In the first part, we looked at the basic outline of the events known as the “Miracle of Fatima.” But the story contains many other episodes. The prophecies themselves were already extraordinary enough, yet even after they were given, more phenomena later came to be described as miracles.
This time, we will look at why the events in a small town in Portugal became such a major uproar, while following some of the episodes surrounding the children.
The Children Were Detained on the Promised 13th
When the Virgin Mary is said to have first appeared at Fatima, she reportedly asked the three children to come and meet her on the 13th of every month. This began with the first encounter on May 13, 1917.
However, that monthly promise soon ran into interference.
By July 13 of the same year, when the children received the Fatima prophecies, the crowd is said to have grown to around 5,000 people. According to the usual pattern, the three children would receive a message and then tell their parents and others what they had heard. But as large numbers of pilgrims began visiting the small town, public order likely became a serious concern.
The local administrative authority at the time apparently took the situation very seriously. On the morning of August 13, the day of the next scheduled appearance, Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta were detained. They were released on the 15th, but the incident shows just how closely the Fatima situation was being watched.
As a result, one month after receiving the prophecy, the three children were unable to keep their promised meeting with Mary on August 13. It is said that nearly 20,000 people had gathered in Fatima that day.
Perhaps triggered by this detention, Mary is said to have appeared again on August 19 and left the following words:
“If they had not taken you away to the town, the miracle would have been greater. You will see Saint Joseph, the Child Jesus blessing the people, Our Lady of the Rosary, and Our Lady of Sorrows.”
The exact meaning of these words is not clear. But one possible interpretation is that, if Lucia and the others had not been obstructed by the authorities, an even greater miracle might have occurred.
Then, on September 13, a crowd said to number 30,000 gathered. The following month, on October 13, the miracle took place before a crowd sometimes estimated at 70,000.
The Miracle of the Sun
From May 13, 1917 onward, Lucia and the other two children reportedly told their parents and local Catholics in detail that they had met the Virgin Mary. Among those messages was a prophecy that a miracle would occur on October 13 so that everyone would be able to believe in her.
Just five months after the first appearance, an event later known as the “Miracle of the Sun” was reportedly witnessed across a wide area, said to extend within a radius of about 50 kilometers.
In front of the gathered crowd, the sun was said to have moved wildly across the sky. Some witnesses reportedly saw it in various colors.
Among those who claimed to witness the miracle were many Catholics from different walks of life, including a seminary professor and lawyers. There is also testimony that a boy who later became a priest saw the sun’s movement from a location about 18 kilometers away.
No actual astronomical effect has been confirmed. Still, just as Lucia herself later understood that the angels the children had seen were visions, the story of Fatima rests on the claim that a large crowd did, at the very least, witness what they believed to be the “Miracle of the Sun.”
For travelers visiting Fatima today, it is an active religious pilgrimage site. Visitors should stay in public areas, respect services and local rules, and avoid unsafe or restricted locations.
What Happened to the Children
As described in the first part, Francisco and Jacinta died very young, at the ages of 10 and 9. In later years, however, their names became widely known within the Catholic Church as saints.
Stories About Jacinta
Of the two siblings who died first, the younger sister, Jacinta, left behind many stories.
According to Lucia’s biography, Jacinta received not only prophecies shortly before her death, but also many private revelations. In addition, Jacinta’s body was exhumed twice, in 1935 and 1951. It is said that on both occasions, her face showed no signs of decay.
On May 13, 2017, it was formally decided that she would be recognized as a saint. Today, she is known as Saint Jacinta Marto.
Lucia’s Later Life
Lucia, as Mary was said to have told her, lived out her natural life. She died of heart failure at the age of 97.
After the events surrounding the Miracle of Fatima, Lucia spent her life following the instructions of the Virgin Mary, who had called herself Our Lady of the Rosary. She entered the Dorothean Sisters and became a nun.
As the only surviving person who had directly received the Fatima prophecies, Lucia left behind biographies, memoirs, and other writings. In her later years, she also met Pope John Paul II, the pope who beatified Francisco and Jacinta.
Lucia became a messenger of the Miracle of Fatima. Although she was only one sister within the Church, she held tremendous influence in Catholic circles during her lifetime, and that influence is still felt today.

