In Nokanan, Higashikawa Town, Kamikawa District, Hokkaido, there is said to be a cemetery connected to Chinese laborers who were forcibly brought to Japan and made to endure harsh working conditions. Many are believed to have died there, and the place has become the subject of local ghost stories.
According to rumor, the spirit of a young girl has been seen crying while clutching a grave marker. Another story tells of a male ghost that chases people on all fours.
There is also said to be a grave whose inscription should not be read. Some claim that anyone who reads the writing will be cursed.
Whether these stories are folklore, warnings, or expressions of lingering grief, the atmosphere surrounding the cemetery is tied to a painful history. The dead are said to be people who could not let go of their regrets in this world, and some believe their spirits still appear from time to time.
If you visit areas like this, treat them as places of mourning and historical memory. Do not disturb graves, enter restricted land, or visit in a way that would trouble local residents.
