English Version
Tawarazaka, in Ueki-machi, Kita Ward, Kumamoto City, is known as a former battlefield of the Satsuma Rebellion, where thousands of people are said to have died.
Over the years, strange reports have continued to circulate around the area. Some visitors claim to have seen the spirits of soldiers. Others say they heard the sound of horse hooves coming through their car stereo.
Encounters are especially rumored around a phone booth and a nearby cemetery. Because this is a real historic site and there are graves in the area, visitors should be respectful, avoid entering restricted or private spaces, and use caution if driving at night.
Whether these stories are memories of war, local rumor, or something that has lingered across time, Tawarazaka remains one of Kumamoto’s more unsettling historic places.
