Kanawajima Island, in Hiroshima’s Minami Ward, is said to be a place where the spirits of people who died after the atomic bombing sometimes appear. There are also rumors of ghostly soldiers being seen on the island.
When the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, around 500 people were reportedly transported to Kanawajima Island. They received nursing care there, but many are said to have died while covered in blood and desperately asking for water.
Because of this tragic history, Kanawajima is not a place to visit lightly or as a prank. Travelers should treat the island and its history with respect, avoid entering restricted or private areas, and follow local rules if visiting.
