Oyama Shell Mound in Ginowan, Okinawa, is associated with a wide range of eerie stories and reported experiences.
According to local accounts, some visitors have claimed to hear the groans of men and women. Others say that people who go there are somehow prone to injury or illness afterward. There is also a rumor of a child’s spirit bouncing a ball; in this story, anyone who accepts the ball from the child is said to die. Another account mentions the apparition of an elderly woman.
The site is also said to be one of the three great training grounds for yuta, the traditional spiritual mediums of Okinawa. Because of that, it is regarded by some as a place with especially strong spiritual power.
Some stories go even further, claiming that the shell mound is connected to “the world of the dead,” and that anyone who enters carelessly may not be guaranteed to leave alive.
