Oishi Kannon is connected to a local legend about a young woman named Oishi, who is said to have been buried alive as a human sacrifice. According to rumors, people have heard a woman crying at night around the area, and some claim to have seen a shadowy female figure.
The story says that construction once began here on a pond or reservoir meant to help prevent flooding. However, repeated accidents forced the work to stop for a time. Local residents then allegedly chose a young woman named Oishi and buried her alive as a human pillar.
After that, the accidents reportedly stopped, and the construction was completed without further trouble. But before long, people began to report strange phenomena at night, including the sound of a woman weeping and sightings of a human silhouette in the darkness.
The construction supervisor of the Senganishi Embankment and his entire family are said to have died mysteriously soon afterward. The legend also claims that even those connected to Oishi eventually met untimely deaths.
Fearing that these events were the result of Oishi’s curse, local residents built Oishi Kannon to console her spirit. Even today, the area is still rumored to be the site of unexplained encounters.
The site is associated with Nishine Senganishi, Kanegasaki, Isawa District, Iwate Prefecture. If you visit, be respectful of the memorial and local residents, follow posted rules, and avoid entering restricted or unsafe areas, especially at night or near waterworks.

昔、人柱として生き埋めにされた「おいし」という若い女性の霊が出ると言われている。夜になると女性の泣き声や人影が目撃されるという噂がある。かつて洪水対策の池として工事を始めたが、度重なる事故により一時中止となった。地元住民は「おいし」という若い女性を人柱として生き埋めにした。その結果、事故は治まり工事は無事に完了したが、夜な夜なこの辺りで女性の泣き声や人影が目撃されるようになった。千貫石堤の工事責任者とその家族は間もなく全員が謎の死を遂げ、おいしと関わった人物までも死に絶えてしまった。
