Have you heard of the abandoned site known as Corolla Sanso in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture? Deep in the mountains, it was once a treatment and retreat facility for people with mental illness. Among fans of haunted places in Japan, it became well known, and even the popular YouTuber Hajime Shacho is said to have visited.
Over the years, dark rumors gathered around the site: that patients were abused there, that bodies were buried on the grounds, and that the ghosts of those who died still appeared. Because several religious-looking statues once stood around the property, some people also claimed it may actually have been a religious facility.
So what was Corolla Sanso really? Here is the history behind the ruins, the rumors that made it famous, and what appears to be the truth.
Rumors of Patient Spirits at Corolla Sanso
As mentioned above, Corolla Sanso was an abandoned facility in the mountains of Hachinohe, Aomori. It was originally connected to the care and treatment of people with mental illness, but the stories told about it became increasingly disturbing.
According to rumor, patients were abused on a regular basis, and some even died. Some versions of the story claim that patients were killed with the consent of their families, and that many bodies were buried in the nearby forest.
Visitors to the abandoned buildings reportedly saw barred windows, with some openings boarded up from the outside. This led people to wonder whether violent patients had once been locked inside.
Because of these details, Corolla Sanso became known as a haunted spot where the spirits of deceased patients were said to appear. Hajime Shacho, the popular YouTuber, also visited the site and reportedly said that he heard voices even though no one should have been there.
Other alleged paranormal experiences at Corolla Sanso included:
- Seeing a human face behind the iron bars
- Hearing someone’s voice
- Bodies of dead patients rising from the ground at night
- Being chased by the ghost of an old woman with a sickle, known as “Jet Babaa”
- Contracting an incurable illness because of a curse
They are all frightening stories, but the last one is especially unsettling. If true, it would be enough to keep people away even without any ghosts involved.
This rumor may have come from a sign that was once reportedly posted on the road leading to Corolla Sanso, warning that there was a risk of infection ahead. According to one version of the legend, too many bodies had been buried in the forest, causing an infectious disease to spread.
The Strange Statues and the Religious Facility Rumor
The stories surrounding Corolla Sanso did not stop there. Several statues and objects once stood on the grounds, half-buried in vegetation. They included figures resembling the Buddha, demons, a headless Jizo statue, and elephants. Even in daylight, they must have looked eerie to anyone who did not know their background.
These objects were actually connected to Indian religious imagery. In Indian Buddhism, elephant deities are well known. The name Corolla Sanso is also said to come from Karura, a deity of Indian origin, and the site is sometimes referred to as Karura Sanso.
Because of this, another rumor spread: that the story of it being a psychiatric facility was only a cover, and that it was actually operated as a religious facility by an Indian-style new religious group.
However, the claims about abuse, murder, and the site secretly being a religious cult facility appear to be baseless rumors.
The Real History of Corolla Sanso
Corolla Sanso had a history of more than half a century. It was founded in 1964 by a psychiatrist named Dr. Chiba as a medical facility for the treatment of mental illness.
Dr. Chiba was also known as the founder of Seinan Hospital, now one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Aomori Prefecture, and he had a very good reputation as a doctor.
At the time, psychiatric treatment often relied heavily on large amounts of medication. Many patients reportedly suffered serious mental and physical side effects as a result.
Dr. Chiba wanted to change that situation. At Corolla Sanso, he promoted treatment that did not depend on medication, focusing instead on art therapy, occupational therapy, and daily-life therapy.
The Indian Buddhist-inspired art, dance, and yoga used at the facility were believed to help open the mind and improve psychiatric symptoms. The religious-looking objects that now seem unsettling in photographs were originally created with a meaningful purpose as part of this art therapy approach.
Dr. Chiba’s methods gained attention and were introduced by NHK and in many books. Artists such as the musician Kitaro and the dancer Mitsutaka Ishii are also said to have visited and drawn inspiration from the place.
There were no confirmed incidents of abuse or murder, and no infectious disease outbreak is known to have occurred.
After Dr. Chiba’s death, Corolla Sanso was no longer used as a treatment facility and gradually fell into ruin. Most likely, the simple fact that it was a mountain facility for psychiatric patients gave rise to unfounded stories about isolation, abuse, and massacre.
That said, the abandoned statues would certainly look disturbing to someone who stumbled upon them without knowing the history.
Can You Visit Corolla Sanso Today?
Because many haunted-spot enthusiasts and YouTubers visited Corolla Sanso, the site has since been demolished, and entry is prohibited.
