Kyushu University Vivisection Incident: Were “Artificial Blood” Experiments Performed on POWs?
目次

English Version

The Kyushu University Vivisection Incident refers to human experiments carried out in 1945, while Japan was fighting World War II, at the medical school of Kyushu Imperial University in Fukuoka City—today’s Kyushu University.

Because there is little physical evidence and much of what is known comes from testimony, the case remains one of the most disturbing wartime incidents associated with Japan.

Vivisection means dissection or surgery performed while the subject is still alive. In this case, the subjects were American prisoners of war.

The American servicemen were crew members of a B-29 that had flown to bomb Fukuoka and other areas in May 1945. The aircraft was shot down by the Japanese military near the border between Kumamoto and Oita prefectures, and the surviving crew members were taken prisoner.

There were nine survivors from the downed plane. The captain was transferred to Tokyo, while the remaining eight were reportedly sent to Kyushu Imperial University after it was decided they would be used for vivisection experiments.

According to accounts, because they were being taken to a hospital, the eight POWs believed they were going to receive a medical examination and even expressed thanks. What awaited them was not treatment, but experiments carried out with no intention of preserving their lives.

It is also said that the experiments were conducted in place of execution by firing squad.

The eight men identified as victims were:

  • Second Lieutenant William F. Frederick
  • Second Lieutenant Dale Plambeck
  • Second Lieutenant George M. Bailey
  • Sergeant Billy J. Brown
  • Sergeant Teddy Dengler
  • Sergeant Charles Palmer
  • Sergeant Robert B. Williams
  • Sergeant John C. Colehower

All eight died. In total, the vivisections were carried out four times, costing eight lives.

At a time when modern diagnostic machines and medical technology did not exist as they do today, some doctors may have seen live human experimentation as a conflict between medical curiosity and ethics. Even so, the result was horrifying.

Before Kyushu University relocated its old Fukuoka campus, some students reportedly whispered that ghosts appeared around the medical school. Perhaps, some said, the resentment of the prisoners dissected while still alive had never left.

What Experiments Were Reportedly Performed?

According to accounts cited in connection with the case, the experiments included:

  • Injecting diluted seawater into blood vessels
  • Removing part of a lung
  • Stopping the heart
  • Removing organs such as parts of the brain or liver
  • Testing how much blood loss would cause a person to die

These procedures were reportedly performed while the prisoners were alive.

The POWs, who had believed they were going to receive a medical checkup, were instead used as experimental subjects. The “operations” were carried out by a team centered on doctors who were considered authorities in the medical world, and the intended experimental goals were achieved.

Some doctors who took part were allegedly not told in advance that the procedures would be vivisections.

The “Artificial Blood” Experiment

One of the experiments associated with the Kyushu University Vivisection Incident involved what was described as artificial blood. In wartime Japan, where blood was in short supply, the idea of creating an artificial substitute was considered important—not only for medicine, but also for the military.

However, there was no true artificial blood. In the reported experiment, diluted seawater was used instead.

The seawater was injected into the body of a living human being. Of course, seawater could not function as a substitute for blood, and the prisoner died.

A nurse who witnessed the experiment later testified that about 500 cc of seawater was injected into the prisoner’s arm. The prisoner was still alive at the time, but died about ten minutes later.

During questioning by GHQ, the exchange was recorded as follows:

> GHQ investigator: Was that operation necessary? > > Chief Nurse Shizuko Tsutsui: I do not think it was necessary. The operation was to see how much blood loss would cause a human being to die.

After Japan’s defeat, Professor Fukujiro Ishiyama, one of the planners, died by suicide in prison. Others involved in the case were later released through postwar amnesties.

The investigation also brought to light an alleged cannibalism case connected to the same broader incident, but that is a separate story.

For travelers and horror fans interested in this history, remember that Kyushu University is a real institution and an active academic community. If visiting sites connected with wartime history, follow campus rules, avoid restricted areas, and treat the subject with respect.
