This is a roundup of articles in our series on World War II, known in wartime Japan as the Greater East Asia War. These stories focus on subjects that are not always covered in school textbooks: wartime ideology, occupied territories, espionage, postwar policies, and disturbing incidents from the final years of the war.
Palau, Japan, and the Meaning of Its Flag
One article looks at the claim that the Greater East Asia War was not simply a war of invasion, using Palau as an example.
Palau was once under Japanese administration. Because of that history, some might assume Palau would have negative feelings toward Japan. However, Palau is often described as a pro-Japan country. The article explores why Palau has a favorable view of Japan and introduces one theory about the meaning of the Palauan flag.
The Alleged SSS Policy After Japan’s Defeat
Another article introduces the so-called SSS policy, described as a frightening postwar policy aimed at defeated Japan.
According to this theory, the policy encouraged entertainment and distraction so that ordinary people would lose interest in politics. It is said to have worked by lowering public awareness and weakening Japan and the Japanese people. The article asks whether there is any way to break free from such a policy of making the public passive and uninformed.
Wartime Anecdotes and Richard Sorge, the Legendary Spy
The series also covers Richard Sorge, the legendary Soviet spy who operated in Japan during World War II.
Sorge carried out intelligence work in Japan, was eventually arrested, and was later executed. The articles look at his activities as a spy and ask which country truly benefited most from the war.
Richard Sorge and the Japanese Woman He Loved
Another article focuses on the personal side of the Sorge Incident.
Richard Sorge, the Soviet spy active in wartime Japan, reportedly sent information to the Soviet Union that Japan would not advance north. He was arrested and later executed. The article also tells the story of a Japanese woman he loved.
A Russian Wife Who Supported a Japanese Man After the War
The series also includes a story from postwar Russia.
After the Greater East Asia War ended, one Japanese man was sent to Siberia despite being innocent, according to the article, and could not return to Japan. Although he managed to survive, he remained unable to go home for a long time.
This is the story of Claudia, the Russian wife who devoted herself to supporting him, and the wife in Japan who continued waiting for her husband’s return.
Human Experimentation at Kyushu Imperial University
The darker side of the series turns to the Kyushu University vivisection incident.
In 1945, near the end of the war, human experiments were carried out at the medical faculty of Kyushu Imperial University, now Kyushu University. The article asks what kinds of horrific experiments were performed on prisoners of war.
It is said that anesthesia was used, but young American prisoners were still subjected to vivisection and killed.
Artificial Blood, Seawater Injections, and the Question of Cannibalism
Another article examines claims connected to the same Kyushu University vivisection incident, including whether experiments involving artificial blood were performed.
The incident reportedly involved procedures such as removing a lung from a living prisoner and injecting diluted seawater into blood vessels. Eight prisoners of war died.
After the war, those involved were arrested as war criminals and interrogated. During GHQ investigations and the subsequent trial, an outrageous allegation emerged: cannibalism. The article asks whether the stories about eating human flesh were true.
