Ghostly Rumors Along the Tsunami-Hit Hamakaido Road in Sendai

Japan’s Dangerous Active Faults: 31 Areas at High Risk of Inland Earthquakes
目次

English Version

Along this stretch of road, people have reported unsettling phenomena in an area where almost no one lives anymore. According to local rumors, figures suddenly run out into the road as if fleeing from something, or appear to chase after passing cars.

As many may guess, this is a prefectural road that was swallowed by the tsunami. Many of the stories are said to have begun after the disaster.

At night, there are still few streetlights, and even now not many people drive through after dark. Residents have largely been unable to return, or have chosen not to return. Reconstruction continues, but this is a place that will never look the way it once did.

The area is around Fujitsuka Numata 38, Wakabayashi Ward, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. If you visit, stay on public roads, respect restricted or residential areas, and avoid unsafe nighttime driving.
