English Version

Yamamoto Tunnel is a rumored haunted spot in Kaminoyama City, Yamagata Prefecture, along Prefectural Route 104 in Tsuruhagi-machi.

According to local stories, hands are said to reach out from the tunnel walls. There have also been reported sightings of the spirit of a mother holding a child.

Some people connect these stories to the area around the tunnel, where there is said to be a crematorium nearby, as well as a Mizuko Jizo statue dedicated to the memorial care of unborn or lost children.

As with many tunnel legends in Japan, the details remain rumor rather than confirmed fact. If you visit, stay on public roads, watch for traffic, do not stop inside the tunnel, and respect any nearby memorial or restricted areas.
