Cannibalism is now treated as one of society’s ultimate taboos, but throughout history it has not always been viewed in exactly the same way. In some historical accounts, human bones or flesh were used in traditional medicine in China, and there are also stories that monks consumed part of the body of Thomas Aquinas, the Christian theologian, after his death.
Within that long and disturbing history of cannibalism, some stories remain difficult to separate from rumor and legend. One of the most infamous is the tale of Sawney Bean, sometimes rendered in Japanese as Sonny Bean, a supposed cannibal from Scotland whose story may or may not be true.
The brutal case said to have shaken Scotland
The story is set in the 15th century, around the beginning of the Age of Discovery. According to the legend, Scotland was troubled for 25 years by a series of terrifying disappearances. Many people vanished, and because the culprit could not be found, innocent people were sometimes arrested by mistake.
Eventually, the authorities are said to have captured the man behind the crimes: Sawney Bean.
The growing Bean family
According to the legend, Sawney Bean was born in Scotland in the late 14th century. He was said to have had a naturally violent personality and to have hated work, eventually running away from home.
During that time, he met a woman, and the two began living together in a cave. From there, they allegedly attacked people who passed nearby, killing them and stealing their money and belongings.
The woman gave birth to 14 children. Those children, through incest, had even more children, and the family eventually grew to more than 40 members. As the family became larger, finding enough food supposedly became difficult.
That, the legend says, is when Sawney Bean and his family crossed into the forbidden act of cannibalism.
A cannibal family that became terrifyingly efficient
Because Sawney Bean and his family are said to have continued murder and cannibalism for more than 25 years, the story describes them as becoming frighteningly skilled at what they did.
When they attacked, they allegedly killed efficiently and left no evidence behind. The bodies were then carefully dismembered inside the cave and prepared as food.
Despite being a large family, they supposedly survived by working together with extraordinary coordination, which allowed them to avoid being discovered for many years.
But that life could not continue forever. According to the tale, one man managed to escape an attack by the Bean family and reported what had happened to the authorities in Scotland. That report finally led to the case being solved.
The fate of the captured family
The crime was considered so horrific that, according to the legend, Sawney Bean and his family were executed without a trial.
The male members of the family were reportedly punished by having their hands and feet cut off, causing them to bleed to death. The female members were said to have been burned.
Another grim detail in the story claims that when the children were found, they already knew how to kill and process human bodies, but could barely speak.
Was Sawney Bean real?
As shocking as the story is, many people today believe the Sawney Bean case may not have been a real historical event. Even Wikipedia describes him as a legendary figure rather than a confirmed criminal.
So why do so many people doubt the story?
1. The story appeared much later
If a crime this extreme had really taken place in the 15th century, it would not be strange to expect some kind of record from that period. However, the story first seems to have appeared in the 19th century.
It was introduced in a book by a person named John Nicholson, in a work known in Japanese as Lowland Old Tales. According to the legend, even King James I of Scotland was involved in the case, sending hundreds of soldiers to capture the culprits.
If the king and hundreds of soldiers were truly connected to such a massive incident, the lack of earlier records is suspicious. That is one major reason the story is often considered false.
On the other hand, some people argue that the crime was so horrific that it may have been kept secret in Scotland at the time.
2. The details are extremely vague
There are also many unclear points in the story of Sawney Bean and his family. The number of victims is especially uncertain. Some versions claim the family attacked around 30 people, while others say the number was as high as 1,500.
If documents from the 15th century existed, those numbers might be easier to narrow down. But as mentioned above, information about Sawney Bean does not appear in known 15th-century books or official records.
With so many vague details, it becomes difficult to say confidently that the incident really happened.
Legend or truth?
The gruesome tale of Sawney Bean and his family spread far beyond Scotland, and today it remains one of the most famous stories associated with cannibalism.
But whether it was based on a real event or grew from rumor, folklore, and fear may never be known for certain.

。ソニー・ビーンは、14世紀後半にスコットランドで生まれました。根っから暴力的な性格 であり、 労働を嫌って家出。。その際に知り合った女性と、洞窟で暮らす ようになりました。彼らは 洞窟の前を通る人々を次々と殺して、金品を略奪。。。その傍らで女は 14人の子供を出産 。そしてその 子供たちは近親相姦によって更に子供を増やし、40人以上の大家族 になりました。しかし、あまりにも 家族が増えすぎてしまったために、食料の調達が困難 に。その結果として、ソニー・ビーンと その家族はカニバリズムという禁断の行為に手を出す こととなったのです。
プロフェッショナルと化した食人家族。。ソニー・ビーンとその家族は、25年以上殺人とカニバリズムを行ってきたために、無駄のない動きへと変貌していました。襲う際には 証拠を残さず効率良く殺し、丁寧に洞窟で解体。。その後、食料として食べられるように加工されていました。。大家族でありながら 抜群のチームワークを生かした生活を行っていたために、警察からすぐに見つかることなく生活できました。。ただ、そんな生活は永遠に続くことはなく、ソニー・ビーンとその家族からの 襲撃から逃げ切れた男性がスコットランドにある役所に報告したことがきっかけで、事件が解決 することに。
大家族による食人生活は、一回のミスによって崩壊してしまいました。逮捕された食人家族の顛末。。あまりにも凶悪すぎる事件だったために、裁判が行われることなく、 ソニー・ビーンとその家族は処刑 されました。処刑方法は家族の 男子は両手両足を切断して失血死 、 女子は火炙り に。ちなみに、見つかった時に子どもたちは 殺人や人肉の加工技術を持っていたものの、言葉に関してはほとんど話せませんでした。。ソニー・ビーンは嘘の人物？。。事件自体は凶悪なものですが、現在では嘘の事件ではないかという声が多く挙がっており、無数の情報を無料で調べられるWikipediaでも「伝説」と表現しています。
しかし、なぜソニー・ビーンは嘘の人物と言われているのでしょうか。1.事件が発表されたのが19世紀。。ここまで 凶悪な犯罪であれば15世紀の資料に書かれてもおかしくないものの、なぜが歴史において最初に紹介されたのは19世紀。。ジョン・ニコルソンと名乗る人物が書いた「ローランドの昔話」という本で、初めて紹介されたのです。この事件では15世紀のスコットランド国王であるジェームス1世も関与しているどころか、犯人逮捕のために数百人の兵士を向かわせています。
これほど大きな事件がなぜ19世紀まで発表されなかったのは非常に怪しく、嘘である可能性も。ただ、あまりにも凶悪すぎるゆえに、当時のスコットランドで秘密にされていたという意見もあります。。2.非常に曖昧な情報。。ソニー・ビーンとその家族が起こした事件には、曖昧な部分が数多くあります。特に襲った人数が非常に曖昧 であり、30人程度と考える人もいれば1500人襲ったと考える人もいます。当時の資料があればもう少し絞り込めますが、上記で述べたとおり ソニー・ビーンに関する情報は、15世紀の書物や公文書などに記載されていません。
