English Version
Joan of Arc was a French hero who appeared in the later years of the Hundred Years’ War between England and France. She was a soldier, a devout Catholic, and a tragic heroine whose life ended in flames.
Today, many people still revere her, and the Catholic Church recognizes her as a saint. Yet Joan of Arc was active on the public stage of history for only about two years.
There are countless stories about her, but when we look at the surviving records, one question remains strangely difficult to answer: how did Joan of Arc become a national hero of France?
The Hundred Years’ War itself was also extremely complicated, shaped by dynastic claims, regional loyalties, economics, and civil conflict. Joan’s true character cannot be summed up in a single phrase. Here, we will look at the life of France’s national heroine, the Maid of Orléans, and the mysterious path that led to her tragic end.
Joan of Arc’s Childhood and the Voices
Joan of Arc’s exact date of birth is not known. Based on what she later said during her trial for heresy, she is generally believed to have been born around 1412.
She was born in the rural village of Domrémy in eastern France. Her father was named Jacques, and her mother was Isabelle Romée. Joan had four siblings, and she was either the youngest child or the eldest daughter, depending on the account.
Her family home is said to still stand in Domrémy today and has become a memorial museum. If you plan to visit, check current opening hours and local guidance in advance, as small historical sites may have limited access.
Joan’s father was a self-sufficient farmer, and the family is sometimes described as relatively well-off. From childhood, Joan attended church regularly and was known as a serious Catholic who never missed Mass.
According to Joan’s own testimony, around 1424, when she was about 12 years old, she began hearing a “voice.”
She later said she saw visions of the Archangel Michael and two martyr saints. The messages were repeated: “Save France,” “liberate Orléans,” and “lead the Dauphin to Reims for his coronation.”
Joan first heard the voices when she was around 12 or 13. Over time, she became convinced they were messages from God. By the time she was about 16, she decided to act on them.
Those commands would lead directly to two major turning points in the Hundred Years’ War: the liberation of Orléans and the coronation of the Dauphin Charles as King Charles VII.
A Brief Look at the Hundred Years’ War
To understand Joan of Arc, it is essential to understand the Hundred Years’ War, the long conflict between England and France.
A full explanation would take an entire article on its own, so here is the simple version: the war began from disputes over royal succession between England and France, combined with economic issues centered around Flanders and nearby regions.
When the French king died, the king of England, who had blood ties to the French royal line, began claiming the French throne. Naturally, the French nobility resisted.
Caught between the two powers was Flanders, which supported England for commercial reasons. Over time, powerful local figures across various regions began acting independently. Some areas sided with England, others with France, and the result was more than a century of upheaval.
France was also divided internally. Disputes over royal succession tore the country apart, and the Black Death added even more chaos. Joan of Arc appeared at a time when the people were exhausted by a war that had gone on far too long.
How Did Joan of Arc Meet Charles VII?
Returning to Joan’s story, she was a farmer’s daughter from Domrémy. She had no obvious political backing. Yet, claiming that she had heard the voice of God, she managed to meet Charles VII, who was then the Dauphin.
When Joan first met Charles, she was still an ordinary person who had never set foot on a battlefield.
As would later become clear during her trial, Joan of Arc also could not write. She lived in an era and situation where formal education was not easily available to someone of her background.
In modern terms, it would be like a Japanese girl during World War II suddenly asking to meet someone in the imperial line of succession because she had received a message from God. The difficulty of gaining such an audience is hard to overstate.
So how did she manage it?
From around the age of 16, Joan said the voices told her to go to Vaucouleurs, about 20 kilometers north of Domrémy, and meet the garrison commander stationed there. Vaucouleurs was a relatively urban area at the time, and some of Joan’s relatives on her mother’s side are said to have lived there.
This is where France’s complicated internal politics become important.
The Burgundians and the Armagnacs
At the time, France was divided by a struggle between two factions: the Burgundians and the Armagnacs.
The Burgundians were a group centered around nobles known as the Dukes of Burgundy, and they sought influence over French sovereignty. With support from England, they grew stronger.
Charles VII, whom Joan would eventually lead to Reims for his coronation, belonged to the Armagnac faction. The Armagnacs were originally also known as the Orléans faction and represented what was considered the legitimate royal bloodline.
