On the border of Tokyo and Saitama, inside Tokyo Metropolitan Sayama Park, there is a pond long known among local ghost-story fans. Its official name is Yakebe Pond, but many people call it Tatchan Pond.
That nickname is said to come from a sad incident in the Taisho era: a young boy called Tatchan drowned there, along with two young men who tried to save him. Since then, the pond has become one of western Tokyo’s better-known haunted spots.
Here is the story behind Tatchan Pond, along with the ghostly rumors that have gathered around it.
A Quiet Pond in Sayama Park
Tatchan Pond, or Yakebe Pond, is located inside Tokyo Metropolitan Sayama Park near Lake Tama in the Higashiyamato area of western Tokyo. It is not a large pond, but in the daytime it can feel calm and pleasant.
In the past, people could fish there for small freshwater fish and crayfish, but fishing is now prohibited. Even today, local residents appreciate the quiet scenery, especially in autumn, when the changing leaves are reflected on the still surface of the water.
But that same quietness can also feel lonely.
At night, people say the atmosphere changes. Even those who do not consider themselves sensitive to spirits sometimes describe the area as unnervingly still. Visitors who come after dark are often there for courage tests or ghost-spot visits rather than ordinary sightseeing.
If you visit, follow park rules, stay on marked paths, and avoid going alone at night. The pond is a real public space, not an abandoned site.
The Origin of the Name Tatchan Pond
The legend of Tatchan Pond is introduced in a local-history book published in 1982, Assorted Tales of Higashiyamato. According to that account, the pond was once called Yakecho, a shortened form of Yakebe Reservoir.
From the Meiji era into the Taisho era, the reservoir was said to be about 3,300 square meters in area and around seven meters deep. In summer, children from the neighborhood came almost every day to swim.
Then, in August 1925, an accident occurred.
On a blazing hot summer afternoon, a 10-year-old boy began to drown. The boy was known as Tatchan.
When people shouted that Tatchan was drowning, two young men nearby jumped into the pond to rescue him. At the time, reservoir construction work was underway, and many workers were in the park. In a sense, these men were used to working around water.
And yet, according to the story, not only Tatchan but also the two young men disappeared beneath the surface.
The people nearby were stunned. Other workers got into a small boat and searched the wide pond using an anchor-like tool. After about 30 minutes, the bodies of all three were pulled up from the bottom.
Attempts were made to revive them with artificial respiration, but none of them survived.
Tatchan’s mother had already passed away, and he was being raised by his father. He was the youngest of three siblings. His family and neighbors were deeply saddened by his death at such a young age.
Out of pity and grief, people began calling Yakecho by a new name: Tatchan Pond.
Ghost Stories and Rumors Around the Pond
Perhaps because of that tragic history, Tatchan Pond is now known as a haunted spot in Tokyo.
Sayama Park itself is spacious, and during the day many people come to walk, relax, or sightsee. But at night, the feeling is said to change completely. There are fewer people around, and visitors may feel as if they have been left behind in the middle of nature.
Some ghost stories claim that if you go to Tatchan Pond at night, you may hear the groaning voice of a young boy. Others say that when someone rides a bicycle past the pond, the pedals suddenly become heavy, as if an unseen person has climbed onto the back.
There are also stories of a pale white hand reaching up from the shore and grabbing someone’s ankle, as well as rumors of strange spirit photographs taken near the water.
A simple explanation, within the ghost-story tradition, is that these apparitions are connected to Tatchan and the two young men who drowned while trying to save him.
But there is one unsettling question in the legend: Tatchan was only 10 years old, but why did two young men used to water-related work also drown?
The pond was apparently deeper in those days than it is now, but it was not a stormy sea or a bottomless swamp. Some versions of the story wonder whether Tatchan and the two rescuers were dragged down by the same mysterious white hand.
If so, the legend suggests, the pond may have been cursed even before the accident.
Whether you take these stories as folklore, local memory, or pure urban legend, Tatchan Pond remains a quiet place with a sad origin. Visitors should treat it respectfully, remember that it is part of an active public park, and avoid risky behavior around the water.

たっちゃん池（宅部池）は多摩地域の有名心霊スポット。。東京都の心霊スポット 「たっちゃん池（宅部池）」 は、 大和市の 多摩湖 近く、 都立狭山公園 の園内にあります。あまり大きな池ではありませんが、静かでいい場所です。昔はモツゴやタナゴ、ザリガニなどの 釣り が楽しめましたが、現在釣りは禁止されています。今でもその静かなたっちゃん池は地元民に愛され、とくに秋になると美しい紅葉が穏やかな湖面に映し出されます。。しかし…… 静かということは、それだけ寂しい場所でもある ということです。

明治～大正時代には 広さ3300㎡ 、 水深7メートル ほどの大きさで、夏になると近くの子どもたちは毎日泳ぎにきたといいます。しかし 大正14年（1925年）8月 、事件は起こりました。やけつくような真夏の昼下り、 10歳の少年がおぼれてしまった のです。少年は 「たっちゃん」 と呼ばれていました。「たっちゃんが溺れた！」という叫び声に、 近くの青年2人 が救助のために池の中に飛び込みました。当時はちょうど 貯水池工事 の真っ最中で、大勢の 作業員 たちが公園にいたのです。
彼らはいわば、 池のプロ です。。しかし、たっちゃんはおろか、2人の青年も池の中に沈んでしまったというのです。。あたりの人々はびっくり仰天。他の作業員が 小舟 に乗り、井戸の「いかり」を手に、広い池の中を捜索しました。3 0分ほど探し回ったあげく、ぐったりとした3人の 死体 が水底から引き上げられました 。人工呼吸をするも息を吹き返すことはなく、3人は 帰らぬ人 となったといいます。たっちゃんの母親はすでに亡くなっており、 父親の手一つ で育てられていた、3人兄弟の 末っ子 でした。

。1つ奇妙な疑問として、 10歳のたっちゃんはともかく、なぜ治水のプロであった青年2人まで溺れてしまったのか 、という問題があります。たしかに当時の宅部池は現在と比べて水深が深かったようですが、別に 荒れた海 でもなければ、 底なし沼 でもありません。もしかしたら たっちゃんも、青年2人も、 白い手 に引きずり込まれたのかもしれません 。3人が事故に遭う前から、この池は呪われていた ……ということです。今回は東京都の心霊スポット、たっちゃん池（宅部池）の心霊現象とその由来を紹介しました。
