Old Matsuo Tunnel: A Haunted Road Legend in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi

Kamiyugi Park in Hachioji: Ghost Stories from a Dark Tama New Town Park

English Version

Old Matsuo Tunnel is a reportedly haunted spot on Prefectural Route 111 in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

According to local rumors, if you sound your horn inside the tunnel and then turn off the engine, the car may not start again. Other stories describe strange experiences while passing through, including sightings of a woman’s spirit reflected in the rearview mirror.

The reason behind these alleged hauntings is unclear, and many details remain uncertain. As with many tunnel legends in Japan, the stories are best treated as local folklore rather than confirmed fact.

If you visit the area, do not stop inside the tunnel, block traffic, or attempt risky behavior such as turning off your engine. Drive safely, follow posted signs, and respect local residents and road users.
