English Version

Hakusan Island, home to Hakusan Shrine in Yura, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, is surrounded by unsettling rumors tied to the sea, the cliffs, and those who are said to have died there.

There have reportedly been many sightings of spirits believed to be connected to suicides. Another rumor says that if you walk across the red bridge linking the island to the shore late at night, white hands may reach up from the surface of the sea.

There is also said to be a memorial monument on the island. According to local rumor, anyone who touches it may be followed—or possessed—by the spirit of someone who died in the line of duty.

The area is also rumored to be a frequent suicide spot. Hakusan Island has many steep cliffs, and the rough waves of the Sea of Japan are said to be unforgiving once someone is pulled in. At night, when the island grows quiet and empty, it is said that some people seeking a final place are drawn here.

Hakusan Shrine is located around Yura 2-chome in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. If you visit, go during safe hours, stay on marked paths, avoid the cliffs and rough seas, and do not trespass or approach dangerous areas after dark.
