Drowned bodies are sometimes found after a person sinks and dies in the water, or after someone who has already died ends up in the sea, a river, a pond, or even a bathtub. In some cases, there may be an accident. In others, a crime. But in the vastness of the ocean, a human body is also part of the natural world’s organic matter.
It is not unusual for remains in the water to go undiscovered. But have you ever wondered what condition a drowned body might be in when it is finally found?
What Happens to a Body in Water?
The circumstances of a drowning can vary widely. In Japan, it is often said that the most common place for fatal drownings is actually the home bathtub.
If someone dies in a bath and is not discovered quickly, the body may begin to break down in the water. In articles about special cleaning, this kind of scene is sometimes described as extremely difficult: the skin, oils, muscles, and internal organs can decompose into a thick, slurry-like state.
Of course, the longer the body is left, the further decomposition progresses. If the person is found quickly, the situation may be very different. But when decay has advanced, the aftermath can be severe.
The bathtub may give off a terrible odor. The water is no longer clean. Blood may be present. The tub can be filled with an indescribable liquid made of decomposed matter. Simply pulling the drain plug can clog the pipes, so the area may have to be cleaned by repeatedly wiping, scooping, and washing it out.
But when the body is not in a bathtub—when it is in the sea, a river, a pond, or a lake—the story can be different.
That brings us to the urban legend known as the “laughing drowned body.”
The Diver and the Body on the Seafloor
This story takes place in the ocean.
Scuba diving is a popular marine activity, allowing people to enjoy the mysterious world beneath the waves. In the tale of the laughing drowned body, the main character is a diver.
One day, the diver was underwater, enjoying a dive, when they noticed something resting on the seafloor.
Many things can be found underwater besides fish, sea plants, and other marine life, so at first this did not seem especially unusual. But when the diver moved closer, they realized that the “something” was a person.
Shocked, the diver reportedly turned the body over.
The person was, of course, already dead. There was no air tank, and the body had clearly been under the sea for some time. But when the diver turned it over, the face seemed to move.
For a moment, it looked as if the drowned body was smiling.
So why would a corpse appear to laugh?
According to the story, the startled diver looked more closely at the face. Then mantis shrimp and crabs came out from it.
In other words, the body had not smiled at all. The movement was caused by sea creatures clinging to it and feeding on it.
Terrified, the diver surfaced and reported what they had found. The body was later recovered, and it was said that mantis shrimp, crabs, and similar creatures were attached to many parts of it.
If you ever encounter possible human remains while diving, do not touch or disturb them. Surface safely, mark the location if possible, and contact local authorities or emergency services.
The Ocean’s Cleanup Crew
This is a very different end from a body decomposing in a bathtub. In the ocean, a person who dies and is not recovered may become food for marine life.
Mantis shrimp, shrimp, and crabs are sometimes described as the ocean’s “cleanup crew.” They gather around dead flesh and survive by feeding on it.
In one experiment, pork was reportedly dropped into the sea, and mantis shrimp, crabs, shrimp, and other creatures gathered around it. In nature, humans and pigs are both sources of protein. So it is not hard to imagine the same thing happening to a drowned body.
There are bacteria in the ocean too, but something as large as a human body may become valuable food for the ocean’s scavengers before bacteria can fully break it down.
A Disturbing Thought About Seafood
Shrimp, mantis shrimp, and crabs are also luxury foods. They are ingredients many people enjoy.
Farmed seafood is fed by humans. But wild shrimp, wild mantis shrimp, and wild crabs live along the seafloor, eating all sorts of things until they are caught.
And when we eat them, we usually have no way of knowing what they ate while they were growing.
Even if what is on your plate is shrimp, crab, or mantis shrimp, thinking about what that creature may have consumed can be unsettling.
Of course, the food chain is a natural part of life. There is nothing strange about it. But the next time you enjoy fried shrimp or crab, you may find yourself wondering: is it wild-caught, or farmed?
If it is wild-caught… perhaps it is better not to think too deeply about it.
After all, eating delicious food is also part of the food chain.
The Identity of the “Laughing Drowned Body”
So, what was the true identity of the laughing drowned body?
In this urban legend, the answer is the ocean’s cleanup crew: shrimp, crabs, mantis shrimp, and other marine scavengers.
If a body is not recovered from the sea, these creatures may gather and feed. Whether the remains are human or animal, nature treats them the same way.
Shrimp, crab, and mantis shrimp are usually familiar to us as expensive and delicious seafood. But behind that image is a darker side of the natural world.
Being told that seafood is “wild” may have sounded appealing before. After hearing this story, some people might hesitate.
And as for the laughing drowned body itself—even if you understand the cause, the sight must have been horrifying for the diver who found it.
So then… what will you have for dinner tonight?
Perhaps chili shrimp?

水死体…水に沈んで溺死した人の遺体や、亡くなった後に水の中に落ちてしまった人などは、水死体として発見されることがあります。時には殺人事件…なんてこともあるわけですが、大きな海の中では人間の遺体もまた、 自然界の有機物 のひとつに過ぎません。発見されないままになることも珍しくないわけですが、 水死体が発見された時にどんな状態かを考えたことありますか?。公開日：2019年10月2日 更新日：2020年1月22日 。水死体はどんな状態か知っていますか…?