The French kings of the Valois dynasty belonged to the Armagnac line. Charles VII inherited that bloodline and became the king tied to it.
The split between these factions deepened after the death of Charles V, the third king mentioned in this line of conflict. During the Hundred Years’ War, the two sides fought bitterly, including assassinations and retaliation.
The Lorraine region, which included Joan’s home village of Domrémy and her first destination of Vaucouleurs, was influenced by the powerful Burgundian side. However, the town of Vaucouleurs still had a strong Armagnac presence.
Joan of Arc and the Duke of Lorraine
Joan somehow reached Vaucouleurs and, following the voices, was able to meet the garrison commander. At first, however, she was turned away.
Even after her first arrival, the voices continued to urge her to act more quickly. Joan did not give up and is said to have spoken with the commander several times.
Around this time, a man named Charles, the Duke of Lorraine—not the same person as Charles VII—heard rumors of Joan’s miraculous nature and summoned her.
Joan went to meet him in Nancy. According to tradition, the Duke of Lorraine consulted her about a chronic illness.
Joan did not perform any special medical treatment. Instead, she reportedly advised him to “return to your good wife,” received a reward, and left.
This Duke of Lorraine was related to Yolande of Aragon, the mother-in-law of Charles VII. He is also said to have been the direct royal authority over the commander at Vaucouleurs.
One theory says that although the commander initially dismissed Joan, he changed his mind after the royal figure he served took an interest in her. He then permitted Joan to travel to Chinon, where Charles VII was staying.
About half a year had passed since Joan first arrived at Vaucouleurs. During that time, she must have done something that drew attention from nobles and members of the ruling class. Soon after meeting the Duke of Lorraine, she was allowed to go to Chinon.
Joan of Arc Meets Charles VII
At last, Joan received the chance to follow the voices and meet Charles VII.
By this time, English forces had already landed in northern France and would soon besiege Orléans. When Joan arrived in Chinon, the people around Charles were deeply cautious.
A mysterious girl from the countryside had appeared claiming to hear the voice of God. The nobles around Charles VII were divided between those who supported meeting her and those who opposed it. In an age when assassins were a real threat, their suspicion was understandable.
At this point, Yolande of Aragon, Charles VII’s mother-in-law mentioned above, was already favorable toward Joan. She held back the nobles and proposed a test.
This led to one of the most famous stories about Joan of Arc: the test in which she had to identify the real Charles VII in a crowd.
In a room filled with nobles, a false Charles VII sat on what looked like the throne. The real Charles stood among the crowd, watching Joan’s reaction.
If Joan truly heard the voice of God as she claimed, then she should be able to recognize the real Dauphin. The test was meant to provide visible proof.
It is no exaggeration to say that Joan’s actions at that moment were the first step in transforming a rural farmer’s daughter into a hero of France.
Joan immediately recognized that the man on the throne was a substitute. She reportedly told him, “You are a good man, but you are not the Dauphin.” Then she found Charles VII among the crowd and addressed him as the “noble Dauphin.”
Even after being discovered, Charles said, “I am not the Dauphin. He is the Dauphin.” But Joan answered, “By God, noble Dauphin, the king is no one but you.”
Because of this, Charles VII accepted Joan as genuine. The two are said to have spoken alone for a while afterward, but no record of that conversation survives.
Even then, however, debate continued among the nobles over whether Joan was truly legitimate.
There was an important reason for this. France and England were both deeply shaped by the legacy of Rome and the authority of Catholic Christianity. Without Catholic legitimacy, Charles VII’s decision to support Joan could have become politically fatal.
For that reason, Joan was taken to Poitiers. There, according to tradition, she underwent an examination to determine whether she was a heretic, including a virginity test. At the time, unmarried women who were not virgins could be unfairly suspected of having made a pact with the devil.
In addition, clergy questioned Joan carefully and examined the “voices” she claimed to hear.
During this process, Joan reportedly said, “I did not come to Poitiers to show a sign. At Orléans, I will prove the sign sent by God.”
With those words, she moved toward the historic liberation of Orléans.
Joan was still only about 17 years old when she stepped onto the public stage of history.
