Movies of every kind are released in Japan, and in recent years titles like Joker, centered on Batman’s eternal rival, have become major talking points. The film industry is full of strange and fascinating stories, but this time we’re looking at one of its most famous mysteries: Alan Smithee.
Film fans may already know the name. For a time, Alan Smithee appeared to be a mysterious American film director with an unusually troubled career.
A mysterious director praised by critics
In 1969, the American film Death of a Gunfighter was released and received positive attention from critics. The credited director was Alan Smithee.
At the time, many critics seem to have believed he was a real person. Even The New York Times reportedly praised Alan Smithee in its comments on the film.
After that, the name appeared on works such as Let’s Get Harry, Catchfire, and Hellraiser: Bloodline. Little by little, Alan Smithee seemed to be building a career as a director who would leave his mark on film history.
The director who disappeared in 2000
As the name became better known, however, film fans began to ask a suspicious question: Was Alan Smithee even real?
Many of the films credited to him were connected to behind-the-scenes trouble. Because of that, some movie lovers began to suspect that the name was not a person at all, but a pseudonym used when people involved with a production did not want to take responsibility.
A film about Alan Smithee himself was eventually made, and after Woman Wanted, the name stopped being used. It is also said that a lawsuit connected to the Alan Smithee credit helped bring an end to its use.
Why was this “faceless director” created?
So why was a director with no face created in the first place?
During the production of Death of a Gunfighter, the lead actor and the director clashed, and the director was replaced partway through filming. After the movie was completed, neither director wanted to take responsibility for the final version.
That is when the fake name Alan Smithee was used.
Over time, the name spread beyond movies and began appearing in places such as books and television dramas as well.
Where did the name come from?
The name Alan Smithee was decided through discussions between the Directors Guild of America and the producers.
The producers first suggested the pseudonym “Al Smith,” but the guild rejected it because there was already a director with that name. The guild then suggested “Allen Smith,” but that was also dropped because it sounded too common and might overlap with the name of a real future director.
In the end, they settled on Alan Smithee: a name that sounded plausible, but not too likely to belong to an actual person.
Because the name did not stand out in a strange way, it worked as intended at first. Critics, and even major newspapers, treated Alan Smithee as a real director. The producers avoided having anyone directly carry the blame.
After Alan Smithee vanished
After Alan Smithee disappeared from film credits around 2000, other pseudonyms began to be used instead.
The name also had an influence on Japanese anime. Names that seem to allude to Alan Smithee have appeared in series such as Kochikame: Tokyo Beat Cops, KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!, and Joker Game.
In the 2015 Japanese film Initiation Love, a similar-sounding name was also used as a way to deliberately hide a main cast member.
Were some Alan Smithee films considered terrible?
Because the name was so often attached to troubled productions, several Alan Smithee films have been called bad movies.
One especially infamous example is An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn from 1997. As the title suggests, the movie is directly about Alan Smithee. It features major names such as Sylvester Stallone, Jackie Chan, and Whoopi Goldberg, yet it has been described as one of the worst films in American movie history.
It went on to win five Golden Raspberry Awards, earning the unpleasant honor of being remembered as one of the worst movies of the 1990s.
Another complicated example is Dune from 1984, directed by David Lynch. The film became a topic of discussion partly because of Lynch’s involvement. When it was re-edited for television in 1994, trouble arose, and the Alan Smithee name was used.
Opinions on Dune are sharply divided. Some people consider it a worthwhile film, while others call it a failure. It is also famous in another way: Alejandro Jodorowsky, the director behind strange and distinctive films such as El Topo and The Holy Mountain, had once tried and failed to make his own version of Dune.
Jodorowsky himself reportedly said that Lynch’s Dune was so terrible that it made him happy.
Could your favorite movie be credited to a fake name?
Alan Smithee is no longer used as an official pseudonym, but the faceless director left a strong influence on both film and anime culture.
Today, different pseudonyms may be used in similar situations. So it is possible that the director credited on one of your favorite movies is not quite who they appear to be.

」と考えるように。実際にアラン・スミシーを題材にした映画も制作されており、その結果「美しき家政婦 ウーマン・ウォンテッド」を最後に使われなくなりました。また、アラン・スミシーという名義に関する裁判が起きてしまったことも使われなくなったきっかけとされています。顔のない映画監督が生まれた理由。そもそも、なぜアラン・スミシーという顔のない映画監督がうまれたのでしょうか。「ガンファイターの最後」という映画では主演と映画監督の意見が対立してしまい、撮影途中で映画監督が交代。
完成後、どちらの映画監督も責任を背負いたくなかったために、アラン・スミシーという偽名を使うことになりました。いつの間にか映画だけではなく、本やドラマにまで使われるようになってしまいました。偽名の由来は協会と製作者の話し合いから。。アラン・スミシーという名前は、全米監督協会と製作者の話し合いによって決められました。製作者はアル・スミスという偽名を提案したものの、実際に同じ名前の監督がいるという理由で協会が却下。一方で協会が提案したアレン・スミスは、ありがちな名前だったが故に、今後現れる監督と名前が被る恐れがあるとしてボツに。
最終的に、ありそうでなさそうな名前であるアラン・スミシーになりました。変に目立ちにくい名前だったため、当初は予想通り批評家やニューヨーク・タイムズを騙すことに成功。製作者は思惑通り責任を背負わずに済んだのです。トラブルを背負い続けた偽名が消えた今。アラン・スミシーが消えた2000年以降、映画ではアラン・スミシー以外の異なる偽名が使われるようになりました。また、この偽名は日本のアニメに影響を及ぼしており、「こちら葛飾区亀有公園前派出所」や「この素晴らしい世界に祝福を！
」、「ジョーカー・ゲーム」などの様々なアニメでアラン・スミシーと思わせるような人名が登場しています。また、2015年に日本で公開された「イニシエーション・ラブ」ではメインキャストをわざと隠す目的で名前に似た人名を使っています。アラン・スミシーが撮影した映画は駄作も？。。トラブルを背負い続けたアラン・スミシーの映画には、駄作と呼ばれるものがいくつかあります。映画史における最低の映画「アラン・スミシー・フィルム」（1997年）。「アラン・スミシー・フィルム」は、題名通りアラン・スミシーを主題とした映画。
シルヴェスター・スタローンやジャッキー・チェン、ウーピー・ゴールドバーグなどの大物が出演しているのですが、アメリカの映画史に残る最低の作品と評されています。結果として、最低の映画に遅れるゴールデンラズベリー賞を5部門受賞。1990年代における最低の映画という嫌な名誉を与えられてしまいました。良作か駄作か「デューン/砂の惑星」（1984）。「デューン/砂の惑星」は、デヴィット・リンチが監督を務めたことで話題になった映画。SF作品であり、1994年にTV版で再編集されたときにトラブルが起きてしまったため、アラン・スミシーが使われています。
この映画は、人によって評価が分かれやすく、良作と言う人もいれば、駄作と言う人もいます。また、この映画は「エル・トポ」や「ホーリーマウンテン」といった独特な映画を生み出してきたアレハンドロ・ホドロフスキーが作れなかった映画としての一面も。ただ、ホドロフスキー自身は「デューン/砂の惑星」に対して「あまりのひどさにうれしくなった」という発言をしています。好きな映画の監督は偽名かも？。今回は、顔のない映画監督「アラン・スミシー」について紹介しました。
