In Chuo Ward, Niigata City, near the foot of Ryuto Ohashi Bridge, stands Daienji, a Shingon Buzan sect temple often named among Niigata Prefecture’s better-known haunted spots.

The temple’s former head priest was Kankai Shonin. Although Japan had already entered the modern era, Kankai Shonin is said to have resolved to take on the suffering of people in the Meiji period. To become a sokushinbutsu—a self-mummified Buddhist ascetic—he entered the earth while still alive.

The Grave of Kankai Shonin

Sokushinbutsu is a severe ascetic practice associated with Shingon Buddhism, and it is fair to say that, within Buddhism as a whole, it is highly unusual. In that sense, Daienji’s reputation differs from many other haunted places: the story does not begin with an accident or murder, but with a person deliberately choosing an act that later came to feel uncanny.

On the grounds of Daienji stands a magnificent zelkova tree, old enough that it may be decades—or perhaps even centuries—old. The temple itself sits in an otherwise ordinary part of the city, and without that tree, many visitors might pass by without noticing it. At first glance, it does not feel like a haunted spot at all.

Beneath a narrow gravestone marked for eternal memorial rites is the place where Kankai Shonin entered the earth. It is said that he still rests below it. His wish was that he be dug up after seven years. That wish, however, was never fulfilled.

The reason was that a ban on excavating graves had already been issued at the time. Anyone who carried out the request could have been punished by law.

One important detail is that Kankai Shonin entered the earth in 1878, while the prohibition had been issued in 1868. Whether there was debate or confusion at the time is unclear, but in effect, he chose the path of sokushinbutsu knowing that the act could create legal trouble. The burden, however, would not fall on him after death, but on the people connected to the temple.

Even so, it would have been cruel to dismiss his determination entirely. Once he had died, people could not simply treat his final wish as meaningless. It is easy to imagine how deep his disappointment might have been if the promise was never kept.

Those feelings of helplessness may be what helped turn Daienji into one of Niigata’s most talked-about haunted sites. Rumors began to spread that Kankai Shonin appeared there.

Reports associated with the temple include voices chanting sutras from the main hall when no one should be inside, the face of Kankai Shonin appearing somewhere on the temple grounds, and sightings of a figure believed to be the monk wandering near the temple.

Were these stories born from the wishes of local people, or from the monk’s unresolved regret? The answer remains uncertain.

The Excavation in 1976

At last, more than 90 years after the promised date, Kankai Shonin was brought up from the earth. By then, Japan’s era name had changed twice. In 1976, during the Showa period, the excavation was carried out for the TV program Wednesday Special. Work reportedly continued for three straight days, and the broadcast aired on November 2.

But there was another tragic turn. Many expected the excavation to bring an end to the temple’s haunted reputation. Unfortunately, Kankai Shonin’s body had not become a sokushinbutsu mummy. Instead, what emerged were bones.

Daienji stands near the Shinano River, and old maps of Niigata show that a canal once ran through this area. As a burial chamber for self-mummification, the location was extremely unfavorable. A Niigata map from 1903 shows a wide road in this section, while an older map from 1896 shows a canal. Daienji was positioned between the Shinano River and that canal, meaning the soil was likely humid and the groundwater level high.

Today, where the canal once ran, there is a small open space resembling a little plaza.

If there was one small mercy, it was that despite conditions that would have encouraged decay, the skull was reportedly found intact. Later, a facial reconstruction was made, and Kankai Shonin has continued to be carefully memorialized.

An inscription at Daienji summarizes his story. It identifies him as Kankai Shonin, a bodhisattva who took on the suffering of others. According to the inscription, he was born at Hongakuin, within the temple complex of Dainichibo on Mount Yudono. He became head priest of Daienji in 1869, made a great vow to become a sokushinbutsu and accept people’s suffering in their place, and underwent severe ascetic training. After abstaining from grains for 2,000 days, he entered the earth alive on August 24, 1878, the festival day of Jizo Bodhisattva. He was 52 years old.

It is said that the reconstructed face is shown to the public only during the memorial service held on August 24, the date of his nyujo, or ritual entry into the earth.

Daienji is a real temple and memorial site. If you visit, go during appropriate hours, be quiet and respectful, and do not enter restricted areas or disturb graves, memorials, or local residents.
