Near Ura-Takao in Hachioji, Tokyo, there is a place associated with repeated ghost stories involving children.
People say that small handprints appear on cars passing nearby. Others claim to have seen a child run across the road in front of a vehicle, only for the child to vanish moments later.
The area is lined with countless Jizo statues dedicated to mizuko kuyo—memorial rites for children who died before birth or at a very young age. Because of this, the site has become linked in rumor to lingering spiritual activity that never quite stops.
For travelers interested in haunted places, this is a real area rather than a theme-park attraction. If you visit, be respectful of memorial statues and local residents, do not trespass, and avoid stopping or walking in unsafe places along the road.
