Yubetsu Coal Mine Hospital Ruins: Hokkaido’s Abandoned Mining-Town Haunt

COVID-19 in Japan: Is the Vaccine the Key to Getting Normal Life Back?
目次

English Version

At the ruins of the former Yubetsu Coal Mine Hospital in Akan-cho, Kushiro, visitors and urban legend fans often mention a strange detail: the operating room and morgue, which should have existed in a hospital of this kind, are said to be impossible to find.

There is also a rumor that if someone takes an object from the hospital ruins as a souvenir, they will later receive a phone call demanding that it be returned.

The surrounding coal mine once suffered a large-scale gas explosion that caused many deaths and injuries. As the coal industry declined with the times, it is easy to imagine that the town itself—including the hospital—also faded away.

Some say the lingering hardship of the miners and residents, along with their regrets and grief, remains in this place as paranormal phenomena.

Location: Yubetsu 22-sen, Akan-cho, Kushiro, Hokkaido.

If you visit the area, be aware that abandoned ruins can be structurally dangerous and may be private property or off-limits. Do not enter restricted areas, obey posted signs, and view the site only from safe, legal locations.
