Old Yutō Tunnel: A Disused Hand-Carved Haunt in Tsuruoka, Yamagata

The Clairvoyance Incident Behind Ring: Chizuko Mifune and Japan’s Real-Life Psychic Scandal

English Version

The Old Yutō Tunnel is an abandoned, hand-carved tunnel in Yutō, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, near Prefectural Route 50.

Rumors say that a white hand appears from inside the tunnel. Others claim that as you get closer, you may feel as if someone is watching you.

Today, the tunnel is no longer in use. Rather than a modern road tunnel, it is said to feel more like a cave cut into the hillside by hand. Beyond that, little is clearly known about its history or the origins of the stories surrounding it.

If you visit the area, treat it with caution. Abandoned tunnels can be unstable, unsafe, or off-limits, and access conditions may change. Do not enter restricted areas or trespass; view the site only from safe, legal public locations.
