Cleaning is something most of us do in one form or another almost every day. Keeping things clean feels normal, ordinary, even automatic. But there is a kind of cleaning that most people never see: “special cleaning.”
So what exactly does that mean, and what kinds of places require it?
What Is Special Cleaning?
Special cleaning is exactly what it sounds like: cleaning that is far from ordinary.
The places where it is needed vary, but many of them are ordinary homes. In other words, this is not some distant, unrelated world. Special cleaning is the work of restoring a room after a suicide, an unnatural death, or a lonely death in which a person passed away alone and was not found right away.
In cases like these, after the first person discovers the body, police officers are usually the next to enter the scene. Once the police have removed the body, the room is left behind. That is where special cleaners come in.
For most people, simply hearing that someone died in a room is enough to send a chill down the spine. But the actual scenes handled by special cleaners are, of course, not clean at all.
At the site of a suicide, bodily waste or blood may be scattered around the room. In cases of lonely death, decomposition can cause bodily fluids to soak into flooring or tatami mats. The smell can be overwhelming. Things the police did not collect as part of the body, such as hair or peeled skin, are also cleaned away by special cleaners.
If a body has decomposed, maggots may be present as well.
Some scenes reportedly leave a clear human-shaped stain on a tatami mat or bed where bodily fluids seeped out. There may be odor, insects, and in some cases, the person may have died by suicide or alone inside a home already piled with garbage.
Cleaning and restoring that space is the job of special cleaning.
Disturbing Stories From Special Cleaning Sites
It is easy to imagine that special cleaning sites can be extreme, but some accounts are especially shocking.
In many cases where special cleaning is needed, the room has become what people in Japan sometimes call a “garbage house.” That means pests such as cockroaches may already be breeding there.
If someone has died inside such a place, workers may first have to push through piles of trash, and sometimes even climb over them, just to find the body.
If there are signs that a pet lived there, the pet may also have died by the time the room is discovered. A human body alone is already difficult to face, but when an animal body is also present, decomposition and insects can make the scene even more horrific.
There are also lonely-death cases in which someone dies in the bathtub and is not found for a long time. When a body remains submerged in bathwater, it can begin to break down in the tub. If the drain plug is simply pulled, the drain may clog. So workers may have to strain out what remains before draining the water.
The reason it clogs is, of course, parts of the body.
On floors, workers may find bodily fluids, peeled skin, hair, and sometimes even fragments of bone or nails. In some cases, special cleaners remove flooring soaked with bodily fluids, clean underneath, and even handle replacement work.
The thought of peeling up a floor stained with fluid that once formed part of a human being is deeply unsettling.
Incidentally, even when hair or other material is clearly part of a human body, if it remains after the police have finished their work, it is generally disposed of during the cleaning process.
Special Cleaning Is Not as Distant as It Sounds
Special cleaning is the work of restoring a place after a body has been removed. But it is not something that only happens somewhere far away.
It could happen to anyone. A strange smell from a nearby home may be what leads people to discover that someone has died alone. As Japan’s population continues to age, lonely deaths remain a serious social issue. Death comes for everyone, and no one knows when, where, or under what circumstances it will happen.
Someone who lived normally until yesterday may suddenly be gone. A neighbor you have not seen lately may have passed away. Special cleaning could be happening much closer to you than you think.
And it does not happen only in houses, condominiums, or apartments. It can also happen in hotels.
Unlike renting an apartment, hotel stays are temporary, so guests are rarely informed about such incidents. If an unnatural death, lonely death, or suicide occurs, special cleaners may be quietly called in. The room is cleaned, furniture and items may be replaced, and in some cases, another guest may be checked into that room as soon as the same day.
That means the ordinary hotel room you casually stay in may once have been the place where someone ended their life and was later cleaned by specialists.
When you think of it that way, the stories of people experiencing knocking sounds or other strange phenomena in hotel rooms may feel a little different. Of course, such experiences are personal and cannot be proven simply because a room was cleaned. Still, it is possible that without ever knowing it, you may have stayed in a hotel room that once required special cleaning.
If something about a hotel room makes you uncomfortable, speak with the staff or request a different room. Do not enter restricted areas or try to investigate incidents on your own.
A Necessary Job, but a Frightening Reality
You may feel that special cleaning has nothing to do with you, but somewhere today, someone is likely doing this work.
An incident or accident requiring special cleaning could happen in your neighborhood, or even in a hotel where you stay while traveling. Some rooms reportedly still show traces of bodily fluids even after being cleaned by professionals.
It is a job someone has to do.

