Kyowa Tunnel: A Short but Eerie Haunted Spot on the Akita Expressway

Mount Kuromata Pyramid: Akita’s Mysterious Japanese Pyramid With a Hidden Hollow

English Version

Kyowa Tunnel is said to be associated with a few unsettling rumors. Drivers have claimed that, once inside, the exit feels strangely hard to reach. Others say hands seem to reach out from the red lines painted along the tunnel walls. Another story claims that, while driving through, the rear seat of a car may suddenly be found wet.

Kyowa Tunnel is the only four-lane tunnel on the Akita Expressway. The downhill lanes use the newer tunnel, while the uphill lanes use the older one. At about 540 meters long, it is relatively short, which makes the stories about not reaching the exit feel even more unusual.

Details behind these rumors are unclear, and they should be treated as local ghost stories rather than confirmed events.

The tunnel is located on the Akita Expressway in Daisen, Akita Prefecture. Because it is part of an active expressway, travelers should not stop, walk inside, or attempt to investigate it on foot. If you pass through, do so safely and follow all traffic rules.
