Kii-dani Castle Tragedy: Kuroda Kanbei and the Legend of the Red Walls

Do you have a favorite warlord from Japan’s Sengoku period? For many history fans, one name that often comes up is Kuroda Kanbei, the brilliant strategist who supported Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later became widely known through historical dramas.

Kanbei is remembered as a genius tactician, but among the stories connected to him, one of the bloodiest is the tragedy involving Utsunomiya Shigefusa and Kii-dani Castle.

The Tragedy at Kii-dani Castle

Utsunomiya Shigefusa ruled the Kii-dani area, located in what is now Samuta, Chikujo Town, Chikujo District, Fukuoka Prefecture. Kii-dani was known as a natural fortress: a deep valley that was difficult to attack and even harder to conquer. The Utsunomiya family had reportedly governed this land for generations, said to be around 400 years.

Then Toyotomi Hideyoshi rose to power.

Hideyoshi approached Utsunomiya Shigefusa with an offer that amounted to: “Serve under me, and your territory will be guaranteed.” The people negotiating this on Hideyoshi’s behalf were Kuroda Kanbei and his heir, Kuroda Nagamasa.

Shigefusa agreed under the condition that his lands would be protected. But when the matter was settled, the result was very different from what he expected. For reasons that remain debated, Hideyoshi assigned Shigefusa’s territory, including Kii-dani Castle, to the Kuroda family. The Utsunomiya family was given different land instead: a forced relocation, or kunigae.

Shigefusa was furious. He refused to surrender his castle and territory, and he resisted fiercely together with local residents. Considering how long the Utsunomiya family had been rooted in the region, that resistance is understandable.

But his opponent was Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the most powerful man in Japan. And the family trying to bring him under control was the Kuroda clan. No matter how strong the resistance, the odds were overwhelming.

The Kuroda side then proposed another solution: what if the Utsunomiya family became retainers of the Kuroda clan? In theory, this would allow them to remain connected to their ancestral land without openly defying Hideyoshi.

Utsunomiya Shigefusa accepted and became a retainer of the Kuroda family.

If the story had ended there, it might have been remembered as a political compromise. But it did not end there.

The Red Walls of Goganji Temple

Although peace seemed to have been made, Kuroda Kanbei was reportedly planning his next move.

Kanbei was close to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and according to one theory, Hideyoshi could not forgive Utsunomiya Shigefusa for resisting him. It is said, though accounts vary, that Hideyoshi ordered the Kuroda family to deal with the Utsunomiya clan.

What followed is often described as one of the darkest episodes associated with Kuroda Kanbei.

After becoming a Kuroda retainer, Shigefusa is said to have served Nagamasa faithfully, even though Nagamasa was younger and less experienced. Kanbei may have recognized Shigefusa as a talented warrior; after all, Nagamasa had already been defeated by him during the fighting over Kii-dani.

But the strategy Kanbei chose was a deception.

One day, Kuroda Nagamasa invited Utsunomiya Shigefusa to Nakatsu Castle, saying they should share drinks together. Shigefusa came in the proper manner of a retainer paying respect to his lord.

However, Nagamasa did not allow most of Shigefusa’s retainers to enter the castle. Instead, they were made to wait at Goganji Temple in the castle town.

Inside the castle, only Shigefusa and a small number of attendants joined the banquet. There, the Kuroda side suddenly attacked and killed him.

At almost the same time, Goganji Temple was also struck by a surprise attack. Shigefusa’s retainers and family members who had been waiting there were reportedly slaughtered. His eldest son, Tomofusa, who had been sent to suppress an uprising under Nagamasa’s orders, was also killed. Tsuruhime, who had been serving the Kuroda family as a hostage, and her attendants were killed as well.

Goganji Temple, the site connected to this tragedy, is known for its red walls.

According to the legend, when the Utsunomiya retainers were killed at the temple, their blood splashed across the walls. No matter how many times the stains were wiped away, they would not disappear. The walls were repainted white, but the color of blood was said to seep back through from underneath.

In the end, the temple walls were painted red.

Goganji Temple still exists today, and its red walls are still known to visitors. Whether the red color is simply paint, or whether the legend preserves the memory of bloodshed that could never be erased, cannot be proven.

Afterward, misfortunes such as sudden deaths and internal family troubles were said to have struck the Kuroda family. Some people whispered that these events were the curse of Utsunomiya Shigefusa.

If a family and its retainers were wiped out through betrayal, it is not hard to imagine why such a grudge would be feared.

The Legend That Still Remains

The story of the red walls, where bloodstains supposedly rose through the paint no matter how often they were covered, is a chilling reminder of how powerful resentment can become in local folklore.

As of 2019, it had been 431 years since Utsunomiya Shigefusa was killed, yet the legend of the red walls continues to be told.

Kuroda Kanbei remains one of the most famous strategists of the Sengoku period. Many history fans admire him as a brilliant military mind. At the same time, the role of a strategist in that era could be cold and ruthless. Deception, surprise attacks, and schemes to make enemies defect were part of the world of warfare.

To be skilled in strategy often meant knowing how to defeat an enemy as efficiently as possible on the battlefield.

That may be why the tragedy of Kii-dani and the red walls of Goganji Temple feel so unsettling: they reveal the shadow behind the image of a celebrated genius.

