According to a September 26, 2019 report by Niigata Nippo More, a stone statue of Shichimen Daimyojin was stolen from a cave managed by Kakudayama Myokoji Temple in Nishikan Ward, Niigata City. The temple filed a damage report, and the Nishikan Police Station of Niigata Prefectural Police investigated the case as theft.
The missing statue was about 40 centimeters tall and 20 centimeters wide. The cave, known locally as Iwaya, is about 300 meters from the temple. Visits by the temple were reportedly limited to monthly sutra chanting and cleaning offerings once every week to ten days. When the temple visited for sutra chanting on August 19, nothing seemed unusual. A few days later, however, a nearby resident reported that the statue had disappeared.
The Disturbed Cave
Inside the cave, things appeared to have been disturbed. Candle stands had been moved, and piles of stones had collapsed.
This cave is tied to a legend of Nichiren, the Buddhist priest who was exiled to Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture. According to local tradition, when Nichiren was made to stop at Kakudahama on his way to Sado, local people asked him to subdue a giant serpent with seven heads that had taken up residence in the cave.
Nichiren is said to have preached the Lotus Sutra to the serpent, subdued it, and led it to repentance. In more recent years, the cave has become known through various media as one of Niigata’s haunted spots.
Young people have reportedly visited late at night for ghost-spot trips, while others have come from both inside and outside Niigata Prefecture to pay their respects regardless of the hour. At the time, entry to the cave was said not to be especially restricted. Even so, travelers should treat the site as a religious place, follow any current signs or temple instructions, avoid disturbing offerings or stones, and visit safely during daylight if access is permitted.
The site is commonly referred to as Shichimen Daitennyo Iwaya, or simply Iwaya, in Kakudahama, Nishikan Ward, Niigata City. Nearby are other well-known Niigata haunted spots, including Kakudamisaki Lighthouse and the so-called White House, though those are separate stories. This whole area may be one of Niigata’s better-known clusters of ghost-story locations.
The Path Behind Myokoji Temple
Kakudayama Myokoji Temple, which manages the cave, has a large temple precinct. There is an impressive torii gate, and koi swim calmly in the pond on the grounds. The haunted cave lies behind the temple. Following the map on the information board, it takes about five minutes to walk there.
The nearby beach is peaceful enough that people camp there, giving the area a surprisingly quiet atmosphere. On the way to the cave, a fallen tree lies across part of the route, and red banner-like markers stand like guideposts. In front of the cave, the ground opens up, and a large rock wall has a gaping mouth-like entrance.
To the left of the entrance is a sign explaining the legend. In English, its meaning is roughly:
“This rock cave is a sacred site where Saint Nichiren, on his way to exile on Sado, landed at Kakudahama and taught the seven-faced great serpent that lived in this cave. Afterward, the serpent made a vow to protect the age of the Latter Dharma and came to be enshrined as Shichimen Daimyojin. The stones inside are said to mysteriously pile up by themselves at night, and the place is called Sai no Kawara.”
The sign was dated August 1977 and attributed to Kakudayama Myokoji Temple.
It is unclear whether it is still there today, but below the sign there was once a small ceramic monk doll. To the left stands a statue of Saint Nichiren. Inside the cave, moss grows and the air feels cool. Stones are piled everywhere.
According to local talk, the stones stack themselves every night, and anyone who knocks them down may be cursed. The ground is damp and mossy, so visitors should be careful not to slip or disturb the stone piles.
On the right side, for some reason, there is an old well. Looking inside, it appears to be dry. Deeper in the cave, Kannon Bodhisattva is enshrined, with fresh flowers and thousand-crane offerings placed for safe childbirth prayers and memorial rites for unborn or lost children.
Opposite that is a Jizo statue wearing a red hood. Beneath it are countless dolls, said to be connected both to memorial prayers for children and to doll memorial rites.
Farther inside, there is another small shrine, though its details are unclear. Perhaps it is connected to the seven-headed serpent that kept its vow to Nichiren and became Shichimen Daimyojin. As with any sacred or rumored haunted site, visitors should be respectful, avoid touching offerings or religious objects, and never enter if the area is closed or unsafe.

心霊スポットの岩屋の中は荒らされており、ろうそく立ての位置がズラされたり、石積みが崩れたりしていました。この岩屋は新潟県に流罪となった日蓮の伝説が今なお生きている場所です。。日蓮が新潟県佐渡ヶ島へ渡る途中に角田浜に立ち寄らされたとき、地元の人々から岩屋に棲みついた「七つの頭を持つ大蛇」を退治してほしいと依頼されました。日蓮は大蛇に法華経の教えを説き、調伏し改心させたとされています。最近では様々なメディアを通じ、新潟県の岩屋は心霊スポットとして情報が広まりました。
若者が夜中に心霊スポット参りに来たり、時間を問わず新潟県の内外からお参りに訪れたりする人もいます。岩屋への出入りは、とくに制限していなかったといいます。新潟県心霊スポット新潟市西蒲区角田浜「七面大天女岩屋(しちめんだいてんにょいわや)」。新潟県の心霊スポット新潟市西蒲区角田浜の七面大天女岩屋、通称岩屋の近くには、別の新潟県屈指の心霊スポット、「角田岬灯台」や「ホワイトハウス」がありますが、紙幅の都合で過今回は割愛します。ここら辺り一帯が、新潟県の心霊スポットのメッカなのでしょうか。
岩屋を管理する角田山妙光寺は大変広い敷地を有しています。立派な鳥居があり、境内の池には悠然と鯉が泳いでいます。心霊スポットの岩屋は寺の裏にあります。案内版の地図の通り歩くと5分ほどで着きます。浜ではキャンプをしている人もいる、ずいぶんのどかな所です。心霊スポットへ行く道中には倒木が一本横たわり、交通安全協会のような赤いのぼりが道標のように立てられています。岩屋の前は広がっていて、大きな岩壁にパックリ口が開いています。入口左手には看板があり、次のような説明書きがされています。
「岩穴」 。本文「日蓮聖人が佐渡へ流罪の。途中 角田浜に御上陸この。岩穴に住んでいた七面大蛇を。教化された。大蛇はその後末法鎮守の。誓願をたて七面大明神と。詞られた霊蹟である。中の石は夜ひとりで積れる。不思議があり賽の河原。と呼んでいる。」。「昭和五十二年八月 角田山 妙光寺」。今もあるのか知りませんが、看板の下には陶器の小坊主の人形がいます。左手には日蓮聖人の像があります。洞窟の中はコケが生えて空気がヒンヤリしています。穴の中は、いたるところに石が詰まれています。
話によると、毎夜石が勝手に積まれていき、その石を崩すと祟られるといいます。湿ってコケの生えた地面なので、石を崩さないよう気を付けなければなりません。右手には、なぜか古びた井戸があり、中を覗き込むと枯れているようです。奥には観音菩薩が祀られ、安産祈願や水子供養のための、まだ枯れていない生花や千羽鶴が供えられています。その反対には赤い頭巾を被ったお地蔵さんもいます。地蔵の下には無数の人形たちがいます。これは水子供養と人形の供養も兼ねているそうです。
