Aogashima is suddenly drawing attention from travelers overseas. Technically, this island belongs to Tokyo—but it could not feel farther from the city.
Floating in the Pacific Ocean, Aogashima is a volcanic island that truly deserves the phrase “isolated island in the middle of nowhere.” People living on a volcanic island is not unusual by itself. What makes Aogashima so striking is that it is not just any volcano.
A village sits inside one of the world’s rare double calderas. So what kind of island is this mysterious, slightly spine-tingling place?
What Is a Caldera?
A caldera is a large, round depression formed after a volcanic eruption. When a major eruption releases magma from an underground magma chamber, an empty space is left behind. The ground above can then collapse, creating a caldera.
Calderas themselves are not especially rare. Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture and Lake Mashu in Hokkaido are both examples. If water collects in the collapsed area, it can become a caldera lake like Lake Mashu. If it remains dry land, it can create an area surrounded by outer crater walls, as seen at Aso.
Volcanoes are needed to form calderas, and volcanoes are not only found on land. There are also volcanoes beneath the sea. The Kikai Caldera and Aira Caldera are enormous calderas submerged underwater.
Aogashima, however, is especially rare because it is a “double caldera.” Even more unusual, people actually live inside it.
Aogashima is said to have taken its current form after a massive eruption about 3,000 years ago.
In 1785, an eruption struck the island, and because evacuation did not happen in time, around 130 islanders died. Aogashima was once left uninhabited after that tragedy, but people eventually returned and rebuilt their lives there.
In recent years, volcanic activity appears to have been relatively calm. Still, when you remember that the settlement is inside a caldera—almost like living in a crater—it is hard not to feel a chill.
Aogashima also has no sandy beaches. It is surrounded by cliffs about 50 to 200 meters high, its harbor is very small, and the roads around the island are said to be so steep that climbing them by bicycle is difficult.
A Remote Island with a Harsh History
Surrounded by severe natural conditions, Aogashima is also an island whose earliest human settlement is not clearly known.
According to older records, many of the documents connected to Aogashima involve maritime accidents and similar incidents. There was reportedly a period when women were not allowed on the island. The highest recorded population was 754 people in 1881, during the Meiji era.
Since then, the population has continued to decline, but Aogashima has never returned to being an uninhabited island.
What Kind of Place Is Aogashima?
Aogashima is part of Tokyo, but it lies 358.4 kilometers south of central Tokyo, out in the middle of the ocean.
It is the least populated village in Japan and is 68 kilometers away even from the nearest island, Hachijojima. Aogashima has gained international attention after being featured by an American tourism and conservation NGO, as well as by the Smithsonian.
Some time ago, members of a Japanese idol group also visited Aogashima for a TV program.
Looking at photos, anyone with even a casual interest in geography can tell: this place looks unmistakably volcanic. The population is about 175, and the island’s highest point is 423 meters above sea level. Most of the coastline is made up of sheer cliffs, making landing on the island difficult.
Only 423 meters of the volcano rises above the sea, but measured from the seafloor, it is a large volcano more than 1,000 meters tall. In other words, only part of it is visible above the water.
If Aogashima had been a 1,000-meter-class volcano on land instead of an undersea volcano rising out of the ocean, perhaps a village inside its caldera would never have formed in the same way.
Another unusual detail: Aogashima has no street addresses in the ordinary sense. Mail is reportedly delivered using only “Aogashima Village, Tokyo” and the recipient’s name.
Why Does Aogashima Fascinate People?
Even though Aogashima belongs to Tokyo, it is an isolated island far out at sea—and now it is drawing attention from around the world.
Its rare double-caldera landscape and media coverage are major reasons, of course. But one of the things that may make Aogashima even more compelling is how difficult it is to reach.
To get there, travelers must go from Hachijojima by ferry or helicopter. The ferry has a very low operation rate, and if the sea is rough, it cannot depart. When bad weather continues, cancellations lasting a week are not unusual. That means Aogashima is hard to reach—and once you land, it may also be hard to leave.
The other option is the helicopter, but it has only nine seats. With Aogashima receiving more attention, reservations are reportedly filled more than a month in advance.
The fact that it is so hard to visit may be part of what makes it feel so rare.
Aogashima also has another great attraction: a sky full of stars. With almost no nearby light sources, visitors can see the night sky from the middle of the dark Pacific Ocean.
The island is also known for Aochu, a local shochu that is considered extremely rare.
If you plan to visit, check official transportation and weather information carefully, book well ahead, and do not approach cliffs, restricted areas, or rough seas. Aogashima’s isolation is part of its beauty, but it also means conditions can change quickly.

