Mikozawa Tunnel in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, is said to be the site of repeated sightings of a ghost in work clothes. Other rumors mention the apparition of a woman, as well as a figure whose right eye appears to be sunken in.
The tunnel is also linked to a robbery-murder case involving a taxi driver. According to local stories, the spirit of the driver who died in that incident has been seen there as well.
During the tunnel’s construction, a cave-in reportedly occurred, causing many deaths. A memorial monument was later built to console the dead, and the names of the workers who lost their lives are inscribed on it.
Location: around 10 Nishime-Bo, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture.
If you visit, remember that this is a real road and local area. Do not stop inside the tunnel, block traffic, enter restricted areas, or disturb memorials or nearby residents.
