On July 13, 1917, in Fatima, a small town in Portugal, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared at a place known as Cabeço Hill and given three prophecies to three children.
Christian history is full of miraculous stories: rumors of Christ or angels appearing around the world, people claiming to have seen God, and other accounts that blur the line between faith, fear, and mystery. But the event later known as the Prophecies of Fatima became far more than a simple rumor. According to the story, it began about a year earlier, when a boy who called himself the “Angel of Peace” appeared before the children and taught them words and gestures of prayer.
For travelers, Fatima is a major Catholic pilgrimage destination. If you visit, stay in public areas, follow local rules, and be respectful of worshippers and religious sites.
Before the Virgin Mary: the Angel of Peace
Why did the prophecy of Fatima, which began in a small Portuguese town, come to influence people around the world?
A series of events, witnessed by crowds and later discussed for generations, was eventually officially recognized by the Catholic Church and the Vatican as an apparition of the Virgin Mary. But before the children met Mary, there was another strange sign.
The figure who appeared to them was said to be a boy calling himself the Angel of Peace. He looked about 14 to 17 years old.
The three children were Lucia dos Santos, Francisco Marto, and Jacinta Marto. All three reportedly came from Catholic families. Francisco was Jacinta’s older brother, and Lucia was their cousin.
According to the accounts, the boy taught the children prayers and methods of prayer, including a gesture in which they touched their foreheads to the ground. The angel in the form of a boy is said to have visited them several times beginning around the spring of 1916.
Lucia’s own memoirs describe this angel as a vision.
The apparition of Mary and the request for the 13th
On May 13, 1917, two months before the famous prophecies, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to the children for the first time.
The woman, believed by the children to be Mary, reportedly asked them to come and meet her on the 13th of every month. During this first conversation, Lucia asked where she had come from and whether the children would be able to go to heaven. Mary is said to have told them to continue praying the rosary.
The second meeting and a prophecy of heaven
Although the Prophecies of Fatima are usually associated with July 13, the children’s conversations with Mary included another prediction before then.
Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta were reportedly told that the two younger children, Francisco and Jacinta, would be taken to heaven before Lucia.
In a sense, this was also treated as a prophecy. As the words suggested, Francisco died at the age of 10, and Jacinta died at only 9.
There is also a strange and painful story surrounding Jacinta’s final days.
One year after the Fatima prophecies, in 1918, Francisco and Jacinta became ill during the Spanish flu pandemic, an influenza outbreak that spread around the world. Both children needed hospitalization and treatment. However, it is said that they refused hospital care because they wanted to keep Mary’s instructions and continue going to church to pray.
Francisco, who refused life-prolonging treatment in the hospital, died at home. Eventually, Jacinta’s parents forced her to enter the hospital for treatment.
By then, the illness that had gone untreated for months had reportedly developed into pleurisy. Jacinta underwent surgery. Because her heart and other organs were affected, the operation was performed without anesthesia, and two of her ribs were removed. It is difficult to imagine that level of suffering for a girl who was only nine years old.
Even so, Jacinta did not stop praying.
On February 19, 1920, she confessed to a hospital priest and told him that she would die alone the next day. The priest answered that her condition had improved and that she would likely recover by the following day.
But the day after her confession, Jacinta died alone in the hospital, at a time when no nurses were with her. Her own prediction had come true.
According to Lucia’s writings, Jacinta had already predicted in October 1918 that she would suffer and die alone.
The Prophecies of Fatima: July 13, 1917
Returning to the main story, the Prophecies of Fatima refer to the three prophecies that Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta are said to have received from the Virgin Mary on July 13, 1917.
During their third encounter, the children were first shown, in an instant, a vision of the afterlife—specifically, a vision of hell.
It is said that Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta continued praying so intensely because this vision made them feel the need for repentance and atonement.
The prophecies themselves were described as follows.
The First Prophecy: the end of World War I and Russia
The first prophecy mainly concerned the end of World War I and turmoil in Russia.
Mary is said to have predicted that the fate of the Russian Empire would depend on people’s faith.
