Strange things falling from the sky—frogs, fish, stones, money, and even chunks of ice—are often grouped under the eerie term “Fafrotskies,” said to come from “fall from the skies.” In Japanese, this kind of mysterious rain is sometimes called “kaiu,” or “strange rain.” Reports of these bizarre falls appear across countries, cultures, and historical periods.
So what exactly are Fafrotskies, and why do they keep appearing in strange stories around the world?
The History of Fafrotskies
Surprisingly, one of the oldest well-documented records of this phenomenon appears in a Japanese historical text, the Sandai Jitsuroku, an official history compiled during the Heian period.
According to the record, in the year 884, a thunderstorm struck Akita Castle in Dewa Province. During the storm, a large number of stone arrowheads—23, according to the account—fell from the sky.
At the time, these objects were regarded as creations of heaven. Later, during the Edo period, the famous scholar Arai Hakuseki suggested that they were actually man-made objects.
There may be older examples, but this is considered one of the earliest cases preserved in a formal written record.
What Falls From the Sky?
The things reported in Fafrotskies cases are surprisingly varied.
The best-known examples are aquatic creatures such as fish and frogs, and Japan has had its share of similar sightings. But the list does not stop there.
Reported cases include an alligator said to have fallen in the United States in 1893, beetle larvae in France in 1858, and mustard seeds, kidney beans, corn, and soybeans in the United Kingdom in 1979.
And it is not only living things.
Other reports include fragments of copper in the United States in 1953, $7,000 in bills in the United States in 1995, a large amount of ten-pound notes in the United Kingdom in 1955, a piece of ice said to be as large as an elephant in 19th-century India, and a basketball-sized block of ice in the United States in 1976.
At a certain point, it begins to feel as if there is almost nothing that has not supposedly fallen from the sky.
Why Do Fafrotskies Happen?
There are several theories that try to explain these strange falling-object events. Some are practical. Others are much more speculative.
The Tornado Theory
The most commonly cited explanation is that tornadoes or waterspouts pick up animals or objects, carry them high into the air, and drop them far away.
In fact, some Fafrotskies cases are generally believed to be explainable this way. Fish and frogs, especially, could be lifted from ponds, rivers, or wetlands and then fall elsewhere during unusual weather.
The Bird Theory
Another possible explanation involves birds.
Large flocks of migratory birds may carry food or other materials and drop them all at once. In smaller cases, a single strange object could be leftover food, nesting material, or something dropped in flight.
It may not explain every story, but for some reports, it is at least plausible.
Mistaken Impressions
Sometimes, the mystery may come from how the scene is interpreted.
For example, after heavy rain, streets and paths become wet. In mountain areas or rural places, frogs may suddenly appear in large numbers after rainfall. To someone unfamiliar with the area, it might look as if the frogs had just fallen from the sky.
In that sense, some “rains of animals” may be dramatic misunderstandings rather than paranormal events.
The Teleportation Theory
Then there is the stranger idea: teleportation.
According to this theory, objects from distant places are somehow instantly transported into the sky and then dropped. Of course, this is an extremely far-fetched idea, and there is no proof that such a mechanism exists.
The reason people bring it up at all is that some cases are difficult to explain by ordinary weather alone. Fafrotskies have been reported in areas where tornadoes are not common, and objects such as iron masses, money, or large ice blocks can be harder to fit into a simple natural explanation. In some accounts, official sources reportedly determined that certain ice falls were not ordinary hail.
Even the idea that a natural force could selectively carry only one kind of object can feel almost as strange as the supernatural explanation.
That is why Fafrotskies remain one of those modern mysteries that feel almost mythological.
Could It Happen Near You?
In 2009, Japan saw a wave of reports involving large numbers of tadpoles apparently falling from the sky. The reports began most noticeably in Ishikawa Prefecture and were also observed in places including Hiroshima, Saitama, Shizuoka, Nagano, Aichi, Iwate, Fukui, and Akita.
The incidents attracted major attention at the time, and no single explanation satisfied everyone.
Maybe the next strange thing to fall from the sky will land right in front of your home.

空から異物が降ってくるファフロッキーズ、その奇妙な実態に迫ります。ファフロッキーズの歴史。。意外にもファフロッキーズを伝える最古の文献は日本の歴史書『 三代実録 』。これは、平安時代に編纂された公式な歴史書で、それによれば884年に出羽国秋田城において雷雨が発生、その際に 天から大量の石の矢じり （記録では23）が降ってきたとされています。当時は、天の創造物とされていましたが江戸時代、かの有名な新井白石により人工物であると推定されています。
※それ以前にも例はあるが、きちんとした文献に記録されているものの最古はこれになります。。ファフロッキーズの種類。。ファフロッキーズで降ってくるもの、それはかなり多種多様。有名なものは魚、そしてカエルなどと言った水棲の生物で、これは日本でもよく目撃例が存在します。しかし、中にはワニが一頭落ちてきた（1893年アメリカ）カブトムシの幼虫が落ちてきた（1858年フランス）からし菜の種、いんげん豆、とうもろこし、大豆が降ってきた（1979年イギリス）など生物も多様。
。しかし、降ってくるものは生物だけではありません。。銅の破片（1953年アメリカ）7000ドルの紙幣（1995年アメリカ）大量の10ポンド紙幣（1955年イギリス）象ほどの大きさの氷（19世紀インド）バスケットボール大の氷塊（1976年アメリカ）。など、もはや 降ってこないものはないというレベル で降ってきているのです。なぜファフロッキーズが起きるのか。。奇妙な落下現象ファフロッキーズ。その原因に迫っていきましょう。。竜巻説。。最も有力だと言われているのがこの、竜巻説。
竜巻によって上空高くに巻き上げられた生物や物体が、遠く離れた土地まで飛翔し落下するというもので、 事実ファフロッキーズのいくつかはこれで間違いない とされています。鳥類が運んだ説。。これも一つはありえる説です。大量に飛来する渡り鳥などが一斉に何かを運んで落とすという生態があってもおかしくはないですし、 単独のものなら食べ残しや巣の材料 とも言えます。見間違え説。。例えば大量の雨が降った時、路上が濡れますよね。そうなれば、大量発生したカエルなどが一斉に地面へと飛び出してくるということは、これは山間部であればよくある話ではあります。
これを、その地域の人間でない人が見れば「 落ちてきたの？」と思っても不思議ではありません。テレポート説。。遠くのものが瞬間移動して上空に運ばれ、そして落ちてくる。このテレポート説はたしかに荒唐無稽な説になりますし、もちろんのこと、この説の証拠が存在したり、その存在が証明されているわけではありません。これはつまり「 そうでも言わないと説明できないことが多すぎる 」ということなんですね。というのも、このファフロッキーズは、竜巻の起きない地域でも発生していますし、鉄の塊やお金、氷塊（ これは公機関によって雹ではないと判明している ）などは自然現象では説明がつきません。
しかも、1種類だけが限定で自然現象によって運ばれるなどは、むしろそちらのほうがオカルト。まさに現代に残る、神話的な不思議現象なのです。。あなたも出会えるかもしれない。。ちなみに、 2009年には日本の各県で空から大量のおたまじゃくしが降ってくる現象が観測 されています。最も多い石川を皮切りに、広島、埼玉、静岡、長野、愛知、岩手、福井、秋田で観測されたこの減少は大きな話題を呼びました。次に不思議なものが降ってくるのは、あなたの家の前かもしれないですよ。
