In 1989, a man in New Zealand claimed he was abducted by aliens in the mountains and spent 10 days in an extraterrestrial civilization. His story drew enough attention that he later gave talks in Sydney, Australia. Here is the strange account of Alex Newwald and the mystery surrounding his alleged disappearance.
A Three-Hour Drive That Took 10 Days
In mid-February 1989, Alex Newwald, then in his 40s, was living on New Zealand’s North Island. He was driving from Rotorua, a city known for its hot springs and lakes, toward the major city of Auckland.
The trip should have taken only about three hours. Along the way, he drove through a foggy mountain road and eventually arrived in Auckland.
But something was wrong. According to Newwald, the date was now the following Thursday—10 days after he had set out.
Exhausted and confused, he gradually began to remember what he believed had happened during the missing time. He claimed that while driving to Auckland, he had been taken by aliens and brought to a city belonging to an extraterrestrial civilization.
What He Said He Remembered
Newwald said that as he was driving, his body suddenly began to feel extremely heavy. Soon, he felt paralyzed.
The sensation became so intense that he could no longer press the brake. His car sped toward a cliff, and he believed he was about to die.
In the next moment, he opened his eyes and found himself in a cave-like place filled with neon light. At first, he thought he had died in the crash and entered the afterlife.
He said that in this place, he could move his consciousness freely. Then he felt as if something had touched him. When he looked up, he noticed three beings approaching.
According to Newwald, the beings had round heads. Their eyes and mouths were set lower than a human’s, and he could not see noses or ears. They were about 1.2 meters tall, or roughly four feet.
One of them came closer and spoke to him with the words: “Welcome.”
The Alien City
Newwald said the beings welcomed him and told him they wanted to understand each other better. He claimed the conversation did not happen through spoken language. Instead, it felt as if they were communicating through some kind of energy.
The beings then had him stand on a mysterious machine. He described a strange process in which his body seemed to take form in a way that allowed him to hold objects.
After that, he was guided away by the beings and emerged into a place lined with buildings. He realized, according to his account, that he was looking at an alien city.
He described the city as being filled with structures larger than any buildings on Earth. Some were shaped like pyramids, while others were dome-like, with many different forms throughout the city.
The home where he stayed was said to be circular. Inside, it had a spiral-like structure, and moving forward through it led upward to the higher levels.
For transportation around the city, Newwald said he rode in flying craft with no wings. These vehicles could reportedly be moved and directed simply by thought.
Returning to Earth
After spending 10 days in the alien city, Newwald decided he wanted to return home. When he told the beings, he said they removed his memories of their city and then sent him back to Earth.
After his return, he reportedly spent days confused and afraid, unable to fully understand what had happened. Eventually, he said he managed to recover his memories.
Newwald later wrote about his experience in a book and spoke about it in the media. Even around 30 years after the alleged incident, he continued to tell the story, saying that doing so helped him process a strange experience that had changed his life.
Why had he been shown this civilization? What were the aliens trying to do? According to Newwald, he has continued searching for the answers through the memories he claims to have recovered.

しかし、おかしなことに日付は出発から１０日も過ぎた翌週の木曜日になっていたのです。疲れて混乱していたアレックス・ニューワルドさんは次第に１０日間自分か何をしていたのかを思い出し始めます。大都市オークランドへ向かう際に宇宙人（エイリアン）に連れ去られ、地球外文明の都市に滞在していたことを思い出したのです。連れ去られた時の記憶。。アレックス・ニューワルドさんによると、オークランドへ向かうため運転をしている際、突然体が重くなりはじめ、次第には麻痺まで始まったそうです。
その体の重さと麻痺の強さは、ブレーキが踏めない状態まで陥っていたのです。車は猛スピードで崖へ向かい、死を覚悟したそうです。次の瞬間、アレックス・ニューワルドさんが目を開けると、ネオンライトに満たされた洞窟のような場所にいました。最初は事故で死に死後の世界にでもいると思ったといいます。その場所では意識を自由自在に動かすことができたそうです。すると突然、何かが自分の方にあたる感じがし、 見上げると、３人の宇宙人が近付いてくることに気づいた そうです。
その宇宙人は、頭部は丸く、人間よりも低い場所に目と口があったが、鼻と耳は見当りませんでした。1.2 メートルほどの宇宙人が近付いてきて、アレックス・ニューワルドさんに「ようこそ」と語りかけてきたのです。アレックス・ニューワルドさんが目にしたものとは・・・。。その後、宇宙人はアレックス・ニューワルドさんを歓迎し「お互いをよく知りたい」と話してきました。この会話には言葉は使われず、何かエネルギーのようなものでコミュニケーションをとっている感じだったそうです。
そして、宇宙たちはアレックス・ニューワルドさんを謎のマシンに立たせると、物体を持った体が形成されはじめたのでした。そして、アレックス・ニューワルドさんが宇宙人に先導されるまま移動すると、建物が立ち並ぶ場所へと出たのでした。そこはなんと エイリアンの都市 だったのです。この都市は地球上のどの建物よりも大きく、ピラミッド型やドーム型など、様々な形をした建物があったそうです。アレックス・ニューワルドさんが滞在する家も円形で、内部はらせん状になっていて、進むと上層階につながる構造になっていたそうです。
街の移動では羽のない飛行物体に乗り移動するのですが、その乗りものは考えるだけで動かしたり行き先を決めたりできるものでした。無事地球に帰還。。その宇宙人の都市で１０日間を過ごした、アレックス・ニューワルドさんだが、家へ戻ることを決め、宇宙人に伝えると自分たちの街などに関する記憶はすべて奪い、アレックス・ニューワルドさんを地球へと戻したのでした。記憶を失い混乱する日や恐怖する日が続いたそうです。なんとか、記憶を取り戻すことに成功した、アレックス・ニューワルドさんは自らの経験を本にまとめ出版したり、メディアでも積極的に体験談について語るようにしているそうです。
事件から約３０年たつ今でも、アレックス・ニューワルドさんは自らの体験を語り続けている目的は、人生を大きく変えた奇妙な経験を消化するためだそうです。自分になぜ文明を見せたのか？宇宙人の目的は何だったのか？。今でもその理由を、記憶を頼りに探っているのでした
