Near Lake Utonai in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, several abandoned love hotels once stood close together. Among them, the abandoned Hotel Emperor has long been known locally as a haunted spot.
These love hotels were located around the Utonai green area near Lake Utonai. Some of the older properties are said to have opened around 1970, but by the 2000s, they had all gone out of business.
There were two main hotels: Hotel Emperor and Hotel Royal. Their names sounded grand, but both eventually became ruins. Hotel Royal was demolished in 2018. There also seems to have been a cottage-style hotel nearby, but that too was apparently demolished long ago.
Because of that, when people today talk about the abandoned love hotel in Tomakomai, they usually mean Hotel Emperor. It is not only known as a ruin, but also as a local haunted spot.
Locals have told stories of seeing the spirits of a man, a child, and a woman there. A child’s ghost appearing at a love hotel is a strange detail, to say the least.
As a side note, the name Lake Utonai comes from the Ainu language and is said to mean “backbone and ribs.” That gives the area a slightly eerie feeling before the ghost stories even begin.
A Ruin Too Dangerous to Enter
Hotel Emperor was once a well-known haunted spot in Tomakomai, but today the building has deteriorated so badly that it can barely function as a ghost-hunting destination anymore.
These days, it seems to attract more abandoned-ruin enthusiasts than people looking for paranormal activity. Barricades have been set up, and the structure appears extremely dangerous. Entering the site is not recommended.
If you are curious, it is much safer to look up videos online, view the exterior only from a safe and legal public area, or check it out through Street View. Even from that, you can see how badly the abandoned love hotel has collapsed. One of the buildings has reportedly been crushed almost completely flat.
Driving along the road, the first thing you notice is a broken, weathered sign. Following the sign through overgrown grass and trees, you eventually come across a fairy-tale-like gate with a medieval feel, along with a concrete pillar that says, “Please drive quietly.” Hotel Emperor sits farther beyond that point.
The hotel once had rooms with lavish names such as the “Special Room: Emperor’s Room,” “Baron’s Room,” “Prince’s Room,” and “Viscount’s Room.” Since it was a love hotel, the rooms were designed to be dim, with little to no outside light coming in. That darkness may have helped fuel the ghost rumors.
Now, however, holes have opened in some of the walls, letting daylight shine in from outside.
Other Abandoned Love Hotels in Tomakomai
Tomakomai also has another abandoned love hotel area along the coast in the Tarumae district. This one is said to be even more ruined than Hotel Emperor, to the point that it looks as if it might collapse if a strong wind blew through.
There are aerial videos of that site online as well, so fans of abandoned places may want to view it that way rather than attempting to visit unsafe ruins in person.
Tomakomai has several other places connected to local ghost stories and occult rumors, including Takaoka Cemetery, which is associated with the so-called curse of the Six Jizo and a doll; Kuchinashi-numa; and the Yufutsu War Dead Grave.
For travelers and horror fans, Hotel Emperor remains one of Tomakomai’s most memorable ruins—but it is best experienced from a safe distance.

北海道の苫小牧市、ウトナイ湖の近くに、 複数のラブホテル廃墟 が立ち並んでいます。その中の 廃ラブホテル「ホテル・エンペラー」は、心霊スポットとして地元の間では昔から有名です 。今回は北海道の心霊スポット、 「ホテル・エンペラー」 や、 他の廃ラブホテル について紹介したいと思います。廃ラブホテル「ホテル・エンペラー」は苫小牧市の心霊スポット。。北海道苫小牧市のウトナイ湖近くのウトナイ緑地に、いくつかの ラブホテル がありました。古いものは 1970年ころ に開業したものの、 2000年代 にはすべて 廃業 してしまいます。
1つが「ホテル・エンペラー」、もう1つが「ホテル・ローヤル」です 。どちらも名前はゴージャスなのですが、今やどちらもすっかり 廃墟 に。「ホテル・ローヤル」に限っては、2018年に 解体 されました 。この2つ以外に、 コテージタイプのホテル もあったようですが、こちらもとうに解体されてしまったようです。ですから現在、 苫小牧市の廃ラブホテル といえば 「ホテル・エンペラー」 を指します。この廃ラブホテルは廃墟というだけでなく、 心霊スポット としても有名です。
地元では、 男性の霊 、 子どもの霊 、 女性の霊 が出るなどの心霊体験が語られています。ラブホテルに子どもの霊が出るというのも、奇妙な話ですが……。。ちなみにウトナイ湖という名前は アイヌ語 で、 「背骨とあばら骨」 という意味になります。ちょっと不気味ですよね。苫小牧市の「ホテル・エンペラー」は倒壊寸前の廃墟。。廃ラブホテル 「 ホテル・エンペラー」は苫小牧市では昔から有名な 心霊スポット でしたが、はっきりいって、現在は 心霊スポットとして機能していないほどに崩壊が進んでいます 。
ですから今では、 廃墟マニア が訪れることの方が多いようですね。バリケード も設置されていますし、かなり 危険 だと思われますので、 中に入ることはオススメできません 。YouTube などで調べるといくつか動画が挙がっていますので、そちらか外観を見るだけか、もしくは ストリートビュー などで楽しむことを勧めます。それでも十分、この廃ラブホテルの崩落っぷりはわかるはずです。棟の1つに関しては、 完全にぐしゃりと潰れているほど ですから。
まず通りを走ると、 壊れかけた看板 が目に入ります。看板にしたがって草やぶや樹林を抜けると、 メルヘンチックな中世を思わせる門 や、「静かに走って下さい」という文字が書かれたコンクリート柱が現れます。廃ラブホテル 「 ホテル・エンペラー」は、その奥に居を構えています。。ホテルには「特別室エンペラーの間」、「男爵の間」、「プリンスの間」、「子爵の間」など、これまた ゴージャスな名 を冠された部屋がありました。ラブホテルですから、当然 部屋はすべて外光が入らないように薄暗くなる作りになっていた のですが（これがまた不気味で霊情報を呼んだのかもしれません）、今では壁にもいくつか穴が開いており、 外から光が差し込んでくる始末 です。
ちなみに苫小牧市には、 樽前地区の海沿 いにも 廃ラブホテル があります。こちらはもう 今にも風が吹いたら崩れてしまうんじゃないかと思えるほど、「ホテル・エンペラー」以上に崩壊が進んでいます 。こちらもYouTubeには 空撮動画 などが挙がっていますので、廃墟好きの方は一度見てみることをオススメします。今回は北海道の心霊スポット、 「ホテル・エンペラー」 や、 他の廃ラブホテル について紹介しました。苫小牧市には他にもいくつかの心霊スポットがあります。