。黒田官兵衛のエピソードの中で 最も血生臭いと言われているのが城井谷城を巡る宇都宮鎮房との一件 です。宇都宮鎮房は今の福岡県築上郡築上町寒田にある城井谷という場所を収めていた人物でした。この城井谷は、天然の要害といわれる深い谷になっていて、攻め落とすのが難しいと言われていた場所でした。そして、宇都宮家はこの場所を先祖代々、ずっと納めていたという訳です。そんなときに、力をつけたのが時代の 天下人の豊臣秀吉 でした。。。画像引用元： 豊臣秀吉 。

豊臣秀吉は城井谷城の宇都宮鎮房に「 領地は保証するから部下になれ 」という趣旨の話しを持ちかけます。その話しを使者として持ちかけて交渉していたのが、黒田官兵衛と嫡男の黒田長政でした。宇都宮鎮房は 「領土を保証する」という条件で合意 するわけですが、実際に蓋を開けてみると話が違う！。。どういうわけか、豊臣秀吉は城井谷城を含む宇都宮鎮房の領地をあろうことか家の領地にしてしまったのです。そして、宇都宮家には別の領地を用意しました。いわゆる国替えというやつです。

これに宇都宮鎮房は激怒し、領地と城を明け渡すことを拒み続け、地元の住民と共に激しく抵抗します。宇都宮家は400年もの間この地を納めていたそうですから、抵抗するのも無理のないことです。。。ですが、相手は天下人となった豊臣秀吉…そして、宇都宮家を説得をしているのはあの黒田家…どんなに抵抗したところで到底叶う相手ではありません。このまま、逆らい続けると宇都宮家の存亡に関わると考えた黒田家は「 では、自分の部下になるのはどうか 」と宇都宮家に話しを持ちかけます。

そうすれば、先祖代々の土地を離れずに済み、豊臣秀吉に逆らわない方法として提案したわけです。宇都宮鎮房はこの話に乗り、黒田家の家臣となります。ここまでで終わっていれば、それでよかったのですが、 この話はこれで終わりません。。血の色に染まった?!消えない赤い壁のお寺。こうしていったんは和睦したかに見えた宇都宮家と黒田家ですが、実は 黒田官兵衛はこの後の策を練っていた のです。。黒田官兵衛は、豊臣秀吉の側近だったのですがある説によると豊臣秀吉は自分に逆らった宇都宮鎮房を許すことができなかったそうです。

そうなると、宇都宮家を召し抱えている黒田家に宇都宮の処遇を命じたとも言われています(諸説あります)。その命を受けてか、 黒田官兵衛は実にらしくない策略を持ちかけて宇都宮鎮房を罠にかける のです。悲劇の城井谷城！黒田官兵衛の汚点とも呼ばれる残酷なエピソード。。黒田家の家臣となった宇都宮鎮房は、 自分より若く経験がない黒田官兵衛の息子の長政にも忠義を尽くして仕えていた と言われています。黒田官兵衛がここまでして宇都宮鎮房を守ろうとしたわけですから、きっと才能ある素晴らしい武将として評価していたんでしょう。

実際に、この城井谷をめぐる攻防で黒田長政は宇都宮鎮房に負けていますしね。。と、そんな宇都宮氏を討つために、黒田官兵衛が練った策は 「騙し打ち」 でした。あるとき、黒田長政は宇都宮鎮房を中津城に招いて 「酒を酌み交わそう」 と誘いだします。宇都宮鎮房は家臣としての礼儀を持って長政に接したそうです。ですが、この時、長政は家臣のほとんどを城に入れず城下にあった合元寺で待機させます。。城で宴に参加したのは、宇都宮鎮房とわずかな供人だけ…そこで黒田家は宇都宮鎮房をいきなり切ったのです。

そして、それとほぼ同時に城下の合元寺にも奇襲をかけて宇都宮氏の家臣や一族を皆殺しにしました。そして、黒田長政の命で一揆を鎮めに行っていた宇都宮鎮房をの嫡男朝房も惨殺…更には、人質として黒田家に仕えていた鶴姫と侍女も皆殺しにしてしまいました。。この悲劇の舞台となった 合元寺の壁は実は赤く塗られています。。それはどうしてか…合元寺に止め置かれた宇都宮家の家臣たちは合元寺で殺害されます。その時に寺の壁に血しぶきが飛んで真っ赤になっていたと・・・。

その血は、いくら拭いても拭いてもとれなかったそう。そして、それならばと塗りおなしたわけですが、白く塗ってもしたから血の色が浮いて来てしまったんです。それで、とうとうこのお寺では壁を赤く塗ったんです。。。今も合元寺は実在していて、赤い壁もあるそう…この壁の赤はすべて塗料なのか、それともしたから浮き出てきた宇都宮家の家臣達の血しぶきなのか…確かめるすべはありません。この後、黒田家には急死や家騒動といった不幸が続いたといいます。そし て「これは鎮房の祟りではないのか」 と言われていたそうです。

騙し討ちで皆殺しにされたら…恨みたくもなりますよね。。城井谷の悲劇、赤い壁のまとめ。塗りなおしても血しぶきの跡が浮かび上がってくるという赤い壁…人の恨みというのは怖いものです。。宇都宮鎮房が討たれてから2019年で431年になりますが、この赤い壁の伝説は今もなお語り継がれています。天才軍師の闇。黒田官兵衛と言えば、戦国時代においては比類する人物を探すのが難しいくらいの有名な軍師の1人です。他の時代でも天才と呼ばれた軍師は多く現在に語り継がれていますが、 軍師とは冷酷非情でなければ務まらない職務 でもあったと言えるでしょう。

特に戦国時代においては「 だまし討ち 」や「 寝返り工作 」などは当たり前の世界だったのです。軍略に長けているということは、 戦場において如何に効率よく敵兵を殺すか 、に長けているということです。とは言え、黒田官兵衛が好きな戦国時代ファンの方は非常に多いですね。こちらの本は非常に分かりやすくまとめられているので、黒田官兵衛の研究入門にはおすすめの一冊です
