Tanagagumui is said to be haunted at night by the spirits of people who drowned there.
The name is said to come from the local words for a place where long-armed shrimp gather: “tanagaa” meaning long-armed shrimp, and “gumui” meaning a pool or basin.
By day, it is reportedly a beautiful spot for enjoying Okinawa’s untouched nature. Even so, the area has a darker reputation: people are said to have continued drowning there over the years. Some wonder, at least in rumor, whether the spirits of the drowned are calling in more victims.
Tanagagumui is located in Aha, Kunigami Village, Kunigami District, Okinawa Prefecture. If you visit natural pools, rivers, or waterfalls in Okinawa, go in daylight, check local conditions, obey posted warnings, and avoid entering the water when it is unsafe.
