるかもしれない。今回は、 廃れた 都市伝説「ミミズバーガー」について紹介した。。「ミミズバーガー」はマクドナルドの活動や、実際に検証された味の悪さなどにより、現在では懐かしい都市伝説として扱われている。
