Among the nobles who fought alongside Joan of Arc, Gilles de Rais was praised so highly for his military achievements that he was called a hero who helped save France. We have introduced him before as one of Joan’s comrades, but among the nobles of that era, few seem to have been as deeply affected by losing her.
After Joan was captured, Gilles de Rais’s actions and private life appear to have drifted into madness. France was in chaos at the time, and many once-powerful figures fell from grace. Even so, the crimes attributed to Gilles de Rais were on a different scale.
Here, we look at the fall of Gilles de Rais and the man said to have been lurking in the shadows. What turned a celebrated hero into a murderer?
After Joan of Arc Was Captured
Gilles de Rais fought with Joan of Arc from the liberation of Orléans to the failed siege of Paris. He is said to have been utterly captivated by her role in the dramatic victory at Orléans.
But the siege of Paris ended in failure, and when Joan was later taken prisoner by the Burgundians, Gilles’s behavior began to change. For him, Joan of Arc may have become something like a guiding light.
If he truly believed she was a messenger of God, her capture by an enemy force must have left him with an overwhelming sense of emptiness. Gilles himself had returned to his own lands shortly after the siege of Paris, so he was not present when Joan was captured.
After his achievements at Orléans and in the campaigns that followed, Gilles de Rais was recognized as Marshal of France at the coronation in Reims. It is difficult to imagine the shock he felt when the sacred figure who had inspired that rise was taken.
After Joan became a prisoner, Gilles reportedly attacked lands under the direction of La Trémoille, a close adviser of Charles VII who had originally been ordered to keep watch over him. In May 1431, while Joan was being held, Gilles is also said to have launched an attack toward Rouen with the aim of rescuing her.
But his main activity soon became reckless spending. In particular, he is said to have become obsessed with the success of alchemy. The person who approached him during this period was François Prelati, a priest who presented himself as an alchemist.
The Descent Into Murder
The reason Gilles de Rais later came to be linked by some to the Bluebeard legend was the black magic that François Prelati, this self-proclaimed alchemist, is said to have encouraged in the pursuit of alchemical success.
The original reason Gilles wanted alchemy to succeed is uncertain. At first, it may have been no more than an attempt to cover the debts created by his extravagant spending.
But once Gilles became trapped by the idea of alchemy, the self-styled alchemist’s influence allegedly led him further into occult practices. To achieve success, Gilles began using his servants to abduct young boys.
The number of victims has been estimated anywhere from 150 to 1,500. Boys taken by Gilles’s men were reportedly abused and murdered.
His madness may not have been limited to a desire for alchemical success. Some accounts say he came to take pleasure in the abuse itself. Of course, none of these acts ever resulted in successful black magic or alchemy. The man once called a savior of France had become a pleasure killer.
More Spending, More Ruin
In 1432, La Trémoille, who had effectively been Gilles’s feudal superior, fell from power. After that, Gilles had almost no role left at court. He is not thought to have been deeply involved in the political struggles of the time, but with the death of his grandfather and La Trémoille’s fall, his position collapsed further.
His debts continued to grow, and his spending reportedly did not stop.
There are many unanswered questions about why Gilles de Rais spent so much. According to one theory, he sought the philosopher’s stone, the ultimate goal of alchemy, in the hope that it could revive or save Joan of Arc.
Another theory claims that because Joan, a girl who followed God, had been betrayed by God and captured, Gilles came to resent God himself. In that version, he turned to black magic in an attempt to borrow the power of demons.
If that theory is considered, the contradiction is obvious: trying to save Joan of Arc through what would be called devil worship is deeply twisted. It suggests that Gilles’s transformation was far from ordinary.
Seen another way, Joan of Arc may have loomed so large in his mind that losing her helped destroy his personality. Even today, one common explanation for Gilles de Rais’s change is that Joan’s capture triggered a profound mental collapse.
Arrest and Execution
Despite the murders of many boys and his endless spending, Gilles de Rais naturally tried to keep his involvement in black magic, devil worship, and murder hidden from the public.
At the time, the Roman Catholic Church held enormous power in France, as shown by Joan of Arc’s execution as a heretic. In Gilles’s case, however, his crimes had gone far beyond religious accusations alone.
In 1440, during a dispute over land, it was discovered that Gilles had abducted and imprisoned a cleric from Saint-Étienne-de-Mer-Morte. He was accused and arrested.
Behind this incident, there were also claims that John V, Duke of Brittany, had plans to seize Gilles’s lands. By that point, however, such political motives were no longer the central issue.
Gilles was also said to have been connected to the disappearances of boys around 1438, during a period of conflict within the court. His alleged crimes had continued for far too long.
The Bishop of Nantes, sent by the Church, investigated him, and his crimes were revealed through trial. Gilles de Rais is said to have confessed to all of his sins in court and repented.
Because of his repentance, he was spared being burned alive. Instead, he was hanged first and then burned. His life ended at the age of 36.
What Happened to François Prelati?
François Prelati, Gilles de Rais’s accomplice, denied involvement in the crimes during the trial. However, he admitted his connection to black magic and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
He later escaped and became an official in a certain town, but in 1445 he was captured and hanged.
François was also rumored to have been Gilles’s sexual partner, and he was regarded as an extraordinary fraud.
From Hero to Serial Killer
Gilles de Rais’s transformation from national hero to fallen noble and horrific murderer has been retold for centuries. It is so extreme that it almost feels like tragedy, though his mass murders can never be excused.
It is said that the people who watched his execution prayed for the salvation of his soul. In life, he achieved victories worthy of being called heroic, yet he also committed unforgivable acts of sadistic murder.
His crimes will never be justified. Still, considering the way the crowd reportedly behaved after his death, it may be that the people of his time continued to recognize, at least in part, the military achievements he had once made.