今、外国の観光客から注目されているある島があります。その島は東京都に属していますが、決して都会ではありません。太平洋に浮かぶ火山島の「青ヶ島」で、絶海の孤島という言葉がぴったりの場所です。火山島に人が住んでいる…という場所は決して珍しいものではないのですが、この青ヶ島の凄いところはただの火山島ではないというところです。世界でも珍しい「二重カルデラ」の中に集落がある！神秘的でゾクゾクする青ヶ島はどんな島なのでしょうか。。画像 Wikipedia 。
カルデラってそもそもなに?。。カルデラとは、火山が噴火した後にできる円形のくぼみの事です。大規模な火山の噴火でマグマだまりのマグマが外に排出されると、マグマだまりに空洞ができます。その空洞が陥没してできるのがカルデラです。カルデラ自体は決して珍しいものではなく、熊本県の阿蘇や北海道の摩周湖などもカルデラです。陥没したところに水が溜まると摩周湖のようなカルデラ湖になりますし、水がたまらずに陸として残ると阿蘇のような外輪山に囲まれた土地が生まれます。
カルデラの形成には火山と火山の噴火が必要なのですが、火山は陸だけではなく海底にもあります。鬼界カルデラや姶良カルデラは海に沈む巨大カルデラです。ですが、青ヶ島を取り上げるのはこのカルデラの中でもレア度が高い「二重カルデラ」と呼ばれるカルデラ！この神秘の島の珍しいところは二重カルデラの中に集落があって人が住んでいるというところなんです。。国土交通省「国土画像情報（カラー空中写真）」（配布元：国土地理院地図・空中写真閲覧サービス） 。青ヶ島は今から3000年前の巨大噴火で今の形になったといわれています。
1785年には噴火が発生して避難が間に合わなかったため130人もの島民がなくなるという悲劇も起こりました。そして、一度は市無人島になったわけですが、また、青ヶ島に戻って生活を始めて今に至ります。近年の火山活動は穏やかなようですが、カルデラの中に集落が…というか火口に住んでいるようなものですから、そう考えるとちょっとぞくっとしてしまいます。ちなみに青ヶ島には砂浜はなく50メートルから200メートルの段階に囲まれていて、船着場のとても小さく島の周囲の道は自転車上るのは難しいといわれるほど急峻です。
厳しい自然に囲まれた青ヶ島は、いつから人が住むようになったのか解っていない島でもあります。古い資料では青ヶ島に関係する記録のほとんどが海難事故などだそう。昔は女人禁制だった時代もあるそうですが、最も人口が多かった記録は 明治14年の人口754人でした。それから人口は減り続けていますが、無人島にならずに今に至っています。。参考資料 気象庁ホームページ 。青ヶ島ってどんなところなの?。青ヶ島は、東京都ですが東京の都心からは358.4km南方の海の真ん中に浮かぶ島です。
日本で一番人口が少ない村で、一番近い八丈島からも68kmも離れています。アメリカの観光保護NGOの記事やスミソニアン博物館が青ヶ島を紹介したことで今、世界的に注目されています。。もうかなり前の事ですが、アイドルグループのメンバーが番組の企画で青ヶ島を訪れていたこともありました。青ヶ島は写真を見たら解る通り、ちょっと地理が好きという方なら「あ、火山だ」と解るくらい火山らしい形をしています。人口は175人で最高標高は423 mですが、島のほとんどが断崖絶壁で上陸も容易ではありません。

。東京都にありながら、絶海の孤島の青ヶ島ですが今、世界中から注目されています。二重カルデラという珍しい地形や、メディアで取り上げられたことももちろんその大きな理由ですが、青ヶ島の魅力をさらに高めているもの、それは「アクセスの悪さ」にあるのではないでしょうか。青ヶ島に行く方法は、八丈島からのフェリーやヘリコプターです。フェリーは就航率がとても低く、海が荒れると出航できません。一度、海が荒れると一週間決行することも珍しくなので、なかなか行けないし、一度上陸したらなかなか帰れないのです。
もう一つのほうほうのヘリコプターですがね座席は9つだけ。そして、今、青ヶ島が注目されている影響で一か月以上先の予約も埋まっているそうです。なかなか行けない…ということはそれだけレア度が高いということ。その行きにくさがより青ヶ島に人が注目する理由になっているようにも思えます。。そして、青ヶ島の大きな魅力。それは、満点の星空です。近くに光源がないので真っ暗な太平洋の真ん中で満点の星空を見ることができるのです。青ヶ島の名産品の 青酎という焼酎は超がつくレアものです。
