English Version
Tōjinbō, in Antō, Mikuni-cho, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, is known not only for its dramatic sea cliffs but also as a place where people say ghostly photographs can be taken.
Visitors who lean over the edge to look down sometimes lose their footing, making the cliffs genuinely dangerous as well as eerie. If you visit, stay behind barriers, watch your step, and avoid going near the edge, especially at night or in bad weather.
The area has also been associated with suicides. To help people who come here in despair reconsider, a public telephone has been installed. Beside it are messages urging people not to take their own lives, along with 10-yen coins so they can make a call.
Perhaps, as the rumors suggest, the spirits of those who died here while still carrying regrets are said to appear after dark, luring new victims toward the cliffs. Or perhaps the fear comes from the place itself: the height, the waves below, and the knowledge of what has happened here before.
