Yomotsu Hirasaka: The Legendary Slope to Japan’s Underworld in Shimane

The Immortal Cells of Henrietta Lacks: HeLa, Eternal Life, and the Horror of Never Dying
目次

English Version

At Yomotsu Hirasaka in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, stone pillars stand like a torii gate, marking a place long associated with Japan’s mythic underworld.

According to local legend, people who take photos here are said to capture strange images with unusual frequency. The slope is believed to connect the world of the living with Yomi, the realm of the dead in Japanese mythology. Some say that the souls of the dead are drawn from the other side, which may be why reports of eerie phenomena are often linked to this spot.

Location: 2352 Iya, Higashiizumo-cho, Matsue, Shimane Prefecture.

If you visit, treat the area with respect, follow local signs, stay on public paths, and avoid disturbing nearby residents or private property.
