Ikobe Coast: Sea Turtle Beach, Haunted Rumors, and Dangerous Cliffs in Toyohashi

East Timor’s Dark History: Independence, Occupation, and Refugees
目次

English Version

Ikobe Coast in Toyohashi, Aichi, is known among some visitors for unsettling stories: voices heard from the forest, and sightings of a woman dressed in white. These are personal accounts and local rumors rather than confirmed events, but they have helped give the area an eerie reputation.

The coast is also famous as a nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles. Near the beach, however, there is a disused road that is no longer in service. The surrounding area has steep cliffs, and it is also known in local talk as a suicide spot.

Some people wonder whether the sea itself is connected to the coast’s ominous image. Ikobe Coast has had many water-related accidents, and swimming is prohibited in many areas.

If you visit, follow all posted signs, stay away from closed roads and cliff edges, and never enter restricted or unsafe areas.

Location: 287 Kofunagatani, Ikobe-cho, Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture.
