Locals know this place by the unsettling nickname Kubikari Shrine, or “the head-hunting shrine.” The actual site is Sengen Shrine Fujisha in Suse-cho, Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture.
According to rumor, anyone who steps on the first and third steps of the shrine stairs will be cursed. Another story says that if a group climbs the stairs in a single-file line, the person at the very back will have their head taken.
The nickname is said to come from an old tale about travelers passing along a nearby slope. In the story, bandits attacked them, cut off their heads, and left them there. Because of that incident, people supposedly began calling the place Kubikari Shrine, though whether this story is true is unclear.
There is also a separate rumor that this area was once an execution ground.
If you visit, remember that this is a real shrine and a local neighborhood site. Stay on public paths, respect the grounds, and do not enter restricted areas.
