She does not call out or try to speak. According to the rumor, she simply follows behind in silence. Then, before you realize it, she is gone.
Lake Suwa has long been associated with deaths from accidents and suicide, and it is said that bodies have sometimes surfaced near the floodgates. Perhaps, the story suggests, those spirits cannot let go of their wish to return home—and so they fall into step with the living on their way back.
