Content warning: This article discusses displays of real human remains, including fetuses and pregnant bodies. If you are sensitive to gore or medical imagery, do not image-search these exhibits out of curiosity.
Do you remember the Human Body exhibitions that became a major topic in Japan some years ago?
They were not displays of models. They exhibited real human specimens. The technique used on many of those bodies was called plastination.
Real human specimens
In Japan, the Human Body exhibitions were held in various locations from 1996 to 1998, and again in 2002. It has been said that the Plastination Association, which lent out the specimens, earned more than 900 million dollars in profit.
If you have a weak stomach, or if grotesque imagery bothers you, it is not recommended that you image-search the Human Body exhibition keywords, especially the version held from 2002 onward under the name New Human Body Exhibition. The visuals were extremely intense.
What was shown there was not a mannequin or a replica. These were real human bodies, processed with plastination. In other words, it would not be wrong to call them corpses.
The exhibits included full-body vascular specimens, bodies with organs exposed, fetuses, pregnant women, faces with only half of the skin removed, bodies sliced into cross-sections, and specimens with the skin removed so that only muscles and internal organs could be seen. Many of them were fixed into unusually dramatic poses.
There were fetal specimens arranged by month of development. There were also displays showing a pregnant woman with her abdomen opened while the baby remained inside. Some visitors reportedly felt ill while walking through the exhibition.
That reaction is understandable. After all, every specimen being shown was a real human body.
Because plastination can preserve fine detail, many specimens still showed recognizable facial expressions. When you saw the strange poses, it was hard not to wonder: even if these people had agreed to donate their bodies, was it really acceptable to fix them like this and display them in front of crowds?
If the purpose was medical study, one could argue that such bodies did not need to be displayed in an entertainment-style public exhibition. Most visitors were not medical professionals. They were ordinary members of the public.
There is also an important distinction: the organization that first developed plastination and held the original human-body exhibitions was not the same as the group that later held the New Human Body Exhibition. The later exhibition is often remembered as the one with the strongest visual impact.
It is not clear what kinds of people became these specimens, how they died, or through what exact process their bodies were obtained. That uncertainty led many people to ask whether everything about the displays was truly acceptable.
There were also rumors, and they should be treated only as rumors, that the specimens used in the New Human Body Exhibition organized by a Chinese group may have been obtained through inhumane methods. Nothing in this article can confirm that claim, but the rumor itself became part of the unease surrounding the exhibition.
One acquaintance with strong spiritual sensitivity once visited the exhibition without knowing what it was. According to that person, they could not stay in the venue for even five minutes because it felt unbearable, and they sensed many kinds of negative energy.
Again: searching images from the Human Body exhibitions is at your own risk. It is not recommended.
What is plastination?
Plastination is a preservation technique in which the water and fat inside a corpse, or part of a corpse, are replaced with synthetic resin such as plastic.
Bodies preserved this way are said to retain their tissue structure even under a microscope. The point of the method is that the specimen can be stored without rotting and without producing the smell normally associated with decay.
The technique was developed by the German anatomist Gunther von Hagens. It became known through exhibitions such as BODY WORLDS, as well as Japanese exhibitions commonly translated as The World of the Human Body and The Human Body Exhibition.
The New Human Body Exhibition that began in 2002, however, was not organized by the German side, but by a Chinese group.
In plastination, processing begins before rigor mortis sets in. That means the striking poses seen in the Human Body exhibitions were presumably decided while rigor mortis had not yet begun. After that, the body goes through processes such as soaking in acetone before the final specimen is completed.
When you think about the pregnant-woman specimen with the abdomen opened, that detail becomes especially unsettling. The idea of positioning a pregnant woman and fetus for display before rigor mortis has set in is deeply disturbing.
No living person has experienced death and returned with a clear report, so nobody can truly know what the dead perceive. Still, it is often said that after cardiac arrest, hearing may remain for a short time. How long that hearing might last is uncertain.
Among the people who became plastinated specimens, could any of them have heard the conversations of those preparing their bodies for display? It is a frightening thought.
Plastinated specimens are not limited to humans. Animal specimens made with similar techniques also exist, and some are sold openly.
The exhibition can no longer be seen in Japan
The Human Body exhibitions displayed real human bodies preserved through plastination, but as of 2020, there were no places in Japan where these exhibitions were being shown.
They were displayed legally and attracted a great deal of attention at the time. Yet at some point, they faded from public conversation, and the exhibitions themselves stopped being held.
To summarize: the Human Body exhibitions became famous because they displayed real human corpses, not models. The New Human Body Exhibition held from 2002 onward was especially remembered for specimens with an intense visual impact.
Plastination replaces the water and fat in a corpse with plastic resin, preserving the body in a form that does not decay in the usual way. The result is scientifically fascinating, but for many people, it is also deeply unsettling.
Do you have the courage to search for it?
If this topic bothers you, absolutely do not search for it out of curiosity. The descriptions here have been softened considerably. Looking up images or videos related to these exhibitions may be something you regret, so decide carefully and at your own risk.
The Human Body exhibitions can no longer be visited in Japan, but DVD versions have been released. They are only for people who know they can handle this kind of material.
