When you hear the word occult, what comes to mind? Urban legends, unidentified creatures, conspiracy theories, maybe even UFOs. The world is full of stories that sit somewhere between rumor, folklore, and the unexplained.
Places where these strange reports seem to gather are sometimes called mystery spots. One such place is Tashiro Pass, a remote area in Japan’s Tohoku region.
What Is Tashiro Pass?
Tashiro Pass lies on the border between Yamagata and Miyagi Prefectures. The roads are said to be poorly maintained, the surrounding forest is dense, and in winter the area can be closed due to heavy snow.
Over the years, several occult-style stories have become attached to Tashiro Pass, including:
- A Japan Self-Defense Forces aircraft crash
- A mysterious cave whose location is now unknown
- Reports connected to yokai and mountain entities
Here are three of the best-known mysteries associated with Tashiro Pass.
1968: The Self-Defense Forces Aircraft Crash
A memorial monument stands at Tashiro Pass. It is connected to the crash of a Self-Defense Forces aircraft in January 1968.
Many theories have circulated about the crash, including claims that:
- The aircraft fell almost vertically
- The wreckage showed little visible damage and did not burn
- A Self-Defense Forces rescue team sent to the site disappeared
Information about these claims is inconsistent, and there does not seem to be a reliable way to prove every detail. Still, because a memorial monument exists, the aircraft crash itself appears to have been a real event.
Some people have connected the crash to UFO rumors. This airspace has long been associated with sightings of unidentified flying objects, leading to speculation that the aircraft may have encountered something unusual. Later stories about an unknown cave in the area even claim that a disc-shaped craft was found inside.
A more grounded theory argues that the crash was caused by a severe blizzard. Tashiro Pass sits near the route between air corridors over the Sea of Japan and the Pacific. Because Tashiro Pass and Matsushima Air Base are said to lie beneath that air corridor, one theory suggests the aircraft was returning to Matsushima when it lost its way in the storm.
In 1968, the Tohoku region was reportedly hit by heavy snow and fierce blizzard conditions. If the aircraft lost its course and then ran out of power, it may have been forced down at Tashiro Pass. Because of deep snow and the aircraft’s ability to glide even after engine failure, it may have landed on the snow without catching fire. In that version, the snow acted like a cushion.
That explanation is plausible. But for anyone who still wants to leave room for the occult, the next mystery is hard to ignore.
The Notes of Ko Takahashi
According to the story, the Takahashi family went into Tashiro Pass to gather wild mountain vegetables. There, they were struck by an unexplained green gas and experienced paranormal phenomena.
Beyond that, they reportedly discovered a mysterious cave. Inside, they found a plate marked with the name Mitsubishi Aviation Company. Overwhelmed by the strange, unreal atmosphere of the cave, the group tried to escape. They were then hit again by a green beam of light and lost consciousness.
When they woke up, they were lying in the forest of Tashiro Pass. After returning from the mountain, Ko Takahashi left behind written notes about the experience and then passed away. The truth of the story remains unclear.
The key points of the Takahashi account are:
- Paranormal phenomena occurred at Tashiro Pass
- The group found a mysterious cave whose location is now unknown
- The person who wrote the account later died
It is exactly the kind of eerie, half-documented story that attracts occult fans.
Tashiro Pass itself is said to be the kind of dangerous place that even locals avoid. In the Takahashi story, the group ignored warnings and pushed deeper into the area, eventually becoming involved in something unexplained.
The notes were published in 1979 in a magazine. After reading them, a person named Chiren Shiono reportedly went to investigate Tashiro Pass and later wrote a report on the area in 1985.
According to Shiono, he had an experience similar to Takahashi’s. He claimed that inside the cave were a rocket fighter and an unidentified flying object. He also reported finding the same Mitsubishi Aviation Company plate and described the interior structure of the cave in detail.
Not long after his report appeared in a magazine, Shiono is said to have disappeared.
In this version of the legend, the UFO sightings around Tashiro Pass are tied directly to the cave, where an unidentified craft was supposedly sitting inside. The rocket fighter was later said to have been identified as the Shusui, a so-called phantom fighter aircraft from Japan’s wartime period.
