Cape Kyan in Okinawa: Wartime Spirits and Cliffside Rumors

Japan’s Scariest Emergency Alert Sounds: Earthquake Warnings, NHK Chimes, and the Civil Protection Siren

English Version

Cape Kyan, located in Itoman City at the southern tip of Okinawa’s main island, is rumored to be haunted by the spirits of soldiers, injured people, and even a woman said to have no nose.

During the Battle of Okinawa, this area is said to have been one of the final places reached by Japanese soldiers and local residents who had nowhere left to flee. Because of that history, many people are believed to have lost their lives here.

The cape is also known for its steep cliffs, and even today there are said to be many suicides in the area. Some people wonder, quietly and uneasily, whether those who come here are being drawn in by something unseen.

If you visit, treat the site with respect. Stay on safe paths, avoid the cliff edge, and do not enter restricted or dangerous areas.

Location: 1156-2 Kyan, Itoman City, Okinawa Prefecture
