World War I, which began in Europe and pulled much of the world into its fire, remains one of the essential subjects of modern history. Most people know the immediate trigger: the assassination of the Austrian heir in Sarajevo.
But was that the only cause? This article looks at Basil Zaharoff, a man remembered by ominous nicknames such as the “Merchant of Death” and, in some accounts, “the man who caused World War I.”
Trader, tour guide, or something darker?
Basil Zaharoff was born in 1849 in what was then the Ottoman Empire, to a Greek merchant family. As a young man, he worked in Istanbul for an uncle who ran a trading business.
Other accounts say he also worked as a tour guide. Still others claim he acted as a tout for prostitution. Whatever the truth, he seems to have taken on many kinds of work.
That life did not last. Zaharoff allegedly embezzled money from the trading business and fled to London, the capital of Britain. He was eventually arrested, but in court he argued that the money was part of the profit he had been rightfully owed.
The early face of the “Merchant of Death”
After the embezzlement case was settled, the 24-year-old Zaharoff moved to Athens. There, a political journalist introduced him to a position as head of the Athens branch of Nordenfelt, an arms company.
The journalist is said to have recommended Zaharoff because of his skillful way with words. At the time, Greece was in a mood of military expansion, influenced by the aftermath of war between Russia and the Ottoman Empire.
Many arms companies were trying to enter the Greek market, and Nordenfelt was not yet a massive player. Zaharoff needed a way to stand out. His idea was to sell submarines, a technology that was still unusual at the time.
Small submersible craft had existed before, but larger submarines had only developed significantly in the 1860s and had not yet spread widely around the world. Nordenfelt, however, had strong submarine technology and had even developed its own models.
The plan to sell submarines to the Greek government was a major success.
At the same time, Zaharoff was reportedly selling weapons in secret to Greece’s enemy, the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Navy did purchase Nordenfelt submarines, and it became the first in the world to successfully fire a torpedo from underwater.
The exact timing of the Ottoman submarine sales differs depending on the account. Even so, Zaharoff’s habit of selling to both sides—friend and enemy alike—is often described as one of the most infamous episodes in his career.
The political journalist who introduced him to Nordenfelt was Stephanos Skouloudis, who later became the 34th prime minister of Greece.
A world swirling with arms companies
After his success at Nordenfelt, Zaharoff turned his attention to Hiram Maxim.
Maxim was the inventor of the Maxim gun, the world’s first fully automatic machine gun, and he had founded his own arms company, Maxim. According to the story, Zaharoff plotted to sabotage Maxim’s sales so that the company would be forced to merge with Nordenfelt, creating enormous profits.
There were three demonstrations of the Maxim gun. All of them reportedly failed because of Zaharoff’s schemes.
The machine gun had been highly anticipated, but after these failures, it stopped selling. Just as Zaharoff had intended, Maxim was pushed toward a merger with Nordenfelt.
The new Maxim–Nordenfelt company aggressively sold machine guns, with Zaharoff as one of its key figures. After the merger, machine guns sold rapidly around the world, and Zaharoff made a fortune.
In 1897, Maxim–Nordenfelt was acquired by Vickers, a British arms company. Zaharoff then increased his power in the weapons trade as both an agent and a major shareholder.
Was Zaharoff one cause of World War I?
After buying the Zaharoff-influenced Maxim–Nordenfelt company, Vickers became one of Europe’s great arms firms, standing alongside giants such as Krupp and Schneider.
These companies began selling vast quantities of weapons across the world, regardless of which side the buyers were on. Zaharoff, who had already sold Maxim guns internationally, now entered a new stage as an agent of Vickers. He sold arms in Europe, Africa, and South America.
In this way, the conditions for World War I were gradually prepared.
The Balkans were especially affected. The Balkan Peninsula was home to many ethnic groups and, before World War I, was so unstable that it was called the “powder keg of Europe.” As large amounts of weapons flowed into the region, the danger grew even more severe.
Finally, in 1914, the Sarajevo assassination set off the nightmare of World War I.
The outbreak of the war had many causes. Still, one of the factors often discussed is the behind-the-scenes activity of Basil Zaharoff.
There are also stories claiming that Zaharoff used his own intelligence network to influence countries around the world and prolong the war. If that is true, perhaps he should be called not “the man who caused World War I,” but “the man who prolonged World War I.”
As a side note, Zaharoff is also said to have reached into Japan’s military industry. Some have speculated that he may have been behind the Siemens scandal, a bribery case connected to the battlecruiser Kongō, which Japan ordered from Vickers.
His shadow over British politics
Through his intelligence network, Zaharoff developed close relationships with powerful figures, including British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II, and Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos.
The leader most troubled by his connection to Zaharoff was Lloyd George.
After World War I ended, war broke out between Turkey and Greece. Turkish forces defeated the Greek army and appeared ready to attack the Chanak area, a neutral zone protected by British troops.
In response, Lloyd George threatened Turkey militarily.
The threat succeeded, but the British public criticized him for seeming willing to start another war while the country was already exhausted. He was eventually forced from office.
Some accounts claim that Basil Zaharoff was the hidden force behind the events leading to Lloyd George’s fall. Zaharoff had a relationship close enough to be called one of Lloyd George’s inner-circle connections. Perhaps because Greece was a land with deep personal meaning for him, Zaharoff encouraged Lloyd George to support Greece.
As a result, Lloyd George lost power. But Zaharoff, who had stood behind him, was also questioned in the British Parliament and ultimately retired from the arms business.
He spent his final years in Monaco.
Was there really a Rothschild connection?
Stories about Basil Zaharoff often involve the Rothschild family, a familiar name in conspiracy lore. But was there truly a connection?
Some theories claim that the Rothschilds and Zaharoff manipulated Lloyd George together. Others say the Rothschilds were involved when Maxim and Nordenfelt merged.
Fans of urban legends may be drawn to the first version, but the English-language Wikipedia entry only mentions the latter type of connection.
Either way, at minimum, some accounts place Zaharoff and the Rothschilds in the same historical orbit.
Basil Zaharoff, the man of mystery
Basil Zaharoff remains a difficult figure to pin down. Even today, parts of his life are unclear.
Just before his death, he reportedly burned personal materials such as diaries. On top of that, his name does not appear on the list of Vickers directors, despite his influence within the company.
Because of these many mysteries, he has been called not only the “Merchant of Death,” but also the “Man of Mystery.”
Basil Zaharoff is an unavoidable figure when discussing the arms industry around World War I. But the full truth of who he really was may still be far from clear.