Is Tashiro Pass the Setting of Yamanoke?
Tashiro Pass is also rumored to be connected to Yamanoke, a famous story from Japan’s online horror culture.
In discussions of the original story, people have pointed to details such as the location being on the border of Yamagata and Miyagi, and not on the Yamadera side or the Sakunami side. Based on those clues, some readers have speculated that the place where Yamanoke appeared may have been Tashiro Pass.
This remains only an interpretation by readers and horror fans, not a confirmed location.
Closing Thoughts
Tashiro Pass is said to be almost taboo even among local people, a place where few willingly enter. The roads are reportedly not well paved, and winter conditions can be dangerous. If you ever consider visiting the area, check road closures and weather conditions in advance, avoid restricted or private land, and do not attempt unsafe mountain travel.
Japan has many UFO and UAP sighting stories. In popular culture, UFOs are often imagined as alien spacecraft, but the term simply means unidentified flying object. It does not prove that extraterrestrials are involved.
In September 2019, CNN reported that the U.S. Navy had confirmed certain videos of unidentified aerial phenomena as genuine footage of unexplained encounters. The Navy used the term UAP, meaning unidentified aerial phenomena, rather than UFO. Officials also noted that stigma had long discouraged pilots from reporting such incidents.
Whatever the truth may be, one thing is certain: reports of unidentified aerial phenomena are no longer dismissed as easily as they once were.
And if such things have appeared in American airspace, it is not hard to wonder whether Japan may have its own hidden stories as well.

２田代峠とは？。。田代峠とは、山形県と宮城県の県境にある地域です。道はほとんど整備されておらず、樹海が広がり、冬季は降雪によって通行禁止区域にもなっています。そんな田代峠では、さまざまなオカルト現象が起こっているのです。例えば・・・。・自衛隊機の墜落 。・所在不明、謎の洞窟に迷い込む 。・妖怪の出没 。今回は 田代峠で起こった3つのミステリー についてお話しします。1968年：自衛隊機の墜落。。田代峠には「慰霊碑」が立っています。1968年1月に自衛隊機が墜落したというものです。
この自衛隊機の墜落に関して、様々な説が上がっています。・機体は垂直に落下した 。・墜落した機体は目立った外傷がなく、炎上もなかった 。・救助に派遣された自衛隊チームが失踪 。どの説に関しても「 情報の錯綜 」が起こっており、真実を立証する手立てが存在しないことがジレンマではありますが、慰霊碑が実際に立っていることから 「自衛隊機の墜落」 があったことは事実であるようです。この空域は昔からUFOの目撃情報が多発していたため、 未確認飛行物体との戦闘が行われていたのではないか？