清掃…といえば、ほとんどの方が何かしらの形でほぼ毎日しているのではないでしょうか。綺麗にすることは私たちの日常の中ではごく普通の、当たり前のことですが、そんな清掃のひとつに 「特殊清掃」 があるのをご存知でしょうか？。特殊清掃…について見てみましょう。。公開日：2019年10月2日 更新日：2020年1月17日 。特殊清掃ってなに？どんなところを掃除するの？。。特殊清掃とは、その名のとおり 「特殊な清掃」 のことです。では、どう特殊なのでしょうか。
。特殊清掃が行われる場所は様々ですが、一般住宅で行われることも多く、決して遠い世界のことではありません。特殊清掃とは、 自殺や変死、孤独死した場合などにその現場を掃除するというもの です。。自殺、変死、孤独死などの場合でも、第一発見者の次に現場に入るのは警察官です。。警察官が遺体を回収した後の部屋…ここを掃除するのが特殊清掃です。普通の人なら 「誰かが亡くなった部屋」 というだけでもぞっとするかもしれません。もちろん、特殊清掃の現場は決して綺麗なものではないんです。
。自殺の現場には、汚物や血しぶきが飛び散っていることもありますし、孤独死した人の遺体は腐敗して体液などが床や畳に染みていることも珍しくありません。かなりの異臭もしますし、警察官が遺体の一部として回収しなかったもの…髪の毛や剥がれた皮膚なども特殊清掃がきれいに掃除をします。当然、遺体が腐敗していれば、うじなんかもわいてます。。畳やベッドに染み出した体液が人の形に綺麗に残ってしまっている現場なんかもあるとか。臭いやうじ、そして中にはゴミ屋敷のような場所で孤独死したり自殺してしまった現場なんかもあるわけです。
ここを綺麗にするのが特殊清掃の仕事です。特殊清掃の仰天エピソード。。特殊清掃の現場がかなりものすごいことになっているのはなんとなく解りますが、ここで 特殊清掃のエピソードを少しご紹介 してみましょう。まず、特殊清掃が必要になるケースでは部屋はゴミ屋敷と化していることが少なくありません。つまり、ゴキブリなどの害虫も発生しているということ…。。その中で人が亡くなっているとなると、まずはゴミの山をかき分けて…時にはゴミの山に登って まずは遺体を探さなければならない こともあるのだそう。
。そこにもし、ペットの痕跡があってもそのペットもすでに息耐えていることが多いんだとか。人の遺体だけでもかなりのものですが、そこに動物の遺体まである… 当然腐敗して虫がわいているそうで現場はかなりの惨状 でしょう。あと、孤独死の場合、湯船の中でなくなってそのまま時間が経ってしまうというケースもあります。湯船に浸かったまま人が亡くなってそのまま時間が経つと、湯船の中で遺体が溶けてしまいます。。そのまま栓を抜くと詰まってしまうので、残ったものをこし取ってから栓を抜いて流すという作業をします。
もちろん、詰まる原因は… 遺体の一部 ということになります。。床に染みた体液やはがれ落ちた皮膚…髪の毛や、時には骨の一部や爪、なんかが落ちていることもあるとのことです。特殊清掃ではその体液が染みた床を剥がして清掃をした後に、張替えまで請け負うこともあるとか。もともと人の一部だった体液が染みた床を剥がす… 想像するとかなりゾッとしてしまいますよね。。ちなみに、人体の一部であることが解っている髪の毛などの場合でも、警察が入った後に残されているものは、基本的に処分するそうです。
特殊清掃は他人事ではない…。特殊清掃…遺体などが回収された後の現状回復をするお仕事ですが、決して他人事ではありません。自分がそうなる可能性もありますし、近隣の住宅から異臭がする…そうやって孤独死が発覚することは珍しくないのです。高齢化が進む今、孤独死はあとを立ちませんし、死は必ず訪れるものですから、いつどこでどんなことになるかは誰にも解らないのです。。昨日まで普通に生活していた人が無くなった…最近見なくなった隣人がいる…もしかしたらあなたのすぐ近くで特殊清掃が行われているかもしれないんです。
そして、特殊清掃は自宅やマンション、アパートだけではありません。実はホテルでも行われています。。。ホテルの場合は、 部屋を借りるのとは違いますから告知されることはまずありません。。変死や孤独死、自殺が発生したら特殊清掃がこっそり呼ばれて、清掃作業が行われ、家具などをすべて新しくして早い場合はその日のうちにその部屋にも宿泊客が招き入れられるのです。つまり、何気なく泊まったホテルの部屋で誰かが命を終えて、特殊清掃がされているかもしれないということ…。