According to believers in the prophecy, this prediction came true. World War I did end, but the Russian Empire collapsed amid domestic social movements, eventually leading to the birth of the Soviet Union.
The Second Prophecy: the outbreak and timing of World War II
At the same time as the first prophecy, Lucia and the others are said to have received a prediction of World War II.
Specifically, the message was that if people continued to turn away from the Lord, an even worse war would begin during the reign of the next pope.
The “next pope” here refers to Pope Pius XI. He served as pope from early 1922 until his death on February 10, 1939. From the perspective of modern history, he died seven months before World War II began, so at first glance, the prophecy may appear to have missed its mark.
However, the war plans by Nazi Germany that led to World War II had reportedly already been confirmed by Hitler in November 1937.
In other words, the intention to begin the war already existed during the period described by the prophecy. For that reason, believers argue that the second prophecy also came true.
What was the Third Secret of Fatima?
At the same time as the first two prophecies, Lucia and the others were also entrusted with what became known as the Third Secret of Fatima—a prophecy whose full contents are still said by some to remain unclear.
Mary reportedly instructed that its contents be made public in 1960.
However, Pope John XXIII, who was pope in the 1960s, is said to have been left speechless after reading it, and the secret was sealed again.
The next pope, Paul VI, also reportedly examined its contents and fell into a coma.
After many twists and turns, the Vatican officially released the Third Secret in 2005. Even so, many theories remain about whether the published version revealed everything.
For that reason, the true nature of the Third Secret of Fatima is still considered uncertain by those who continue to study and debate the mystery.

1917年7月13日。ポルトガルの小さな街、 ファティマ にあるカベソの丘と呼ばれる場所に 聖母マリア が現れ、 3人の子どもたちに3つの予言を与えた という。世界各地でキリストや天使が現れたという噂や、神を見たという話などキリスト教にまつわる奇跡的なエピソードは数多くあるが、後に 【ファティマの予言】 と呼ばれるこの出来事は、単なる噂話などではない。ことの発端はファティマの予言を受けたという1917年より約1年前から自らを「平和の天使」と名乗った少年が、子どもたちの前に現れては祈りの言葉や作法などを教えていたことに始まる。