との情報もあります。（後述する所在不明の洞窟には円盤状の飛行物体が鎮座してあったとの情報があります）。田代峠で起こった自衛隊機の墜落は「猛吹雪によるもの」。機体に目立った外傷がなかったことについて、興味深い考察をされている方がいました。（参考文献2） 。田代峠は山形県と宮城県の県境に位置していると前述しましたね。実際の地図では、こちらの位置関係になっています。。日本海・太平洋上には空軍の戦闘機航路が走っており、本土をまたいでその航路を経由するための空域が、本土上に存在します。
コリドーと呼ばれており、田代峠と松島基地がその直下に位置していることから 「墜落自衛隊機は松島基地への帰航途中だった」 とされる説です。墜落が起こった1968年、当時の東北地帯は激しい吹雪に見舞われていました。帰航途中であった自衛隊機は吹雪により進路を失い、やがてエンジン切れを起こしてしまったために墜落してしまった・・・と考察することができます。。そうして不時着したのが 「田代峠」 だったわけです。十分な降雪量・エンジン切れを起こしても滑空することができる戦闘機モデルだったことから「炎上することなく雪の上に不時着」しました。
積雪がクッションになったのです。。しかしながら、オカルトを完全に否定したくない筆者としましてはUFO戦闘説を否定したくありません。それを語るに、 「高橋コウの手記」と呼ばれる第２のミステリーが存在 します。高橋コウの手記。。山菜採りに向かっていた高橋一家は田代峠にて原因不明の「緑色のガス」に見舞われ、超常現象を体験する。その先で見つけた謎の洞窟内では「三菱航空格式会社」と記されているプレートを発見する。非現実的とも形容できる洞窟内の雰囲気に圧倒されて脱出を試みた一同であったが、再び緑色の光線を浴び失神。
気付けば田代峠の樹海にて倒れていたものの、下山後手記を残すとともに他界。事実は闇に包まれたままであった。高橋コウの手記（参考文献3） 。話の要点は。・田代峠にて超常現象が起こる 。・所在不明の洞窟を発見 。・手記の執筆者は他界 。という点です。なんともオカルトじみた話でワクワクしますね。。田代峠自体が、地元の人間なら踏み入らないような「危険な」場所であるそうです。。高橋コウさん一行はその制止を振り切り奥へ進んだ結果、超常現象に巻き込まれました。
この手記が公開されたのは1979年のこと。中央公論社の婦人公論にて掲載されました。その投稿を見た塩野智廉さんという方が、実際に調査へ行った時のレポートが存在します。塩野智廉さんによる田代峠の調査レポート(1985)。。。高橋コウさんと同様の経験をした塩野さんによれば、洞窟内部には 「ロケット戦闘機」「未確認飛行物体」 があったそうです。また、三菱航空機格式会社とのプレートを同様に発見したほか、洞窟内部の構造が鮮明に明らかになりました。彼のレポートが雑誌に掲載されて間も無く、塩野さんは消息を絶っています。
。田代峠のUFO目撃情報を証明するがごとく、洞窟内部には未確認飛行物体が鎮座されていたそうです。また、ロケット戦闘機は後の調査によって「幻の戦闘機、秋水」であったことが確認されています。（参考文献1）。洒落にならないほど怖い話を集めてみない？「ヤマノケ」の元ネタは田代峠。。怪談話で有名なシリーズ「洒落怖」のヤマノケがあった場所が田代峠であると言われています。。ヤマノケの全貌はこちらから。（>>436より）。。スレッド内でも言及されいますが、「山形と宮城の県境」「山寺側でなく、作並でもない」ということからヤマノケが出没した場所が田代峠なのではないか？
と考察されています。おわりに。田代峠自体、地元の方でも滅多に踏み入れないような 「禁忌」にも近い場所 であるそうです。道路が十分に塗装されていないそうなので、 現地へ向かう際はくれぐれも自己責任 でお願いします。日本でも多発するUFOの目撃情報。UFO＝宇宙人の乗り物、というイメージが強いですが、実は正確には「未確認飛行物体」を指すものですから、絶対に宇宙人が乗っていると断定することは出来ません。しかし、2020年現在、未確認飛行物体は公式にその存在を認められつつあります。
以下、はCNNによって2019年9月に発表された内容です。未確認飛行物体の目撃報告、米海軍が「本物」と確認 。公開された映像がとらえているのは、海軍の訓練空域で頻繁に目撃される侵入事案のほんの一部にすぎないと報道官は強調。「長年の間、海軍のパイロットはそうした侵入事案を報告してこなかった。映像中に存在する、あるいは存在しないものに関する従来の用語や仮説には、パイロットの名誉を損なうような固定観念が付いて回ったからだ」と述べ、ＵＡＰの正体を探るためには、そうした物体を目撃した訓練生に報告を促すしかないと話している。
。引用元： 。未確認飛行物体の存在を認めた米海軍はUFOではなくUAPという総称で呼んでいます。同報道内にもありますが、UAPとは 「未確認航空現象」 とのこと。。いずれにせよ、かつては頑なに否定を続けていた未確認飛行物体の存在が認められていることに違いはありません。隠しきれない真実 ・ 米軍が認めた宇宙人との歴史 。普通に考えて見て下さい・・・・。あなたは世界中で”アメリカだけ”が未確認飛行物体と接触していると思いますか？
