The Legend of the Okiku Doll
Mannenji Temple in Iwamizawa, Hokkaido, is associated with one of Japan’s best-known “cursed doll” stories: the Okiku Doll, famous in rumor and folklore for hair that is said to grow on its own.
According to the story, when Eikichi Suzuki was 17 years old, he bought a bob-haired doll for his 3-year-old younger sister. She was delighted and reportedly kept the doll close to her at all times, treasuring it deeply.
However, after catching a cold that worsened, the little girl’s health declined, and she eventually passed away. The doll was then placed on the family Buddhist altar as a keepsake in her memory.
It is said that after this, the doll’s hair began to grow naturally.