ポルトガルの小さな街で起こったファティマの予言がどうしてここまで世界的に影響を与えたのか？。多くの群衆や目撃者によって確認された一連の出来事は、後年カトリック教会やローマ教皇庁も公式に「聖母の出現」であることを認めている。まずは子どもたちと聖母マリアたちが出会った経緯から紹介しようと思う。ファティマに現れた聖母マリア。。子どもたちが聖母マリアと出会う前兆として、ファティマに少年の姿をした平和の天使を名乗る存在があった。少年の見た目は14歳～17歳くらいであった。
子どもたちはそれぞれ、ルシア・ドス・サントス、フランシスコ・マルト、ジャシンタ・マルトといい、3人共に両親共にカトリック教徒であったという。フランシスコはジャシンタの兄であり、ルシアとフランシスコ達は 従兄妹である。。子どもたちはこの少年から「祈りの言葉」や「祈りの方法（額を地面に付ける動作）」などを教えてもらっていた。少年の姿をした天使は、1916年の春頃から何度か子どもたちの元へ訪問していたと言われている。※ルシア自身の回顧録によると、この天使は「幻視」であったとされている※ 。
聖母マリアの出現と13日の願い。予言を受けた2ヶ月前の1917年5月13日、子どもたちの前に初めて聖母マリアが現れた。初めて姿を見せた聖母マリアらしき人物は「毎月13日に会いに来るように」という願いを子どもたちに言い残した。この初めての対話では、ルシアが聖母マリアに対して「どこから来たのか」や「自分たちは天国へ行けるかどうか」を聞いたところ、ロザリオの祈りを繰り返すように言われたという。2回目の対話と天国への予言。ファティマの予言は7月13日のものとされているが、ルシア達3人と聖母マリア達の対話ではルシア以外の2人を先に天国へと連れて行くことを約束されていた。
この約束はある意味 「予言」 ともされ、言葉の通り、フランシスコは10歳、ジャシンタは9歳の若さで亡くなっている。また、妹ジャシンタが亡くなった経緯に関しては少し不思議なエピソードがある。ファティマの予言から1年後、1918年に流行ったスペイン風邪（現代のインフルエンザ）が原因でフランシスコ、ジャシンタは亡くなっている。2人共に入院と治療が必要だったが、予言によって受けた聖母マリアの言い付けを守り教会に通って祈りをするために病院での治療を受けなかったと言われている。
。画像引用元： 。病院での延命を断っていた兄は自宅で亡くなり、ついに両親が妹のジャシンタを延命治療の為に強制的に入院させることにした。何ヶ月もの期間を祈りのため治療していなかった病気は 肋膜炎に進行しておりジャシンタは手術を受けることに。心臓などにも影響があったことから麻酔を使わずに肋骨2本を切断するという想像を絶するような苦しみを味わった。まだたった9歳の女の子が、である。。それでもジャシンタは祈ることを辞めず、1920年の2月19日、病院の司祭に告解をし、「翌日自分は1人でしぬだろう」ということを話した。
司祭は症状は軽くなっており翌日には治るであろうと返したが、ジャシンタは告解の翌日、病院の中にも関わらず看護師などもいない時に1人で亡くなった。自身の予言がそのまま現実になったのだ。ルシアの手記によると ジャシンタは1918年の10月には既に「自分は1人で苦しんで亡くなる」という予言をしていた という。ファティマの予言1917年7月13日。。話が少し戻るが、 ファティマの予言は冒頭に書いたように1917年7月13日にルシア達3人が聖母マリアから告げられた3つの予言 のことを指す。
3人は3回目の対峙においてまず1瞬の間に死後の世界、それも地獄という光景を見せられたという。ルシアやフランシスコ、ジャシンタが頑なに祈りを続けていったのは、この時に見せられた光景から贖罪の必要性を感じたからであると言われている。そして具体的にファティマの予言については以下のような内容であった。ファティマ第一の予言：第一次世界大戦の終局とロシア。第一の予言で語られた内容は「第一次世界大戦の終結」「ロシアの混乱」が主なものであった。。聖母マリアはロシア帝国の運命が人々の信心によって左右されると予言していた。
結果的にこの予言は的中し、第一次世界大戦は終結を迎えたものの、ロシア帝国は国内の社会運動によって崩壊しソビエト連邦の誕生に至ることになった。ファティマ第二の予言：第二次世界大戦の勃発とその時期。第一の予言と同じ時にルシア達は第二次世界大戦の勃発も予言として受けていた。具体的には予言の当時に「人々が主に背くままであれば、次の教皇の在位期間にもっとひどい戦争が起きる」というものである。ここで言う次の教皇とはピウス11世のことを指している。ピウス11世がローマ教皇に在位していたのは1922年初頭から自身が亡くなる1939年2月10日であり、近代史的には第二次世界大戦の7ヶ月前に亡くなっており、予言は一見外れたかのように見える。
しかし、 第二次世界大戦のきっかけになったナチスドイツによる戦争計画は1937年の11月にはヒトラーによって確定されていた。。つまり戦争自体の意思は既に予言期間中の中にあったいえる。つまり第二の予言は的中していたのだ。ファティマ第三の予言とは？。上記2つの予言と同じ時にルシア達は第三の予言と言われる未だに全容の公開されていないと言われる予言を託されていたという。そしてその内容は1960年に公開するようにとも聖母マリアは告げたらしい。しかし60年代のローマ教皇であったヨハネ23世はその内容を見て絶句し、再度封印されることになった。
次の教皇となったパウロ6世もその中身を確認したところ昏睡状態に陥ったとされている。様々な経緯を辿って2005年に教皇庁は公式に第三の予言を公開したものの、その真偽については様々な説があり、 第三の予言の真相は今もって不明である とも言われている