前編では 「ファティマの奇跡」 と呼ばれた一連の出来事について大まかに紹介してきたが、この逸話には他にも沢山のエピソードがある。もちろん、ファティマの予言自体が充分に大きな出来事ではあったのだが、この予言の後にも奇跡と呼ばれている現象が起こっている。今回はポルトガルの小さな街で起こったファティマの奇跡が”どうしてここまで大きな騒動になったのか？”ということについてエピソードを交えながら紹介していこう。ファティマの聖母が約束した13日に監禁された子どもたち。
。ファティマに現れた聖母は最初に3人の子どもたちに「毎月13日に会いに来てほしい」というお願いをしている。これは1917年5月13日に初めて聖母マリアと対峙した時の話である。しかし、この毎月13日という約束には邪魔が入った。同年の7月13日にファティマの予言を受けた時の群衆は5000人ほど居たとされている。。流れとしては、3人が予言を受けてそれを両親達に伝えるのが毎月の恒例になっていたようだが、小さな街に大勢の参拝者が訪れ始めると治安的な問題もあったのだろう。
この事態を重くみた当時の行政の責任者が毎月の予定であった8月13日の朝にルシア、フランシスコ、ジャシンタの3人を監禁している。15日には解放されたが、当時のファティマでどの程度この問題が注視されていたのかが分かる出来事の1つだ。結果的に予言を与えられてから1ヶ月経った8月13日に3人はマリアとの約束を果たすことが出来なかった。※8月13日には2万人近い数の人々がファティマに訪れていたとされている※ 。しかし、この監禁行為が引き金になったのか8月19日にマリアが現れて以下のような言葉を残したという。
『もし人々があなたたちを無理やり町へ連れ出したりしなかったなら、奇跡はもっと壮大なものとなったでしょう。あなたたちは、聖ヨセフと、人々を祝福する幼子イエスと、”ロザリオの聖母”と”苦しみの聖母”を見るでしょう。』 。出典：ダニエル・レジュ; 梶野修平訳 『第3の予言: UFOからの警告・ファティマ』 たま出版 。この言葉が示す正確な意味は分からないが、おそらくルシア達が行政責任者によって邪魔をされていなければ、もっと大きな奇跡が起こったという意味に解釈が出来るのではないだろうか？
。そして、9月13日にはついに3万人もの群衆が集まり。翌月10月13日には7万人とも言われる群衆の中でその奇跡は起こった。ファティマの聖母が起こしたと言われる太陽の奇跡。。画像引用元： 。1917年の5月13日からルシアたちの3人は聖母マリアに会ったことを親や周囲のカトリック教徒に事細かく伝えていたという。その中に、10月13日には皆がこの聖母を信じられるようにと奇跡を起こすという予言もあったのだ。最初の出現から僅か5ヶ月後の同日、半径50キロメートルという広範囲な場所で目撃されたのが「太陽の奇跡」と呼ばれるものだった。
。集まった群衆の前で、太陽が縦横無尽に動いたり、ある者は様々な色に見えたという。。この奇跡を見た群衆の中には神学校の教授であったり、弁護士など職種を問わずにカトリック教徒が多数いたとされる。また、18キロ離れた場所では後に神父となる少年がこの太陽の動きを見ていたという証言もある。天体的な影響は実際には確認されていないという事だが、子どもたちが見た天使も後の幻視であったという事を本人が自覚しているように、少なくとも 大勢の群衆がこの「太陽の奇跡」を目の当たりにしている のだ。
子どもたちのその後。前編で紹介したように、フランシスコとジャシンタは10歳、9歳という若さで亡くなってしまったが、後年聖人としてその名前をカトリック教会に広めることになった。ジャシンタにまつわる逸話。先に亡くなってしまった兄妹でも特に妹のジャシンタは多くの逸話を残している。ルシアの伝記によると、死の直前の予言だけではなく私的啓示と呼ばれるものを多く受けていたという。さらに、ジャシンタの遺体は1935年と1951年に合計で2度掘り返されたが、顔に一切の腐敗がなかったという。
2017年の5月13日にヨハネ・パウロ2世によって正式に聖列者とされることが決められた。そのため、現在では聖ジャシンタ・マルトとして扱われている。ルシアのその後。ルシアは3人の中でマリアに告げられた通り天命を全うし、97歳という高齢で心不全によって亡くなった。ファティマの奇跡の騒動が起こった後は、ロザリオの聖母と名乗った聖母マリアの言いつけを生涯守り、ドロテア修道会に入りシスターになる。ファティマの予言を直接受けた唯一の生き残りであった彼女は伝記や回顧録などを残しているが、フランシスコとジャシンタを列福したローマ教皇であるヨハネ・パウロ2世とも晩年には会っている。
ファティマの奇跡の伝道者となった彼女は、いちシスターでしかなかったものの、生前はもちろん、現在でもカトリック教会において絶大な影響力を持っているという