Do not attempt to visit or enter the former site. Doing so may be trespassing, and abandoned or restricted locations can be dangerous.
Corolla Sanso became famous as one of Aomori’s haunted ruins, but the most horrifying rumors about it do not appear to be based on fact. There was no confirmed dark history of abuse, murder, or mass burial, and it is unlikely that any ghosts appear there.
Still, Aomori Prefecture is home to many strange histories, eerie legends, and unsettling local traditions. Among occult fans, places and stories such as Warasu-gawara, associated with famine, child-killing, and even cannibalism; the legend of the Tomb of Christ in Aomori; the haunted temple known as Kudoji; and Mount Hakkoda, where nearly 200 people went missing or died during a disastrous winter military march, are all well known.

。実際に廃墟に行くと、窓には 鉄格子 がなされ、外から 木板 を打ちつけれれているところもあります。暴れる患者を閉じ込めていたのでしょうか？。こういった理由から、カローラ山荘には死亡した患者たちの霊が出没するといわれ、心霊スポットとして有名になりました。あの人気YouTuberの はじめしゃちょー も訪れたことがあり、 「誰もいないはずなのに声が聞こえた」 と語っています。 。カローラ山荘の心霊体験には他に次のようなものがあります。鉄格子の奥に人の顔が見える 誰かの声が聞こえる 夜になると亡くなった患者の死体が土中からよみがえる 「ジェットババァ」というカマを持った老婆の霊が追いかけてくる 呪いによって不治の病に感染する どれも恐ろしいですね。

これらは実はすべて、 インドの宗教オブジェ なんですね。インド仏教では、ゾウの神様が有名です。さらに「カローラ山荘」という名前も、 「迦楼羅（カルラ）」 というインドの神様からきており、そのため「迦楼羅山荘」とも呼ばれます。こういった理由から、「精神病の施設というのは建前で、インドの新興宗教団体が運営する 宗教施設 なのではないか？」とも噂されました。。。しかし、これらの精神病患者への虐待や殺人、まして宗教施設などという噂はすべて 事実無根のデマ です。
。次からはカローラ山荘の歴史と、その正体をお話します。【心霊スポット？】カローラ山荘の歴史と正体。カローラ山荘には、実は 半世紀以上もの歴史 があります。創立は1964年。精神科医の千葉氏によって、精神病の医療施設として開かれました。千葉氏は、現在青森県で最も規模の大きい精神病院 「青南病院」 の創立者として有名な、 非常に評判のいい 医者でした。。当時の精神病の治療といえば、 とにかく薬を大量に投与する しかなく、その副作用として 精神や肉体を壊した 者も数多くいたといいます。
そこで千葉氏は、そんな精神病界に風穴を開けるべく、 「芸術療法・作業療法・生活療法」 を基本にした 薬に頼らない治療 をはじめます。そのために作られたのが、カローラ山荘でした。インド仏教による芸術（ダンスやヨガ）には精神を開放し、精神病の症状を改善させる効能が知られていました。。。今でこそ壊れかけて不気味な 宗教的なオブジェ も、すべて芸術療法のために作られた意味のあるものでした。千葉氏の目指した芸術療法は評判を呼び、 NHK や多くの本でも紹介されました。
ミュージシャンの 喜多郎氏 や舞踏家の 石井満隆氏 などの芸術家も訪れ、インスピレーションを得たといいます。もちろん虐待や殺人などの事件もありませんし、感染症が発生したこともありません。。千葉氏の死後は治療施設として使われることはなくなり、やがて廃墟になってしまいました。おそらくは 山奥に建てられた精神病患者の施設 という情報から、隔離や虐待、虐殺といった根も葉もない噂が生まれてしまったのでしょう。まぁ実際、捨てられた石像はなにも知らない人が見たら、だれもが不気味に感じるとは思いますが……。
。ちなみに心霊スポットマニアやYouTuberが多く訪れたことで、このカローラ山荘は現在は取り壊され、立ち入りも禁じられています。。不法侵入 になるので、行くことは絶対にやめましょう。。今回は心霊スポットとして有名な青森県の廃墟、カローラ山荘について紹介しました。しかし噂にあるようなおぞましい歴史や事件はなく、すべて事実無根のデマでした。当然、霊も現れないと思われます。とはいえ青森県には、不思議な歴史や恐ろしい風習がいくつも残っているのも事実です。