。。水死体…亡くなる状況は様々ですが、実は日本で最も多い水死は自宅のお風呂だそうです。自宅のお風呂で水死して、すぐに発見されない場合、遺体は水の中で溶けてしまうそうです。特殊清掃の記事 でもご紹介したのですが、この場合は、笑う水死体にはならず、むしろ身体の皮膚や油分、筋肉や内蔵が腐敗してドロドロになってしまうこともあるそうです。。もちろん、放置される時間が長いほど腐敗は進みます。。すぐに発見された場合はそんなことはないんですが…腐敗が進むと、現場はかなり壮絶なことになってしまうらしく、後処理がとても大変なのだとか。
。浴槽からは悪臭が漂いますし、中の水は当然きれいではありません。血液が飛び散っていることもありますし、浴槽の中はドロドロにとけたなんとも言えない液体で満たされてしまっています。。そのまま栓を抜くと「つまって」しまうので、拭き取ったり救ったりを繰り返して洗浄して…とにかく大変なわけです。これが自然界の中で、たとえば、海や川、池や湖の場合はちょっと訳が違います。それが今回お話する都市伝説の「笑う水死体」のお話です。。水死体が笑っていた…その正体は?
!。自然界の水辺はいろいろありますが、今回お話するのは海でのことです。海の中の世界を楽しみ趣味として知られているスキューバダイビング… 人気があるマリンレジャーですが、笑う水死体の話は、ダイバーが主役 です。。あるとき、ダイバーが海に潜ってダイビングを楽しんでいたそうです。すると海底に何かが沈んでいるのを発見します。海の中には、海洋生物や植物以外にもいろんなものが沈んでいることかありますし、ここまでは珍しいことではなかったそうです。ですが、近づいて見るとその「何か」が人であることに気づきます。
。。そして、驚いたダイバーはその沈んでいた人をひっくり返したのだそう。当然、もう亡くなっているわけですが、ひっくり返したときにのその水死体の顔が動いてまるで「 笑っているように 」見えたのです。ですが、海底に長い時間沈んていたわけで、酸素ボンベもしていないのですから、当然亡くなっています。では、なぜ遺体が笑ったように見えたのでしょうか。。そのダイバーはびっくりしてその遺体の顔を確認したそう。すると、顔からシャコやカニが出できたんだとか。
つまり遺体が笑ったように見えたのは、シャコやカニがくっついて遺体を食べていたからということ…。。ぎょっとしたダイバーはすぐに浮上して通報し、その遺体は引き上げられたそうですが、遺体のいたるところにシャコやカニがくっついていたそう。お風呂で溺死して腐敗するのとは全く別の結末…ドロドロに溶けてしまうことありませんが、海で水死し発見されなかったらこうして海の生物のエサになってしまうというわけです。海のお掃除屋さん。。ちなみに、シャコや海老、カニなどは「 海のお掃除屋さん 」とも言われていて、死肉に群がって食べて生きている生物です。
ある実験で、海中に豚肉を落としたところ、シャコやカニ、エビなどが群がったとか。人も豚も自然の中では同じタンパク質ですから、水死体も同じことになっていたとしても不思議ではありません。海の中にはバクテリアもいますが、人のような大きなものはバクテリアで分解される前に 海のお掃除屋さんの貴重な食べ物になる というわけです。。。エビやシャコ、カニは高級食材でもありますし、一般的に よく食べられる食材 でもあります。養殖の場合は、人から貰ったエサを食べているわけですが、天然ものの海老やシャコやカニなどは捕獲されるまでの間にいろんなものを食べて海底で生きていたはず…。
そして、それを食べる私たちには「 何を食べていたのか 」を調べる方法など当然ありません。。食べているものは、エビやカニ、シャコだったとしても、その生物が何を食べて大きくなったのかを考えるとゾッとしてしまいます。食物連鎖は自然の節理ですからこれは当たり前の事であるのですが、 今自分が、美味しそうに食べているエビフライやカニ…は天然物ですか?それとも養殖ですか?。もし前者なら・・・これ以上は想像の域をでないことですから自重しておきましょう。
いいんですよ、美味しく食べることもまた食物連鎖のひとつなのですから・・・。。「笑う水死体の正体」のまとめ。。笑う水死体の正体…は海のお掃除屋さんと言われていエビやカニ、シャコなどの海洋生物でした。海で水死して遺体が回収されないと、海のお掃除屋さんがよってきて遺体を食べてお掃除をするというわけ。それは人でも動物でもおなじことです。。さあ、今日のディナーは何にしますかエビチリなんていかがでしょう?。もちろん天然物で・・・。。甲殻類の天然物には…。
普段は高級食材として親しまれているエビ、カニ、シャコなどですが、実はこんな裏話があるとは恐ろしい話ですね…。天然物と言われると今までは喜んでいましたが、これからは少し躊躇してしまうかもしれません。そして「笑う水死体」という現象。原因が分かっていたとしても、発見したダイバーはさぞ恐ろしい光景だったのではないでしょうか？。それはさておき…。こんな美味しそうな赤エビはいかがでしょうか？
