In Japan, a “pension” is a small Western-style guesthouse or inn. The place commonly known in ghost-spot circles as the “Ghost Pension” is said to have had the official name Okinashima Pension, located in Inawashiro, Fukushima Prefecture.
According to the rumor, if you walk through the surrounding forest, the spirit of the owner may guide you toward the pension and invite you inside. From a second-floor window, the ghost of his wife is said to stare silently down. On the first-floor windows, people claim to have seen the glass covered with the handprints of children.
The story that spread about the building says the owner died by suicide in the wine cellar in the basement. His wife, after discovering him, allegedly lost her mind and took the life of their son. After that, the place came to be called a “ghost mansion” and was featured in paranormal TV programs and magazines, eventually becoming known nationwide as a haunted spot.
There are other versions of the story as well. Some say it was not the owner’s suicide but a family suicide. Others claim a guest died by suicide there. None of these accounts have been confirmed, and the truth behind the rumors remains unclear.
The site is associated with Inawashiro Town in Yama District, Fukushima Prefecture. If you visit the area, respect private property, posted signs, and local residents, and do not enter abandoned or restricted buildings.
